Wedding Traditions Here are some African wedding traditions. You may wish to be creative in adapting these traditions to your wedding. Africa is made up of various different countries, each of which may have their own traditions. Many of these traditions would not be acceptable to the African American bride as it may require lifestyle changes which would be unacceptable. Ankole Wedding Traditions Ankole was a most important lake kingdom in prestige and population. The king owned all the cattle and theoretically owned all its women. Hima fathers were anxious to call attention to their daughters because the king gave generous wedding gifts. Should she marry her husband would be a future king and that meant her family would share the glory. Slim girls were unfit for royalty so those girls whom the king found to be of interest to marry one of his sons were force fed with milk until very heavy, barely able to walk.

Zambia African Art, Crafts, and Curios Are Exotic and Beautiful
Have you ever considered what can easily bring a smile on your face? Exotic works of Zambia African art can bring a smile to your face. And a smiling face is a reflection of a relaxed mind. That is what art of Africa will do for you. Victoria Falls Curio Stall Consider this! The phrase “tyranny of familiarity” is rather an interesting concept. Zambia African art being exotic and not exactly familiar does not fall under this idea. Take your home for instance. It can become too familiar because you see and feel it everyday. The home becomes a little different, perhaps a wee bit boring? That reminds me. Once a professor paused this question in class. Who has an advantage? A fish in water or a fisher? Someone squealed; “A fish” The professor said; “No! It isn’t the fish. The poor creature has even forgotten it is in water. Only until it jumps out of the water does the fish realize water exists. Its like air to humans or mammals on land. The fisherman is the lucky fellow because he can observe both the water and the fish.” But then, I digressed.... Where was I? Aah! ....the home is a bit different. The sight has become all too familiar because of the “tyranny of familiarity”. It requires

Zambian Culture
Zambia, formerly known as Northern Rhodesia, is made up of 72 tribes living in 9 provinces. While English is the official language of Zambia, many tribal languages are still spoken. The main tribal groups are Bemba, Nyanja, Lozi and Tonga with Bemba being the most widely spoken native language. Approximately 75% of the country is Christian, though many tribes combine Christianity with their own indigenous beliefs. Zambian music is typically drum based and is used to accompany native dances. Marijke du Toit
(Department of Historical Studies, University of Natal, Durban) pursued two related projects on documentary photography while at Emory. The first, Photographing Poverty in Pre-Apartheid South Africa (1916-1948) , examined visual images of people framed as problematically poor within a broader context of picturing working-class persons. She placed these images within South Africa's changing visual economy and considered the development of local traditions of social documentary photography in relation to poverty. Throughout, she examined the dynamics of racialized social documentary portraiture. Du Toit also worked on the Durban South Photography Project , a collaborative venture with photographer Jenny Gordon that aims to portray life in Durban's southern industrial basin. The project combines contemporary social documentary photography with research into personal and familial photography. A central aspect of the project is an annual workshop and exhibition - residents take photographs, make albums and choose family photographs to exhibit. Du Toit reflected on this dynamic of local exhibitions and planned towards further exhibitions that are to include Gordon's photographs. Her other primary research interest is feminist history of Afrikaner nationalism and her work in this area has been published in several journals and books.

My Thoughts
As you probably know, the adult population of Africa has been decimated by AIDS, leaving a large population of orphans (many of whom also have AIDS). As we learned from our host, Bishop Greg Chetan of the Fire-Baptized Church in Zambia
Construction began on the first Children's Village in the fall of 2001. Because of generous financial support of the project by Bristol Christan Fellowship and excellent project management by the primary contractor, Alex Mwasa, the project progressed rapidly, particularly by African standards. After a few short months, the first building was complete and the second was taking shape. We arrived about 6 months after the project began to the scene shown on in my photojournal. With or team of 19 people from the US and UK, we nearly doubled the number of workers on the project. In the two weeks we were there, the combined Team Zambia put almost all of the finishing touches on the second building, including outside plaster work, door and window frames, draft ceiling, cement floors, tile work, plumbing, and electrical.
As can be expected from any trip to another culture, we learned a lot. This was a particularly fruitful trip in that regard, since we were nearly equal in number to the Zambia construction workers and worked side-by-side with them for nearly two weeks! The official language in Zambia is English, which also helped (though, like most of Africa, tribal languages are spoken in preference to the official national language). Probably the most valuable lesson learned is that people across the world are not so different as you might think. When you visit another culture (this makes my 7th distinct world culture), look for commonality. And, if you do talk about "my" culture and "your" culture, make sure you spent at least 90% of your time talking about the similarities, otherwise you risk building walls rather than bridges.
