. He was attractive, handsome, and witty, the very model of a courtier. His comedy, The Scholar , was acted at Oxford in 1636. King Charles and Queen Henrietta Maria admired his demeanor so much when they visited Oxford in the same year that they had him created M.A. A key figure at court and close to the king, Lovelace took part in the King's military expeditions to Scotland in 1639-40. After the failure of the campaign he withdrew to his estates in Kent where he remained until 1642. Presumably, Lovelace made Sir John Suckling 's acquaintance at this time.

Released from prison in April 1649, Lovelace published Lucasta . The Lucasta of the poems was Lucy Sacherevell, whom Lovelace liked to call Lux casta . Upon hearing that Lovelace had died of the wounds he received at Dunkirk, she married another.

Cupid Far Gone by Robert Lovelace
I.
What, so beyond all madnesse is the elf,
Now he hath got out of himself!
His fatal enemy the Bee,
Nor his deceiv'd artillerie,
His shackles, nor the roses bough
Ne'r half so netled him, as he is now.
II. See! at's own mother he is offering; His finger now fits any ring; Old Cybele he would enjoy, And now the girl, and now the boy. He proffers Jove a back caresse, And all his love in the antipodes. III. Jealous of his chast Psyche, raging he Quarrels with student Mercurie, And with a proud submissive breath Offers to change his darts with Death. He strikes at the bright eye of day, And Juno tumbles in her milky way.

    The Snail
Wise emblem of our politic world, Sage snail, within thine own self curl'd; Instruct me softly to make haste, Whilst these my feet go slowly fast.
Compendious snail! thou seem'st to me, Large Euclid's strict epitome; And in each diagram dost fling Thee from the point unto the ring; A figure now triangular, An oval now, and now a square; And then a serpentine dost crawl, Now a straight line, now crook'd, now all.
Preventing rival of the day, Th'art up and openest thy ray, And ere the morn cradles the moon Th'art broke into a beauteous noon. Then when the sun sups in the deep, Thy silver horns ere Cynthia's peep; And thou from thine own liquid bed New Phoebus heav'st thy pleasant head.
Who shall a name for thee create, Deep riddle of mysterious state? Bold Nature that gives common birth To all products of seas and earth, Of thee, as earthquakes, is afraid, Nor will thy dire deliv'ry aid.
Thou thine own daughter then, and sire, That son and mother art entire
