Grevy's Zebra Grevy's Zebra: Equus grevyi Distribution: northern Kenya, Somalia and eastern Ethiopia. Habitat: dry savanna country. Description: Size: length : 2.1-2.3m, tail 50cm. Shoulder height : 1.5m. Weight: Life span: 25-30 years. Food: grasses and some foliage. Grevy's zebra is the largest of all the zebras and it is an endangered species. Grevy was not the discoverer of this species, but a President of France who received the first specimens known to the scientific world. It is widely believed and accepted that this zebra was the famed "hippotigris" (horse-tiger) of the Roman circus, so the specimens so graciously received by President Grevy may have been new to science, but they had been known by much earlier Europeans. At first glance all zebra species look very similar to one another, but Grevy's zebra is probably the most easily recognised of them all. It is a very striking, tall zebra with huge ears and narrow stripes which encircle the rump in a concave pattern.

Plains Zebra
Name: Zebra Scientific name: Equus burchelli Range: Eastern, Southwestern, and Southern Africa Habitat: open grassy plains, some in mountains Status: some extinct species Diet in the wild: grazing animals, grass Diet in the zoo: Location in the zoo:  African Hoof Stock Exhibit Physical description: Height 4-5ft. Zebras can weigh up to 300kg and become up to 2.40 meters long. Each Zebra has its own stripe pattern. Zebras are black with white stripes.  General information Zebras like to live in long lasting family herds and a stallion controls each family. The stallion defends the herd against potential rivals and predators such as hyenas. A zebra can become up to 20 years old or in a zoo up to 28 years old. Special anatomical, physiological or behavioral adaptations Each zebra has its own stripe pattern. The zebras recognize each other by their stripe pattern and by their smell. Some species have narrow close set stripes, while others have broader stripes. Zebras like to help groom each other. There are three living species of zebras: Grevy's zebra, Cape Mountain zebra, and the Plains Zebra, which has several subspecies, including the now extinct Quagga.   Zebra Trivia Here is a really neat fact! Did you know that the phylogeny of equids is the most heavily documented fossil record of evolutionary development for any animal group?

*See Equus for other species. Zebras are members of the horse family native to central and southern Africa . All have vividly contrasting black and white vertical stripes (hence the zebra crossing named after it) on the forequarters, often tending towards the horizontal at the rear of the animal. Originally, most zoologists assumed that the stripes acted as a camouflage mechanism, while others believed them to play a role in social interactions, with slight variations of the pattern allowing the animals to distinguish between individuals. A more recent theory, supported by experiment, posits that the disruptive coloration is an effective means of confusing the visual system of the blood-sucking tsetse fly There are three species and many subspecies . Zebra populations vary a great deal, and the relationships between and the taxonomic status of several of the subspecies are unclear.

About this page... For three summers during my undergraduate career at the University of Puget Sound, I worked for the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries as an analyst and computer support person. For the most part, the databases I used were accessed via batch on some old IBM mainframes (using JCL, for heaven's sake!). My co-worker, Bill, was a big tea drinker. In fact, he bought Red Rose tea in bulk. In the spirit of modern cereal manufacturers (I guess), Red Rose decided to include a "prize" in their boxes of tea bags. One such prize turned out to be a small (approximately 1 inch tall) ceramic zebra. Later that day, our co-worker on the other side of the cubicle, Francis, received an interesting delivery in the mail. Well, actually, it had to be delivered to her on a hand-cart. Somehow, she had accidentally printed off several reams of unneeded printouts. Bill and I enjoyed giving Francis a hard time when such things happened... and she enjoyed razzing us from time to time, too. For some unknown reason, Bill and I decided to give her the Zebra as a reminder of her error. From that point on, the Zebra became a symbol of errors, screw-ups, mistakes, and general flakiness. Needless to say, the Zebra rested atop my monitor often. Gradually, I became known as

34. Perissodactyla
Taxonomy of the order of horses, zebras, tapirs and rhinoceroses, with biological descriptions of many individual species.
http://www.ultimateungulate.com/perissodactyla.html
Return to Homepage O RDER Perissodactyla Perissodactyls are a small order of herbivores, consisting of the rhinoceroses, horses and tapirs. They are distinguished from the other true ungulates - the artiodactyls - by their odd number of toes. This order flourished in the Eocene, with over eleven different families spread over the globe. The perissodactyls contained some of the largest land mammals of all time, including Indricotherium , a relative of the rhinoceros which stood over 5 meters tall at the shoulder and weighed an estimated 15-20 tons! The diversity of odd-toed ungulates has continually declined since the Oligocene, with only 17 species in 6 genera surviving in the world at the present day. Although the remaining species are found across the globe, they are mere remnants of a bygone evolutionary marvel overshadowed by the modern artiodactyl assemblage. Today, with the exception of domestic horses and donkeys, all species of perissodactyls are found in relatively low numbers. (pai'ris-oh dak ti'lah) from Greek perissos

A popular time for all the animals at HiView is "Dinnertime" Llamas are also right at home in the environment of HiView. Some facts about the LLama Llamas are members of the Camel family. Technically, they are camelids.
In the New World, there are four different camelids. Three are in the genus Lama, the llama, the alpaca, and the guanaco. One is in its own genus vigunae, the vicuna. The llama and the alpaca are both domesticated animals, and have never been wild. The llama is considerably larger than the alpaca. In South American, llamas are used for pack animals, production of fiber for rugs and ropes, meat, and even used their dung for fuel. In South America, the alpaca is used for fine fiber production, meat, and their dung for fuel.
In the United States, llamas are used for light draft, fiber production, show, companion and guard animals. Alpacas are used for fine fiber production and show in the United States. Information about the Llama was gathered from llamaweb.com

40. Terry Thornton's Bird Keeping Experiences.
General information and pictures of gouldians, zebras, bengalese, diamond doves, and fife canaries. Also has a birdkeeping diary.
http://freespace.virgin.net/thornton.applehaigh/main.htm
Gouldians Zebras Bengalese Diamond Doves ... My Awards A little about me and this site:- I am Terry Thornton , 50 years young, married to Christine my long suffering wife for 27 years and living in the county of South Yorkshire in England. I have been keeping and breeding birds, mainly foreign finches, for about 23 years. When we moved to our present home I started out with 6 breeding cages and a small flight inside an 8 foot by 6 foot (2.4m x 1.8m) insulated shed. My collection at that time was made up of a few grey and fawn zebra finches and a pair of diamond doves. Eventually as always happens numbers increased and more accommodation was required. I constructed 2 more cages under the windows along the side opposite my original cages. Soon even this was not enough as the number of breeding pairs increased, bengalese had now been added. Out came the flight and three sets of triple breeding cages were constructed with the original 3 sets of double breeders being relocated at the end of the shed. Unfortunately when I came to install the triple cages they were found to be ¼ inch (6mm) too long. After much screaming and tearing out of hair I finally took them apart and shortened them. Approximately 14 years ago I decided that I needed more room for my growing collection so my 14 foot by 8 foot (4.3m x 2.4m) greenhouse was converted into a further shed 5 foot by 8 foot (1.5m x 2.4m) with 9 foot by 8 foot (2.7m x 2.4m) aviary attached. The aviary was planted, mainly with an elderberry bush (quick growing, as aviary plants have to be to withstand the constant nibbling from little beaks). Six cages were built into the small shed, three at each side with a flight at the back leading out into the aviary. Now things were really moving with peach faced lovebirds, hecks grass finches and star finches swelling the ranks. The number of zebra finches and budgerigars was increasing rapidly, as they do, and I knew the present setup would soon be too small to accommodate the growing numbers and increasing variety.
