42. Mandela's Speech - May 20/97
In that process Zimbabwe played a pivotal role, as a regional leader in the our countries but also on our common heritage of the great zimbabwe culture.

President Nelson Mandela
Public Rally in Masvingo, Zimbabwe
20 May 1997
Back to Migration Documents Minister of Foreign Affairs, Distinguished guests, Citizens of Zimbabwe. We have come to Zimbabwe to strengthen the bonds between our two countries. I am honoured to stand before you today, men and women who have fought for their freedom; allies who shared the trenches of struggle with us; and partners in rebuilding our societies. South Africans are free today because the government and people of Zimbabwe considered their own freedom incomplete while their neighbours were still oppressed. Though thanks are not needed between those as close as we are, we do thank you from the bottom of our hearts, knowing the cost inflicted upon you by the apartheid regime because you supported us. Despite the cost to yourselves, you gave us material and moral support; a home from home for our exiles; and a voice in the councils of the region, the continent and the world. There could be no better place than this for South Africa's first democratically elected President to meet with you, the people of Zimbabwe. Great Zimbabwe reminds us of the ancient civilization of Africa, of the kingdoms and empires that flourished in the subcontinent, building wealth on vibrant trade in the region and with Asia until the disruptions of colonialism caused them to wither.

Introduction
Zimbabwe is a landlocked country in south-central Africa. It lies between the Zambezi River in the North and the Limpopo River to the south. The country has land borders with Mozambique to the north and east, South Africa to the South, Botswana to the southwest and Zambia to the northwest and north.
Most of Zimbabwe is rolling plateau, with over 75% of it lying between 610m (2000 ft) and 1,525m (5,000 ft) above sea level, and almost all of it over 305m (1,000 ft).
The area of high plateau, know as the high Veld, is some 400 miles long by 50 miles wide, and stretches northeast to southwest at 1,220m (4,000 ft) to 1,676m (5,500ft) This culminates in the northeast in the Udizi and Inyanga mountains, reaching the country's highest point at Mt. Inyangani at 2,596m (8,517 ft). The middle veld is a plateau ranging from 610m (2,000 ft) to 1,220 m (4,000 ft) high. Below 610m (2,000ft) are areas making up the Low Veld, wide and sandy plains in the basins of the Zambezi and the Limpopo.

Great Zimbabwe zimbabwe means "stone enclosure") around 1300. Great Zimbabwe was a fortification surrounded by huge, elliptical stone walls made without any mortar. By 1500, Great Zimbabwe dominated the Zambezi Valley both militarily and commercially (the Mwenemutapa empire); because of this, the new ideas about divine kingship spread throughout the valley and changed the social structures of most of the Bantu people living there.

Sadza ne Nyama: A Shona Staple Dish
BACK Introduction
Sadza ne Nyama ("Sadza [and Meat Stew]") or simply Sadza is the staple diet for most of Zimbabwe's indigenous peoples. It is a two part recipe with sadza on one and the accompanying stew or vegetable relish on the other. Sadza is a generic term used to describe thickened porridge made out of any number of pulverized grains . The most common form of sadza is made with white maize (corn) mealie meal. Despite the fact that maize is actually an imported food crop to Zimbabwe (circa 1890), it has become the chief source of starch and carbohydrate and the most popular meal for indigenous peoples of Zimbabwe. Sadza is to Zimbabweans what rice is to the Chinese or pasta to the Italians. Nyama
Nyama is the Shona word for meat. Which kind of meat is qualified by naming the animal or beast from with it comes. For example beef is nyama ye mombe where mombe is the Shona word for cattle. Similarly chicken is nyama ye huku where huku is the Shona word for chicken. Nyama ye

It includes a large representation of extant mammals from Botswana, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Geology and Palaeontology is the oldest department at the Natural History Museum, having been established in 1901. The geological collections and displays are ranked among the best in Africa. It boasts the majestic Victoria Falls, magnificent wildlife preserves and the medieval ruins of Great Zimbabwe, as well as the bustling city of Harare. Country in Turmoil It is advisable that you check government travel advice before you travel to Zimbabwe as the current socio-political situation is very tense. If you must visit, avoid political gatherings and demonstrations of any kind as they have been known to become violent, particularly in Harare's high-density suburbs. Travellers should take suitable precautions including minimising night-time and solo travel and avoiding ostentatious displays of wealth.

Throughout the 1990’s, a wide spectrum of civic organizations began to emerge as an increasingly articulate public voice for the aspirations of citizens. However, these groups had little experience or weak capacity for channeling advocacy efforts to achieve policy change through the legislative process. Kariba Culture In a world made smaller by the jet engine and the automobile, there are few places left for the traveller who wants to escape the stresses and strains of the modern world and experience life closer to nature. Zimbabwe is home to one such place. Lake Kariba, running nearly three hundred kilometres from one end to the other, is a paradise for the discerning tourist who wants to catch a glimpse of an unspoilt Africa that has all but disappeared from the rest of the continent. Visitors to the lake can enjoy the unique privilege of viewing copious wildlife not just from a minibus, but from the tranquillity of a sailboat, canoe, or other craft on the water itself. Elephant, lion, buffalo, waterbuck, duiker, leopard, jackal, impala, kudu, zebra and even the occasional rhino can all be seen from extraordinary vantage point. But the lake is not only for wildlife enthusiasts; those who come to fish, sail, canoe, explore the indigenous culture or simply relax at the waters edge will all be richly rewarded. This is an Africa far removed from the bustle of mass tourism - it is a magical, primeval Africa that will linger in the mind for the rest of your life. Kariba is no less entrancing for being an artificial lake. Sandwiched between Zambia to the North and Zimbabwe to the south, it was created when the flow of the mighty Zambezi River was harnessed at Kariba Dam to generate hydro electricity for both countries. The construction of the dame and the power station beneath it remains one of the most spectacular feats of engineering ever undertaken in Africa. Today, Lake Kariba is the third largest man made reservoir in the world, its two thousand kilometres of shoreline creating a spectacular variety of estuaries that spill into the surrounding bush.

The Japan Foundation Library Support Programme The Japan Foundation Library Support Programme promotes research on and understanding of Japan through donations of books related to Japan to higher educational institutions (excluding elementary and secondary educational organisations) and large public libraries.
Harare City Library On 15th November, 2003, Ambassador Tsuneshige Iiyama handed-over books related to Japan that were donated by the Japan Foundation through its Library Support Programme. The donation to the Harare City Library amounted to US$2,800 and became the first large public library to benefit from this scheme in Zimbabwe. Ambassador Iiyama expressed his hope that the donated books shall be used and enjoyed to the full extent and that Japanese culture, history, politics, economics, literature, art, religion and law be a medium for that essential process of personal discovery, while at the same time bridging the gap between Japan and Zimbabwe which are geographically very far from each other. Zimbabwe Open University and the University of Zimbabwe were also beneficiaries in 2002, followed by Africa University in 2004.
