About the City Zoos
WCS's
WCS's jewel-like zoo in Manhattan has existed only since 1988 - yet its full history stretches back to the last century. The evolution of this city landmark launched the modern trend in urban zoos around the nation: the transformation of cages and menagerie-style zoos into natural habitat exhibits that educate, involve, and connect people to our natural world. Since the 1860's, animals could be found at Fifth Avenue and 64th Street in Central Park. At first, the collection was simply a growing group of donated animals - from 72 "white swans" to a black bear cub. In 1864, the State Legislature authorized the city Parks Commission to establish a zoo, and the more formal Central Park Menagerie was established. In 1934, then- Commissioner of Parks Robert Moses remodeled the Menagerie into the Central Park Zoo. A Works Progress Administration (WPA) project, this tiny "storybook" zoo set a standard for its time - but over the decades, became a woefully inadequate facility for its inhabitants. In April of 1980, WCS signed an agreement with the City of New York to renovate and operate the zoo for the Department of Parks and Recreation. WCS animal and exhibit experts, and architects Kevin Roche, John Dinkeloo and Associates, led the project. Demolition of most of the buildings began in the winter of 1983 and continued in 1984; construction began in the spring of 1985. On August 8, 1988, the new Central Park Zoo opened to record crowds and enthusiastic reviews. Today, this "newest, oldest" zoo attracts nearly 1 million visitors a year.

The death of Anna the Asian elephant at Whipsnade Wild animal Park. The zooclaims Anna s death was due to an infection related to the still birth.
http://www.captiveanimals.org/elephants/whipsnade.htm
Death at Whipsnade Anna, a 20 year old Asian elephant at Whipsnade 'Wild Animal Park' died on 4th July, three days after her calf was stillborn. The zoo claims Anna's death was due to an infection related to the still birth. Following the death CAPS received information from someone claiming to be an employee of London Zoo. This informant described in graphic terms the events surrounding the surgery on a female elephant that died on 4th July. Our informant alleges that she actually died "in agony several days after the event". The informant implied that the details of events leading up to her death were being withheld. CAPS immediately wrote to the President, Director General and Senior Curator of the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), who own the zoo, offering them the opportunity to comment on some of the details that had been described to us. In a letter from the Zoological Director of the Society (Dr Chris West) we are told that our informant was probably "not immediately involved and is not very knowledgeable on veterinary matters". He goes on to say that "Rather than attract hostile criticism the team at ZSL and from other institutions should receive commendation". The ZSL deny any unnecessary surgery on Anna and claim to have brought in vets from other zoos to help. They further assert that Anna did not 'die in agony'.

Finding a Place for the Zoo
The first exhibits consisted of animals transferred from Golden Gate Park. An early inventory list records two zebras, one cape buffalo, five rhesus monkeys, two spider monkeys, and, of course, three elephants: Babe, Virginia and Marjorie, donated by Fleishhacker himself.

Bistany himself saved the day by personally overseeing the shipment, improvising cages and delivering impromptu lectures about the care of each species. By the time Fleishhacker returned from his cruise, the animals were sheltered, tended and healthy.
Bistany passed away in 1935 and was succeeded by Edmund Heller, the former Director of the Milwaukee Zoo. Heller was a noted zoologist with a strong history of field research. After a yearlong African safari, he co-authored with Theodore Roosevelt the reference book Life Histories of African Game Animals.

The zoo is open to the public and is visited by over 25,000 visitors each year. As a part of the training, students participate in giving guided tours to the zoo visitors. Also as a part of the training, students are required to participate in some weekend and holiday work as well as work between semesters. SFCC's Teaching Zoo Program is a five-semester technical program that offers a wide range of practical instruction and clinical experiences leading to the Associate of Science Degree in Zoo Animal Technology.
