John Milton
Read his Sonnet 7
Nationality: English
Career: Poet, essayist, playwright, historian, and diplomat Pro populo anglicano defensio secunda Second Defence of the People of England , 1654), brought him into contact with the leading men of letters in Florence, Rome, and Naples, including Giovanni Battista Manso, Marquis of Villa, who had been an intimate of the epic poet Torquato Tasso. Scholars view the Italian tour as seminal in Milton's literary development; a new self-confidence emerged in the letters he wrote during his travels, and it was in Italy that Milton first proposed to write a great epic. With the coming of the English Civil War and the Commonwealth, Milton's life changed completely as his attentions shifted from private to public concerns. Abruptly he left off writing poetry for prose, pouring out pamphlets during the early 1640s in which he opposed what he considered rampant episcopal tyranny. Having, as he related, embarked from a sense of duty upon "a troubled sea of noises and hoarse disputes," he declared his Puritan allegiance in tracts in which he argued the need to purge the Church of England of all vestiges of Roman Catholicism and restore the simplicity of the apostolic church. In 1642 he married his first wife, Mary Powell, who left him shortly after the wedding (but returned to him three years later; paradoxically, though Milton was to marry two more times, he was never divorced). With the execution of Charles I in 1649, Milton entered the political fray with

Speech For The Liberty Of Unlicensed Printing To The Parliament Of England This is true Liberty when free born men Having to advise the public may speak free, Which he who can, and will, deserv’s high praise, Who neither can nor will, may hold his peace; What can be juster in a State than this? Euripid, Hicetid Introductory Note The name of Milton’s speech on the freedom of the press was imitated from that of the “Logos Areopagiticos” of the Athenian orator Isocrates (B.C.436-338), which was also a speech meant to be read, not heard. The oration of Isocrates aimed at re-establishing the old democracy of Athens by restoring the Court of the Areopagus, whence the work derived its title. During the ascendency of Laud in the Church of England, his instrument, the Court of the Star-Chamber, had reenacted, more oppressively than ever, some of the restrictions imposed during the reign of Elizabeth on the printing of books. These restrictions disappeared with the abolition of the Star-Chamber in 1641, but very soon the Presbyterian majority in the Long Parliament began to pass orders framed with a view to enable them to suppress publications voicing the political and religious views of their opponents. Finally the Order of June, 1643, reproduced here, roused Milton to protest, and he issued his famous plea for unlicensed printing in the following year.

March 15, 1996 The particular species of liberty for which Milton argues in Areopagitica , according to Paul Dowling's careful dissection of the pamphlet, is not the liberty of unlicensed printing, or the liberty to engage in unfettered civil or religious discourse, but the liberty of philosophic speech in the tradition of the "heathen" philosophersSocrates, Plato, and Isocrates, in particular. Dowling agrees with earlier commentators that Areopagitica is a thoroughly ironic piece of prose, the irony made necessary for Milton's own protection against possible retribution from the Long Parliament, should its members perceive his true purpose. To learn that "philosophic freedom" is what made necessary the rhetorical complexitiesthe disguised allusions, the deliberate errors, the omissions, the obliquitiesthat Dowling explicates in Milton's tract was for me a bit of an anti-climax. But I anticipate. Dowling has two purposes in this book. He first argues for two levels of meaning for

John Milton’s father, John Milton Sr. ( ), moved to London around 1583 having just been disinherited for concealing his Protestantism (and an English Bible ) by his devout Catholic father, Richard Milton, who was a wealthy landowner in Oxfordshire . In 1600, John Milton Sr. was admitted to the Company of Scriveners (notaries), and probably married Sara Jeffrey ( ), the poet’s mother, around the same time. John Milton Sr’s relative prosperity, later described by his grandson, Edward Phillips, as "a competent Estate, whereby he was enabled to make a handsom Provision for the Education and Maintenance of his Children," financed the young poet’s various private tutors (though only Thomas Young, a Scots Presbyterian is known), a place at
