A zoo. A zoological garden, or zoo for short, is a place where wild animals are encaged in an artificial environment and exhibited to the public. The first zoos were private menageries, usually belonging to kings. King Charles I started a zoo with a large python snake as the main attraction. The first public zoological garden was created in Vienna in , when the Habsburg Emperors decided to grant public access to the former privately-owned Sch¶nbrunn Palace menagerie, now called Tiergarten Sch¶nbrunn . After the French Revolution , the Paris zoo was opened to the public. Over time, the mission of zoos has shifted from simply displaying exotic animals, to scientific study, and, later, to breeding them, and in particular maintaining populations of animals that are endangered or even extinct in the wild. The first scientific zoological garden in the modern world was founded in

Posted by Brent I took my brother to Ueno Park for the afternoon last week while he was visiting Japan. It was a bit too chilly to just hang around so we decided to check out the zoo (first time for me too). I had the same feeling regarding the animals there. The only animals that showed any excitement were the polar bears but that may have been because we saw them at closing time (guess what music was playing?) and they were probably excited about dinner. We must not forget that the public perception of wild animals is still being shaped by zoos. The idyllic settings of modern exhibits, however desirable in the modern zoo, may be presenting as distorted a picture of wild animals as did the Victorian menagerie. The "invisible barriers" between exhibit animals and public viewing areas have allowed zoo visitors to get "up close and personal" with even the most exotic and potentially dangerous of species. It is possible that the modern zoo exhibit may be giving a view to the public that these now-familiar exotic animals are less dangerous to people than they actually are. The changing public perception of wild animals may be part of the reason why so many people now desire exotic animals as pets. While owning a lion cub may spur some people into becoming zoo directors, as chronicled so well by the late Guy Smith of the Knoxville Zoo in A House for Joshua , the more common experience of exotic pet ownership is far less gratifying. And although the position of the AAZPA is that wild animals should not be kept as pets, it is possible that zoos themselves may inadvertently be contributing to this problem by the way they display animals.

Its clear and unpretentious language and Hancocks' evident passion for and knowledge of his subject made it one of the best books I have read in a long while."Tim Murray, The Age (Melbourne) "This brilliantly researched and persuasive book traces the sociology of animal captivity back to Paleolithic times." Publishers Weekly "The capture and display of wild animals, an ancient and universal phenomenon, embodies a dichotomy, Hancocks explains in this engrossing history of zoos and their role in society. His critique of the miseries associated with their museumlike warehousing of living creatures is electrifying, the perfect lead-in to his discussion of the slow realization that naturalistic habitats are essential to zoo animals' health and happiness." Booklist "[Hancocks] writes authoritatively and compassionately, and fortunately offers some ideas on how to improve zoos for both the animals and the people who visit them."

About EFBC/FCC
dedicated to the protection and preservation of the world's endangered felines
Home to over 70 of the world's most endangered felines, EFBC/FCC is a breeding zoo and research facility. Funds received are used for the care and support of the compound's animals and long-term goals, which include a natural history museum and public education programs. The older cages are slowly being replaced by large natural habitat enclosures that rival those found at the best zoos-check out our current construction page to see what's in progress. Enrichment programs keep the cats active. EFBC's Feline Conservation Center is part of a worldwide network of zoos and facilities dedicated to the preservation of endangered cats, acting as a modern-day ark in the face of human overpopulation and mass extinction of animal species. We are involved in cooperative breeding projects with other zoos and facilities throughout the world. The majority of FCC's cats are not abandoned pets as you would find at a rescue facility , they are purebred animals that are registered within ISIS and the Species Survival Plan (SSP) or Population Management Plan (PMP) for each cat species. Cubs born here are often sent to other zoos for their breeding programs. We do NOT sell cats to the public.

Iwokrama Develops Model Partnership for Conservation with Jacksonville Zoo
15 April 2004 Guyana has a rich history of wildlife research, conservation and management. In their heyday, the Guyana Zoo , Guyana Museum, and the Royal Agricultural and Commercial Society (now the Guyana Society Collection) were considered centres of excellence for wildlife research and management. From the 1800's Guyanese animals were collected for zoos in Europe and North America, and international conservationists and scientists, including Gerald Durrell and David Attenborough, brought attention to Guyana's wildlife through many books and films. However, during the 1970's Guyana disappeared off the radar screen of wildlife research, conservation and management. International interest in Guyana's wildlife has undergone a revival in the last ten years and organisations like Iwokrama and the Jacksonville Zoological Gardens are at the forefront of that revival. Guyana's forests are now recognized by Conservation International and the World Resources Institute as "frontier forests" and Guyana's wetlands are recognized as a WWF Global 200 Ecosystem . AZA GUIDELINES FOR ANIMAL CONTACT WITH THE GENERAL PUBLIC
Drafted by the AZA Animal Health Committee
R. Eric Miller, DVM, Dipl. ACZM
Chair
Nearly every contact with other living organisms, whether it be with humans or other animals, carries some risk of disease transmission. Diseases that are spread from animals to humans are called zoonoses (adj. = zoonotic diseases). Responsible zoos should and do make reasonable attempts to limit the risk of the spread of disease from the animals in their care to their employees and to the general public. For the general public, the risk of contracting disease from most zoo animals is minimal to nonexistent due to their distance and isolation from the animals. However, contact areas for the general public can present increased risks that can be controlled with reasonable precautions. For this paper, contact areas refers to those areas in which there is direct physical contact between animals and people. These precautions are most effective when they are part of an overall preventive medicine program for the zoological park. Risks of zoonotic disease can be markedly reduced by avoiding direct animal contact. However, this forgoes many valuable educational experiences and the establishment of a direct relationship between animals and the public. A reasonable alternative is adequate hand washing for those in direct contact with the animals. Hand washing is perhaps the single most effective personal hygiene procedure for reducing the risk of infection.
