The transport of animals between zoos is safe
Zoos tend to treat animals as commodities. Zoos have created a multi-million dollar market in the worldwide trade and transport of wild animals. The trafficking of wild animals between zoos wantonly puts the animals at tremendous risk. The animals are often drugged, misplaced or left to languish in Customs. Many die painful deaths in transit. Animals are not freight and should not be subjected to long, arduous journeys. Rhinos Die From Exposure, Dehydration During Transport
Animals Unable to Make 1,200-Mile Journey in 99-Degree Heat Three years ago, a pair of southern white rhinoceroses from the Pittsburgh Zoo died from apparent neglect while being improperly transported from Shanhai to Chengdu, only five days after they were flown into China. The transfer was brokered by the San Diego Wild Animal Park, which paid the Pittsburgh Zoo $3,000 for the animals and covered the $68,000 transportation bill. The animals were intended as a gift for the Chengdu Zoo, and were to be included in a breeding program.

A great way to learn something, help with preservation efforts and have fun Cons some exhibits need updating The Bottom Line Come visit the zoo. Full Review I've traveled many places in the world and had the chance to see zoos both in the United States and abroad. I admit to having a fondness for zoos. Some zoos, however, leave me sad. In Merida, Venezuela I nearly cried when I saw the conditions in which animals were kept. The zoo in Berlin, Germany was impressive. The most amazing zoo, in my opinion, is the one back home - The San Diego Zoo. The zoo is located in San Diego's largest park - Balboa Park. It takes up about 100 acres. Founded by Dr. Harry Wegeforth in 1916 with very few animals, it was originally part of the Panama-California Exposition. Today, the zoo is home to over 4,000 animals from over 800 species. Even more impressive is its plant collection which represents over 6,500 species. The zoo still has some old fashioned display areas that are pretty sad to look at. In particular, those areas housing mountain sheep and goats are less than spectacular. Also, I'd like to see some changes in hoof and horn Mesa. Most of the zoo, however, has animals in good sized habitats which are meant to encourage their health - both physical and emotional. Even in those enclosures where the humans are not impressed, effort is made to make the animals comfortable and happy.

What is involved with zoo employment? With more than 110 million people visiting zoological institutions annually, zoo staff has the opportunity to educate the public about the critical need for the conservation of wildlife and wild lands. This responsibility assures an interesting and rewarding career, but zoo positions require more than commitment to conservation - it requires hard work. Zoo employment is not always glamorous. Much of the work requires physical strength, as well as the ability to make detailed observations and keep information up-to-date. It takes a special kind of dedication to provide care to captive animals that require attention 24 hours a day, seven days a week, in snow, rain, or sunshine. The reward for such efforts, however, is great. Zoo employees share in the knowledge that they are providing the best care for the creatures in the facility, as well as developing a forum for others to learn how they too can participate in the conservation of our planet's natural resources.

Abstract

This paper examines the proposed new standards for exhibiting primates at zoos and animal parks in New South Wales. It examines why the standards have been developed and looks at some interesting welfare issues which the standards attempt to address. Some of the intended benefits for the primates, the general community, the zoo-visiting public, primate exhibitors and primate welfarists are presented.
Some of the difficulties encountered in preparing the standards have revealed deficiencies in published information and in the availability of information about a variety of factors that effect the welfare of primates kept for display. Examples are presented to encourage improvement in understanding of these factors.
Introduction
top The fact that non-human primates resemble humans in many ways has contributed greatly to their popularity as exhibit animals in zoos and animal parks. People readily empathise with primates and can become deeply concerned about their welfare. There is a growing appreciation that primates are one of the more highly developed groups of animals, having special psychological and social needs. The more advanced mental characteristics of this group arguably give its members a greater potential to suffer if their needs are not met. Consequently there is considerable public interest in the welfare of exhibited primates.
