The Galileo Project
Science Thomas Harriot Thomas Harriot (1560-1621) Nothing is known of Harriot's life up to the time when, at age seventeen, he matriculated at the University of Oxford. The record states that he was from the county of Oxford and that his father was a commoner. Harriot studied at St. Mary's Hall, took his degree in 1580, and went to London. Here he was employed by Sir Walter Ralegh and in 1585 went with the expedition to Virginia organized by Ralegh as cartographer and one versed in the theory of navigationin our terms, as staff scientist. Harriot returned in 1586 and wrote an account of Virginia and its natives, A Briefe and True Report of the New Found Land of Virginia , published in 1588. In the meantime, Harriot had joined Ralegh in Ireland, which the English were colonizing at that time. Ralegh granted Harriot a former abbey, where Harriot lived for a few years. Back in London, Harriot came into contact with William Percy, 9th Earl of Northumberland, and in 1598 he left Ralegh and entered the service of Northumberland, who gave him a pension and living quarters (and later a separate house) at Syon House, just west of London. In 1605 Harriot was briefly imprisoned along with Northumberland as a result of the Gunpowder Plot. Harriot was quickly released but the earl remained in the Tower of London until 1622. Harriot lived at Syon for the rest of his life. In 1613 he developed an cancerous ulcer (on his nostril), which was the eventual cause of his death.

Thomas Harriot was a mathematician and astronomer who founded the English school of algebra. He is described in [10] by Fauvel and Goulding as:- ... the greatest mathematician that Oxford has produced ... yet his name has only recently become widely known, and even now his achievements are not fully appreciated by most mathematicians. We know very little of Harriot's youth. In fact all that is known is that on Friday 20 December 1577 he matriculated at the University of Oxford with an entry in the official records giving his age as seventeen, his father as a plebeian, and his birthplace Oxfordshire. It is from this record that his date of birth is deduced to be 1560 and we know that his father was a "commoner" but the very fact that Harriot was entering Oxford means that it is unlikely that he came from the poorest classes. Despite extensive searches of the Oxfordshire records, no further information concerning his birth or parentage has been found (although a number of possible relatives have been identified). As an undergraduate at Oxford, Harriot was a student at St Mary's Hall. He became friends with Richard Hakluyt and Thomas Allen, both lecturers at the university, but not at St Mary's Hall. Harriot graduated in 1580 and went to London. It is not clear exactly what he did in his first few years there but, probably from late 1583, he entered Sir Walter Raleigh's service. Hakluyt, dedicating a preface to Raleigh in February 1587, wrote (see for example [4]):-

Female and Male Voices in Early Modern England An Anthology of Renaissance Writing
Edited by Betty S. Travitsky and Anne Lake Prescott "Travitsky (archivist, Staten Island College, CUNY) and Prescott (literature, Barnard College) have put together a fascinating anthology....[T]he volume gives an excellent if nontraditional view of the early modern period and will be valuable in any academic library." Choice "Fills an important need for a teaching text that illustrates both the commonalities and disjunctions between women and men’s approaches to similar experiences in the early modern period. The selections are of real interest on their own merits and usefully paired. While the book is arranged to offer comparisons on specific topics, it also invites teachers to think of new ways to organize the material, and to involve students in the exciting process of redefining English cultural history." "An important contribution to the field, for it brings together in new ways a host of fascinating texts by currently famous and also lesser-known writers."
