Jeff Williamson, zoo president and chief executive officer, said experts from three of America's top exotic animal parks visited Phoenix recently to evaluate operations after questions were raised by members of an Animal Health Committee. Their findings are to be reported next month. Kris Nelson, a veterinarian whose complaints prompted the review, says dozens of exotic animals died or suffered in recent years due to neglect and misjudgments by managers and caretakers. Nelson is backed by a former chief veterinarian and a former animal nutritionist at the zoo, both of whom were replaced recently amid a struggle over animal care and management. The zoo houses an estimated 1,400 animals on a 125-acre compound in Papago Park.

London Zoo has announced plans to let humans get closer to its animals - without cages getting in the way. But is it the zoos which are changing - or the human visitors?
Zoos want the public to come 'face-to-face' with animals London Zoo sold its most prized asset, Jumbo the African bull elephant, to an American circus in 1882 after the owners became perturbed by the animal's cantankerous nature. The animal died in a train crash soon after. The treatment of animals has come a long way since then. Zoos talk more of conservation than of profits. London Zoo has just announced a £5m overhaul of its gorilla enclosure to bring them closer to their natural environment. Other zoos have followed similar paths in recent years. But will the public continue to pay to see animals in captivity? Or is the zoo a relic of a bygone era? Dreamworks' Madagascar: a hint to human attitudes?

Condors: Back to the Wild
During the 1930s, an estimated 150 California condors lived in the wild. By 1987, that number was down to just 27 birds. Researchers believe that suburban sprawl, sport hunting, and pesticides all contributed to the near demise of this species.
A California condor. In 1987, the San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park captured every wild bird still alive and began breeding chicks in an effort to help the species return to a safe level.
As you see in ANIMAL ATTRACTIONS, zoo keepers try creative methods to rear the chicks, such as using condor puppets to feed them so that the young birds never associate humans with food, and thus do not become dependent on us for survival.
The Wild Animal Park is reintroducing this species, once thought doomed, into its natural habitat. Dave Rimlinger, curator of birds at the San Diego Zoo, has been monitoring the condors that now reside in the zoological society's "condor-minium" complex. Here, in an interview with NATURE Online conducted in October, 1997, he describes the condor release program and its goals.
You brought wild birds into a captive situation. How have the California condors done in captivity?

93. History Of Melbourne Zoo
Now called Werribee Open Range Zoo, the zoo features herbivorous animals displayed in The Zoological parks and Gardens Board now manages Melbourne Zoo,
http://www.zoo.org.au/history/
The Zoo, originally located on the river flats in Richmond, was modelled on London Zoo, and is believed to be the eleventh oldest zoo in the world. In 1862 the Royal Park site was given to the zoo by the city of Melbourne. The grounds were laid out on formal lines to create a garden atmosphere. But with the government as the main source of funding, the emphasis shifted from recreation and education, to animal acclimatisation. So in the early years, all that visitors could hope to see were some slightly unusual domestic animals and song birds. These were in the Zoo recovering from their trip to Australia prior to being sent out to a station or for liberation in the bush. Consequently the Society's gardens attracted little popular interest. The development of the Zoological collection began with the appointment of Albert Le Souef in 1870. He acquired monkeys, American Black Bears, lions, tigers and other species. He also developed picnic grounds and prepared garden beds. At first, animals were housed in old circus cages, then wooden houses. A bear pit was created, and aviaries erected. Throughout the 1870s access to the zoo was free of charge. Visitors took great delight in teasing the monkeys, watching the lions being fed and then falling asleep under a tree in one of the picnic areas. In 1881 an entrance fee was introduced to enable the Zoo to buy stock. An elephant and an orangutan were purchased that year. Many exotic animals were added to the collection, including rhinos, hippos, bison, zebra and giraffe. The Zoo maintained a very strong Australian collection, even establishing a special section in 1934 to display platypus, koala and a wide range of native animals.

New Director Could Be Good Fit for Zoo, Experts Say
By D'Vera Cohn Washington Post Staff Writer Saturday, July 30, 2005; Page B04 The selection of a wildlife conservation foundation executive with political credentials to lead the National Zoo was an unusual choice, but the heads of two groups that recently reviewed the management of the animal park said yesterday that John Berry could be the right kind of leader to restore the institution's luster. Berry held a variety of Capitol Hill and federal jobs before becoming executive director of the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation five years ago. He will be the first National Zoo director who is not a scientist, according to a historian who has studied the zoo.
