Border countries include Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire), Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania and Zimbabwe. Zambia sits on a high plateau, sloping sharply in the north down to Lake Tanganyika which Zambia shares with Tanzania, Burundi and Congo (Zaire). There are three major rivers; the Zambezi which forms the border with Namibia and Zimbabwe, the Kafue which flows into the Zambezi south of Lusaka (the Capital) and the Luangwa which also flows into the Zambezi. Zambia's most impressive geographical aspect is Victoria Falls which is shared with Zimbabwe. On the Zambezi river at Livingstone, the falls are 2kms wide, 100m deep and 546 million cubic meters of water flow over them every minute.

Namibia
... Mozambique Zambia lies on the Central African Plateau and at the southern end of the Great Rift Valley. A number of early stone age sites have been uncovered throughout the country, the main sites are located at Kalambo Falls in the north and Victoria Falls in the south. Evidence of the use of fire up to 60,000 years ago has been found at Kalambo Falls. By the late stone age, around 15,000 years ago, people were using cave shelters and creating rock paintings of which unfortunately only a few have survived due to Zambia's humid climate. These early people were probably of San descent, as in other areas of Southern Africa.
They brought with them domestic animals, pottery and tool making skills and began to concentrate on agriculture and a more settled way of life. With the discovery of copper around AD350, mining began and currency and jewellery was made.

PEOPLE
The population
Recent statistics suggest that Zambia's population stands at about ten million, and this is increasing by around 3% per year. About 49% of Zambia's population are under 15 years of age, whilst some 73% of those above age 15 are literate. About 10% of Zambians live in Lusaka. Statistics indicate that the average life expectancy for a Zambian is 42 years. Around 99% of the population are black African in origin, and the remaining 1% are mostly people of European or Indian origin. However, the statistics say nothing of the warmth that the sensitive visitor can encounter. If you venture into the rural areas, take a local bus, or try to hitchhike with the locals, you will often find that Zambians are curious about you. Chat to them openly, as fellow travellers, and you will find most Zambians to be delightful. They will be pleased to assist you where they can, and as keen to help you learn about them and their country as they are interested in your lifestyle and what brings you to Zambia... CULTURE
Festivals
Zambia has several major cultural festivals which, on the whole, are rarely seen by visitors. If you can get to one, then you will find them to be very genuine occasions, where ceremonies are performed for the benefit of the local people and the participants, and not for the odd tourist who is watching. Cultural celebrations were strongly encouraged during Kenneth Kaunda's reign, as he favoured people being aware of their cultural origins. 'A country without culture is like a body without a head', was one of his phrases. Thus during the 1980s one group after another 'discovered' old traditional festivals. Most are now large local events, partly cultural but also part political rally, religious gathering, and sports event. Bear in mind that, like most celebrations worldwide, these are often accompanied by the large-scale consumption of alcohol. To see these festivals properly, and to appreciate them, you will need a good guide: someone who understands the rituals, can explain their significance, and can instruct you on how you should behave. After all, how would you feel about a passing Zambian traveller who arrives, with curiosity, at your sibling's wedding (a small festival), in the hope of being invited to the private reception? Photographers will find superb opportunities at such colourful events, but should behave with sensitivity. Before you brandish your camera, remember to ask permission from anyone who might take offence.

Some ethnic groups are small, and only two have enough people to constitute at least 10% of the population. Most Zambians are subsistence farmers. The predominant religion is a blend of traditional beliefs and Christianity; Christianity is the official national religion. Expatriates, mostly British (about 15,000) or South African, live mainly in Lusaka and in the Copperbelt in northern Zambia, where they are employed in mines and related activities. Zambia also has a small but economically important Asian population, most of whom are Indians. The country is 44% urban. The HIV/AIDS epidemic is ravaging Zambia. Nearly 1 million Zambians are HIV positive or have AIDS. An estimated 100,000 will die in 2004. Over a half million Zambian children have been orphaned. Life expectancy at birth is 37.
Population
note: estimates for this country explicitly take into account the effects of excess mortality due to AIDS; this can result in lower life expectancy, higher infant mortality and death rates, lower population and growth rates, and changes in the distribution of population by age and sex than would otherwise be expected (July 2004 est.)

Biography The indigenous hunter-gatherer occupants of Zambia began to be displaced or absorbed by more advanced migrating tribes about 2,000 years ago. The major waves of Bantu-speaking immigrants began in the 15th century, with the greatest influx between the late 17th and early 19th centuries. They came primarily from the Luba and Lunda tribes of southern Democratic Republic of Congo and northern Angola but were joined in the 19th century by Ngoni peoples from the south. By the latter part of that century, the various peoples of Zambia were largely established in the areas they currently occupy.
Except for an occasional Portuguese explorer, the area lay untouched by Europeans for centuries. After the mid-19th century, it was penetrated by Western explorers, missionaries, and traders. David Livingstone, in 1855, was the first European to see the magnificent waterfalls on the Zambezi River. He named the falls after Queen Victoria, and the Zambian town near the falls is named after him.
In 1888, Cecil Rhodes, spearheading British commercial and political interests in Central Africa, obtained a mineral rights concession from local chiefs. In the same year, Northern and Southern Rhodesia (now Zambia and Zimbabwe, respectively) were proclaimed a British sphere of influence. Southern Rhodesia was annexed formally and granted self-government in 1923, and the administration of Northern Rhodesia was transferred to the British colonial office in 1924 as a protectorate.

Livingstone has the air of a colonial outback frontier town. The main attraction in town is the Livingstone Museum that has many relics and items owned by the famous explorer of the same name. Here visitors can try to decipher the handwritten letters penned by Livingstone to his family in Scotland. Cultural enthusiasts will be keen to visit Chief Mukuni's village. In this earthy environment, guests are given an introduction to the lifestyle and customs of the local tribe where dancing, arts and crafts are all available. Walking trails through the Zoological Park gives visitors a chance to exercise and to spot the many species of game. This rain forest is best known for its giraffe population, but here one can see baboon, warthog, zebra, sable, wildebeest and a variety of antelope. The Zambezi Waterfront is designed to attract the more adventurous traveller who wishes to experience the great Zambezi River, the Victoria Falls and its wildlife surrounds.

Mention the word "Zambia" and you will conjure up widely divergent impressions in the minds of Elephant encounter. (Lower Zambezi, Zambia). Back to Top Lusaka
Lusaka is a city with a certain shabby charm, and its people are friendly and cosmopolitan. The Canoe safari. (Lower Zambezi River, Zambia) name Lusaka is derived from that of a Lenje headman, Lusaaka, whose ruled a nearby village when the railway came through in 1906. A railway siding was built at the spot, and a capital city has grown up around it. Until that time, the area was relatively uninhabited, except for a notorious population of marauding lions. In fact, on the very night that the siding was laid, lions killed several oxen almost beneath the wheels of the shunting engine. The town was chartered in 1913, but when the First World War broke out, attentions turned elsewhere, building stopped and the town stagnated. It roused itself from that stagnation in 1929 and has spent little time looking back since.
