Nearly every contact with other living organisms, whether it be with humans or other animals, carries some risk of disease transmission. Diseases that are spread from animals to humans are called zoonoses (adj. = zoonotic diseases). Responsible zoos should and do make reasonable attempts to limit the risk of the spread of disease from the animals in their care to their employees and to the general public. (4,9) For the general public, the risk of contracting disease from most zoo animals is minimal to nonexistent due to their distance and isolation from the animals. However, contact areas for the general public can present increased risks that can be controlled with reasonable precautions. For this paper, contact areas refers to those areas in which there is direct physical contact between animals and people. These precautions are most effective when they are part of an overall preventive medicine program for the zoological park. (5,8) Risks of zoonotic disease can be markedly reduced by avoiding direct animal contact. However, this foregoes many valuable educational experiences and the establishment of a direct relationship between animals and the public. A reasonable alternative is adequate hand washing for those in direct contact with the animals. Hand washing is perhaps the single most effective personal hygiene procedure for reducing the risk of infection.( 4) Given that fact, all areas in which the public has direct contact with animals should have access to hand washing facilities that are in the immediate vicinity of the contact (or an equivalent; e.g., bacteriocidal hand-wipes).

The National Zoo in Washington, D.C. A zoological garden, or zoo for short, is a place where wild animals are encaged in an artificial environment and exhibited to the public. The first zoos were private menageries, usually belonging to kings. King Charles I started a zoo with a large python snake as the main attraction. The first public zoological garden was created in Vienna in , when the Habsburg Emperors decided to grant public access to the former privately-owned Sch¶nbrunn Palace menagerie, now called Tiergarten Sch¶nbrunn . After the French Revolution , the Paris zoo was opened to the public. Over time, the mission of zoos has shifted from simply displaying exotic animals, to scientific study, and, later, to breeding them, and in particular maintaining populations of animals that are endangered or even extinct in the wild. The first scientific zoological garden in the modern world was founded in London in by the Zoological Society of London . It was opened to the public in the same year, as a way of funding its scientific work. Londoners soon shortened "zoological gardens" to "zoo." It was the Zoological Society of London, too, which was to be the first to create an open wild animal park, with the establishment of the Whipsnade Wild Animal Park on the Chiltern Hills in 1926.

San Diego Wild Animal Park
San Diego has a long history of self-promotion as a tourist mecca. The Hotel del Coronado when completed in 1888 was the largest hotel on the West Coast and marked the beginning of an organized effort to attract visitors to the city. Mission Beach was developed before World War I and became San Diego's "Coney Island". The Panama-Pacific Exposition developed Balboa park in 1915 and led to the organization of the San-Diego-California Club in 1919, the city's first tourist promotion organization, and the opening of the San Diego Zoo (1). The growth of automobility led to an outward dispersal of San Diego. Mission Valley became a suburban shopping mall and hotel center for San Diego after World War II and Mission Bay was reshaped into a park playland. Sea World was located on this Bay in 1964 as the first theme park in San Diego and "constructed a mythical narrative about human relations to nature" (2). The Wild Animal Park continued this effort to transform San Diego into a mythical tourist paradise. During the year 1964, the Stanford Research Institute was asked to evaluate the probable financial success of three alternative developments for the San Pasqual site. The three alternative developments were a conservation farm, a game preserve, and a natural environment zoo. Today the San Diego Wild Animal Park is most like a natural environment zoo, which provides facilities for the public's viewing of the animal collection. The natural environment zoo development was chosen over the conservation farm and game preserve when in fact it cost the most money to develop. Obviously, the cost of development was not the primary deciding factor, but the estimated income was.
