THE EXPLORERS So who discovered America? Was it Columbus, Lodge, or the Vikings? Maybe it was the Indians, now there’s a novel idea. I doubt if we will ever know for sure, so maybe we should try an easier question: who settled the first Anglo Colony in America, for which a written record exists, and where was it located? Was it Plymouth Rock? Or Jamestown? What about Roanoke? From whence have we come? Modern archaeological techniques show that the Vikings had settlements here by the eleventh century. The first explorer that recorded his voyage to North America was Giovanni Caboto, known by the name of John Cabot. Cabot set aground in 1497, claiming North America for the English sovereign King Henry VII. Columbus was still sailing around the Caribbean looking for India, China or Japan – seems he wasn’t too picky. After floundering about and failing to find China, India or Japan

Holy Trinity Church in Stratford on Avon where Shakespeare was baptized.
By law, the minister baptizing William should have worn a surplice and made the sign of the cross - both ceremonies to which puritans deeply objected. From the accession of Elizabeth I, the Church of England was Protestant in doctrine, but retained many Catholic ceremonies. Its ecclesiastical hierarchy was basically the same as that of the Roman Catholic Church (minus Pope and Cardinals). "Holy Scripture containeth all things necessary to salvation: so that whatsoever is not read therein, nor may be proved thereby, is not to be required of any man, that it should be believed as an article of the faith, or be thought requisite or necessary to salvation." (Article VI of the 39 Articles) "We are accounted righteous before God, only for the merit of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ by faith, and not for our own works or deservings: Wherefore, that we are justified by faith only is a most wholesome doctrine…"
(Article XI of the 39 Articles)
The Church of England preached the doctrine of justification by faith (crucial to Luther's reformation) and insisted that doctrine should be based only on Scripture (not on tradition or authority). Unlike the Catholic Church, the Church of England acknowledged only two sacraments (the Eucharist and Baptism). The Eucharist was given in both kinds (bread and wine) and the doctrine of

Seminar and Roanoke Colonies Research Office

(Note: Thomas Hariot spelled his name both Hariot and Harriot . Modern American usage is to spell his name with one r, as it appeared on the cover of Hariot’s Briefe and True Report . For this reason, the Roanoke Colonies Research Newsletter follows this practice, though two r ’s are used whenever appropriate, such as in references to the Durham Thomas Harriot Seminar, its newsletter The Harrioteer, in bibliographic entries, and so forth.) On December 13, 1993, the Durham (England) Thomas Harriot Seminar heard a report from Dr. Helen Wallis about last May’s Roanoke Decoded symposium and the founding of the Roanoke Colonies Research Office. Dr. Wallis is the retired librarian of the British Library Maps Room and a member of the Roanoke Colonies Research Office advisory committee. As a result of her report, the members of the Harriot Seminar suggested that “close links” be established between the Roanoke Colonies Research Office and the seminar. The Harriot Seminar is an annual meeting of scholars in Great Britain to present research related to Thomas Hariot (1560-1621), a member of the 1585-1586 colonization mission to Roanoke Island and author of

This database uses a search engine like the one used in the ProQuest databases. You can enter a search string connecting terms with AND, OR, or NOT, or you can use the advanced search feature to refine a simple search by adding terms limited to particular fields. For example, "rebellion AND SUB(Ireland)" returns 607 citations. You are offered the opportunity to view all 607, which you are advised "may be a very intensive operation, and may be slow in loading," or, as prompted, you can revise your search by adding new terms or limiting by date. The results list has two columns. On the left are a series of icons indicating the amount of information available, while in the right column you will see the short title for the work.

Thomas Hariot - a forgotten genius
Thomas Hariot (1560-1621) was geographer, cartographer, biologist, anthropologist, linguist, astronomer and great mathematician. Among his achievements were: the first to square the area of a spherical triangle, made extensive use of bringing the whole equation in math over to one side and making it equal to nothing, he mapped the coastline of the Hatteras peninsula, the Albemarle and Pamlico Sounds and the shoals and island to the north and south, recorded new species of animals and plants that abounded in the New World, and gave them names, wrote down the customs, history, and politics of the local Indians and even made the first transcript of a North American Indian language, Carolina Algonquian, in the process developing a system of English orthography for the purpose, while taking note of the interesting linguistic implications of its dialectal variations, developed an improved version of the cross staff, the navigational forerunner of the sextant. The renown poet Muriel Rukeyser thinks that Keats noticed Hariot's name in Chapman's dedication, and that Keats has Hariot in mind in his magnificent "On First Looking into Chapman's Homer": Hariot is both the "watcher of the skies" and the explorer who looks on the new ocean "with a wild surmise."
