to anthea from prison
by Richard Lovelace (1618-1657) When Love with unconfined wings
Hovers within my gates,
And my divine Althea brings
To whisper at the grates;
When I lie tangled in her hair
And fetter'd to her eye,
The birds that wanton in the air
Know no such liberty. When flowing cups run swiftly round
With no allaying Thames,
Our careless heads with roses crown'd,
Our hearts with loyal flames; When thirsty grief in wine we steep, When healths and draughts go free, Fishes that tipple in the deep Know no such liberty. When, like committed linnets, I With shriller voice shall sing The sweetness, mercy, majesty And glories of my King; When I shall voice aloud, how good He is, how great should be, Enlarged winds that curl the flood Know no such liberty. Stone walls do not a prison make

The Toad and Spyder: A Duell Upon a day, when the Dog-star Unto the world proclaim'd a war,
And poyson bark'd from black throat,
And from his jaws infection shot,
Under a deadly hen-bane shade
With slime infernal mists are made,
Met the two dreaded enemies,
Having their weapons in their eyes.
First from his den rolls forth that load
Of spite and hate, the speckl'd toad,
And from his chaps a foam doth spawn,
Such as the loathed three heads yawn; Defies his foe with a fell spit, To wade through death to meet with it; Then in his self the lymbeck turns, And his elixir'd poyson urns. Arachne, once the fear oth' maid Coelestial, thus unto her pray'd:

Links to L ovelace Links to Works Major Works Biography Lovelace, Richard (1618-1657?), English writer, one of the Cavalier poets. He was born in Woolwich and educated at the University of Oxford. In 1642 he was imprisoned for presenting to Parliament a petition favoring the restoration of the Anglican bishops who had been excluded from the Long Parliament. He was an ardent Royalist and served with the French army during the Civil War. On his return to England in 1648 he was again imprisoned but was freed in 1649. He spent his large inherited fortune for the Royalist cause and died in poverty and obscurity. Lovelace's verse is uneven in quality. Some poems are strenuously elaborate; the best are characterized by great elegance and grace. He is best known for his lyrics "To Althea, from Prison" and "To Lucasta, Going to the Wars," both written while he was in prison.
