General Information Summer Program Summer Session 1 Summer Session 2 ... Summer Faculty Physical Geography Experience in Africa While Academic Travel has been a long-standing tradition at Franklin, this is the first time summer courses are being offered with an academic travel component. This presents a unique opportunity to study and visit the destination with a professor who knows the area like a native guide (not a tour guide – but an academic guide). Students are prepared with in-depth lectures for three weeks on the Lugano campus before spending two weeks on location in Malawi and Zambia. Coupled with the Lugano experience, this study travel offers a broader view of the world that can’t be found in a textbook or documentary. SCI 281 Physical Geography (Lugano/Malawi/Zambia) - 4 credits Prof. Anne Maran Flutti, First Session This course combines three weeks of classroom instruction in Lugano with a two-week field trip experience in Malawi and Zambia in South Central Africa. Weeks one to three (May 30-June 16): Class lectures at the Franklin College Lugano Campus Weeks four to five (June 19-June 30): Daily excursions and field observations in Malawi and Zambia The course covers the fundamental concepts of earth systems, to include the Big Bang theory and the technologies and methods related to the analysis of geographic data. Modern mapping technologies, patterns of climate change and the biogeography of tropical grasslands and savannahs are also included in the course. Field studies in Malawi and Zambia include local ecosystem analysis and the impact of human settlements from the paleogeographic period to the present.

Introduction Search bibliography Zambia General information Zambia , a land-locked country, lies between latitudes 8 o and 18 oS and 22 o and 34 o E longitude in southern Africa . The country has a total area of 752,614 square kilometer. The country is mainly a plateau with an altitude range of 900 -1350 m. Some valleys lie below 310 m. It has tropical climate modified by altitude. Rainy season lasts from October to April. Out of 740,724 sq km land area 7.08 % is arable land. Zambia has an estimated population of 10.31 million (July 2003) with an annual growth rate of 1.52 %. Agriculture accounts for 22 % of GDP and employs 85 % of labor force. Importance of groundnut Most of the groundnut produced in Zambia is grown by resource poor smallholder farmers. It is a good source for cash income and vegetable protein to low-income groups. Confectionary nuts make up the bulk of production and consumption in the country ( Sandhu et al 1986). Groundnut production fell sharply in late 1970s and early 1980s. It has started increasing since late 1980s. Production environment The Eastern and Central provinces are the major groundnut producing regions in the country. Bulk of the production takes place in the central plateau of Eastern province. Groundnut is grown mainly as a rainfed crop. It is grown during the wet season, which starts in November and lasts until March/April. In the eastern and central regions, where annual rainfall ranges from 800 to 1100 mm, long-season Virginia varieties can be grown. These varieties mature in 140 to 160 days. But the southern and western regions, which receive less than 800 mm annual rainfall, are suitable only for short-season Spanish varieties ( Sandhu et al 1984). The short season Spanish varieties mature in 110 to 120 days.

During the 1920s and 1930s, advances in mining spurred development and immigration. The name was changed to Zambia upon independence in 1964. In the 1980s and 1990s, declining copper prices and a prolonged drought hurt the economy. Elections in 1991 brought an end to one-party rule, but the subsequent vote in 1996 saw blatant harassment of opposition parties.
