UK ZOOS:
Fit for life?
In the UK, an estimated 1/4 million animals – large and small – are held in more than 400 zoological collections*.
Since 1984, these zoos have been regulated by the UK Zoo Licensing Act (1981) which aims to promote minimum standards of welfare, meaningful education, effective conservation, valuable research and essential public safety.
In the last 20 years, UK zoos have had to contend with growing levels of public scepticism and concern as more and more people question their justification.
Now they face a major new challenge. The recent introduction of the European Zoos Directive (1999/22/EC) by the European Union places an even greater emphasis on conservation, education, research and welfare.
Can UK zoos meet this new challenge and reassure an increasingly concerned public?
This Official Zoo Health Check 2000 is the first of a series of independent and comprehensive zoo investigations by a team of scientists from the renowned international wildlife charity, the Born Free Foundation. Are UK zoos fit for life (click image for video clip) Recording key data over a 12 month period in more than 100 UK zoological collections, the Official Zoo Health Check 2000 seeks to assess for the first time the true ‘health’ of the UK zoo industry. Based on extensive research undertaken throughout 2000, this is the first of a series of reports to be published on the ‘health’ of UK zoos.

Animal activists call on zoos to improve elephant treatment
SIGNONSANDIEGO NEWS SERVICES 2:51 p.m. January 19, 2005 SAN DIEGO – Several animal activists went to the San Diego Zoo Wednesday to call on the zoo industry to acknowledge that elephant enclosures are "deadly" and to take steps to move the animals to more natural sanctuaries. The plea follows the euthanization of a 55-year-old African elephant named Peaches on Monday at Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo. According to San Diego Zoo public affairs officials, four activists demonstrated outside of the park's main entrance Wednesday afternoon. Peaches and two other elephants, Tatima and Wankie, were transferred to the Lincoln Park Zoo from the San Diego Wild Animal Park in April 2003, to make room for new wild-caught pachyderms brought to the park. Tatima died last October at age 35 from what zoo officials said were complications due to tuberculosis. Wankie remains at the Chicago zoo.

Discuss why having national parks is important to South Africa and to recognize the international obligations that exist (IUCN). To evaluate techniques for prioritizing areas for conservation. Discuss why and how you can conserve areas outside national parks. Understand the biosphere reserve concept and its implications. Discuss the need for conflict resolution and how people can be included within environmental management practices. Students should reflect on the following statement:- National Parks "have not drawn us into a more thoughtful relationship with our habitat, They have not taught us that land is to be used frugally and with good sense. They have encouraged us to believe that conservation is merely a system of trading environmental write-offs against large protected areas. They more than failed, in fact they have become a symptom of the problem " (Van Tighem 1986)

CAPS ARCHIVE
Day of Action Against Zoos 1999 CAPS used the busiest day of the zoo calendar - August Bank Holiday - to launch our biggest ever awareness campaign to highlight the plight of zoo animals. A new package of campaign materials ( video , leaflet and fact sheet Representing the Zoo Industry
All of the photographs and video used in the campaign have been collected by CAPS during the past twelve months making it extremely representative of the UK zoo industry at present. All MPs have been sent a copy of the video and we are receiving positive responses, including a request from an MP to mail the video to every member of the Scottish Parliament - this we are proceeding with. The video and accompanying information is also being offered free to all schools. Remember: Zoos will close once people stop paying to see animals incarcerated. Zoo Protests
On August Bank Holiday Monday, thousands of CAPS leaflets were distributed outside zoos throughout the country. London Animal Action organised a particularly good turnout of up to 100 people outside London Zoo. In addition to the new CAPS leaflet, they distributed their own specifically on London Zoo.

Do animals have rights?
By Rajeev Dhavan Do animals have rights? How are their rights to be enforced? Like English law, Indian law does not give animals a legal personality. They are the objects rather than the subject of human rights. Trusts can be created in their benefit. They have no rights. But they can be beneficial objects under a beneficent regime designed to protect them. Such regimes are usually criminal in nature and enforced through penalties. The provisions dealing with zoos are pitiable. Why do we have zoos? Is it to protect endangered species? Or, to regulate the creation of any endless number of zoos? Are zoos like non- performing circuses - for the amusement of children and others on social outings? And, is it just enough to provide a few veterinary doctors? Despite being the home of Buddhism, Jainism, Hinduism and many other humane faiths that a place a premium on the protection of all living beings, Indian society is both cruel and careless towards animals. The legal regime is mostly for the benefit of humans; and only minimally to protect animals. The animals more useful to humans are given protection in a sea of indifference which, as pointed out by the Delhi High Court Stray Dogs case of 1992, countenances cruelty at all places and all levels. India has a bio and animal diversity comparable to the Amazon or any country in any continent. Unfortunately, our law and legislation proceeds on the basis that only those animals useful or amusing to humans are to be protected with diminishing care.
