Members of the horse family, zebras are fleet-footed, hoofed, African mammals that have a distinctive coat patterned in stripes of black or brown and white or buff. Each animal's stripe pattern is as distinctive as a human's fingerprint.
There are three types of zebra: plains zebra, Grevy's zebra and mountain zebra. The head and body of a zebra measures, on average, 7-1/2 feet in length, and its tail is 22 inches. At the shoulder, a zebra stands 4 to 5 feet. It weighs as much as 770 pounds.
The hearing of zebras is keen and their large ears rotate to locate sounds. Their eyesight is sharp, and a zebra's night vision is as good as an owl's.

Zebras are large, fast-running mammals that live on African grassy plains (savannas) . They can run up to 40 mph (65 kph) in short bursts in order to escape from predators (like lions and hyenas). The zebra's life span is about 28 years. Zebras are closely related to horses and donkeys Families and Herds : Zebras are very social animals and live in large, stable family groups which are led by females. Stallions (males) watch the rear of the group in order to help protect them from predators. Families will sometimes merge to form large herds. Anatomy : Zebra fur has distinctive white stripes on a black background. No two zebras have the same pattern. These stripes may help to confuse predators chasing the zebra, making them misjudge distances. Zebras have hoofed feet. They are over 4 feet (1.2 m) tall at the shoulder and weigh over 600 pounds (270 kg). They have a long, upright, bristly, black and white mane. Large eyes and ears help the zebra detect predators early, allowing it to run away. Diet : Zebras eat grasses; they are nomadic herbivores. They spend most of their time grazing. Zebras need to drink water often and usually stay close to a watering hole.

You are here: BBC Animals Children's Zone Zebra Zebras are famous for their black and white stripes, but no-one really knows why these African horses have patterned coats. Some people think the stripes act as camouflage, while others have suggested that they help the animals to keep cool. No two zebras have exactly the same markings, and scientists now think that they use their striped patterns to help them recognise each other. There are three species of zebra, and they are all found in Africa. The common or Burchell's zebra is the most widely distributed, and can be found on grassy plains and savannah throughout most of eastern and southern Africa. The other two species are endangered. Grevy's zebra are found in northern Kenya and Ethiopia, while the small populations of mountain zebra only exist in South Africa. Zebras are members of the horse family. They have hooved feet, tufted tails and a mane on the back of their necks which stands upright rather than hanging down like a horse's. Their teeth are well adapted for a vegetarian diet. They have large, powerful molars for grinding up grasses, leaves, roots and bark.

Student consultants, known as "Zebras", are available to assist students with the basics of using ACS computer labs. They are called Zebras because of their distinctive black and white shirts.
Zebras can help you with electronic mail, word processing, programming tools, locally-supported packages, printing, and on-line documentation. However, if you are seeking help with software applications and techniques that are specific to your course, you will need to speak with your instructor or TA instead of a Zebra.
Zebras are available when classes are in session during the fall, winter, and spring quarters (but not during finals week). They are available for very limited hours during the summer.

Plains Zebra
Equus burchellii Subspecies: There are five subspecies of plains zebras, plus one subspecies (Burchell's, E. b. burchellii ) that is extinct. The existing subspecies are Grant's ( E. b. boehmi ), Upper Zambezi ( E. b. zambesiansis ), Crawshay's ( E. b. crawshayi ), Chapman's ( E. b. chapmani ), and Damara ( E. b. antiquorum ). The boehmi and antiquorum subspecies are classed as 'Lower Risk' for extinction, but there is insufficient data for the remaining subspecies to assess risk. Distribution: Plains zebras occur throughout the southeastern portions of the African continent. There has been some contraction from their historical geographic range, but not as much as for many other large herbivore species. Ecology: Plains zebras are primarily grazers, and inhabit grasslands and open shrublands or woodlands. Zebras remain fairly close to water, and must drink daily. With the exception of needing water, plains zebras can inhabit a wide variety of habitats, and areas from near sea level to more than 3,500 m. Zebras form small harems, with a single stallion and up to six females, plus offspring. Males without harems will form sometimes large bachelor groups. Conservation Status: The taxonomic status of the subspecies of plains zebra is not yet well understood, and experts do not agree on details. Some experts think that the extinct quagga of South Africa was a subspecies of plains zebra. More than three-quarters of plains zebras are

Species > Mountain Zebra Mountain zebra are classified as endangered.
Mountain Zebra
Equus zebra Subspecies: There are two subspecies of mountain zebra, E. z. zebra and E. z. hartmannae . These are known as the Cape mountain zebra, and Hartmann's mountain zebra, respectively. Distribution: Mountain zebras occur in Namibia, and in southwestern South Africa. Their historic range in South Africa has collapsed to the point it is best represented by disjoint occurrences. Introductions of mountain zebra have been conducted, sometimes in areas outside their historic range. Other occurrences outside their historic range are due to new water sources, which make the habitat suitable. Ecology: Mountain zebras select mountain grasslands and open woodlands, and will move to protected stream bottoms in cold weather. These zebras are grazers, eating grasses and forbs, but some shrubs are used. Small herds form, with a stallion leading a group of females; the distributions of groups may overlap, rather than be territorial. Conservation Status: Recommendations: A goal has been established for the Cape mountain zebra population to be 2,500 animals. Recommendations have been made to help attain that goal, including rules for reintroducing populations, supporting conservation of existing populations, and aiding managers to increase the likelihood of population persistence. Managers and those providing animals for reintroductions are also encouraged to maintain distance between populations of Cape mountain zebra and Hartmann's mountain zebra, to maintain genetic separation. Moreover, the genetics of the two subspecies should be more thoroughly explored. Research into the effects of diseases on these zebras is encouraged. Lastly, their conflicts with local communities should be studied, with an eye toward reducing poaching.

September 8 - October 20, 2005
Interactive sessions: Thursdays; 9/8, 9/15, 9/22, 9/29, 10/6, 10/13; 10:00 -11:00 PM ET (USA) COURSE DESCRIPTION
Increased international movement of people and animals, and the current geopolitical climate, make incursions of exotic diseases more likely than ever before. The national response to an exotic disease incursion begins with the local practicing veterinarian, who must be able to rapidly recognize the clinical signs and scenarios that are suggestive of various exotic diseases. This course will review the major exotic and emerging animal diseases, emphasizing the clinical signs and gross lesions of these diseases in various species and the role of the practitioner and other professionals. Major emphasis will be placed on including exotic diseases in the differential diagnosis of various clinical presentations and the importance of laboratory support for the diagnosis of both “horses and zebras.” Course Outline: Week 1:(Sept 8):
Overview of exotic animal diseases: global perspectives, potential modes of entry, diagnosis, response and control, role of the practitioner
