Life
Print Preview of Section Milton was born in London on December 9, 1608, and educated at Saint Paul's School and Christ's College, University of Cambridge. He intended to become a clergyman in the Church of England , but growing dissatisfaction with the state of the Anglican clergy together with his own developing poetic interests led him to abandon this purpose. From 1632 to 1638 he lived in his father's country home in Horton, Buckinghamshire, preparing himself for his poetic career by entering upon an ambitious program of reading the Latin and Greek classics and ecclesiastical and political history. From 1638 to 1639 he toured France and Italy, where he met the leading literary figures of the day. On his return to England, he settled in London and began writing a series of social, religious, and political tracts.

    JOHN MILTON
"The mind is its own place, and in itself can make a heaven a hell, a hell a heaven." Birthplace

    Bread St, Cheapside, London, England

St Paul's School; Christ's College, Cambridge (where he was known as "the Lady of Christ's", for a "certain niceness of nature").

Who kills a man kills a reasonable creature; but he who destroys a good book kills reason itself" - Milton's real work was always learning; even at the age of 12, "I rarely retired to bed from my studies until midnight." After university, he carried on an intensive programme of study for five years. At one point he set up a school, and during the interregnum was made Secretary for the Foreign Tongues, a post dealing with diplomatic correspondence. A kind of propagandist laureate, his duties included answering Charles I's pamphlet depicting himself as a martyr, supposedly written on the eve of his execution.

    John Milton
When I Consider How My Light Is Spent
Methought I Saw My Late Espoused Saint
When I Consider How My Light Is Spent
When I consider how my light is spent Ere half my days, in this dark world and wide, And that one talent* which is death to hide Lodged with me useless, though my soul more bent To serve therewith my Maker, and present 5 My true account, lest he returning chide; "Doth God exact day-labor, light denied?" I fondly* ask; but Patience to prevent That murmur, soon replies, "God doth not need Either man's work or his own gifts; who best 10 Bear his mild yoke*, they serve him best. His state Is kingly. Thousands at his bidding speed And post o'er land and ocean without rest: They also serve who only stand and wait."
    Poems 1673(written ca.1652)
    3 talent: Cf. Matthew, xxv.14-30
    8 fondly: foolishly
11 mild yoke: Cf. "My yoke is easy, and my burden is light" (Matthew, xi.30)
Methought I Saw My Late Espoused Saint
Methought I saw my late espoused saint* Brought to me like Alcestis* from the grave, Whom Jove's great son to her glad husband gave, Rescued from death by force, though pale and faint. Mine, as whom* washed from spot of child-bed taint 5 Purification in the old Law* did save, And such as yet once more I trust to have Full sight of her in heaven without restraint, Came vested all in white, pure as her mind. Her face was veiled, yet to my fancied sight 10 Love, sweetness, goodness in her person shined So clear as in no face with more delight. But O as to embrace me she inclined, I waked, she fled, and day brought back my night.

    JOHN MILTON (1608-1674)
Paradise Lost . Birmingham: John Baskerville, 1760. For twenty years between the publication of Lycidas in 1637 and the composition of Paradise Lost John Milton wrote little poetry. He was involved in political activity and issued many pamphlets in defense of religious, civil and domestic liberties. John Baskerville (1706-75), who printed this edition of Milton's epic poem, transformed English and continental typography and printing at the end of the eighteenth century. Trained as a stonecutter, Baskerville made a fortune as a manufacturer of japanned ware before he turned to printing. He designed his own typeface, which shows his stonecutting training and interest in calligraphy, and set up a press where he trained workmen in his methods. These included "leading" or white spaces between lines; wide margins; making his own intense black ink; and hot-pressing or "calendaring" paper after printing. Together these methods created an open and elegant page appropriate to the grand scale and high purpose of Milton's poetry. Gift of the University of Delaware Library Associates

Milton, John (1608-1674) Milton may be the greatest poet in the English language. A political activist and fierce controversialist, he is at once the voice of revolutionary idealism and the icon of Christian humanism, as monumentalized in Paradise Lost (1667). Although he has often been accused of misogyny, his attitude toward women was advanced for his day. Similarly, though there is no doubt that he accepted the biblical condemnation of sodomy, there is reason to think that his attitude toward same-sex relations was enlightened for his age. In a psychoanalytic study, John Shawcross analyzed Milton's intense relationship with his boyhood friend Charles Diodati, concluding that "The total view of Diodati seen from the extant evidence certainly points to a homosexual nature; of Milton, to a latent homosexualism which was probably repressed consciously (as well as subconsciously) from becoming overt except with Diodati."
