Land of the Midnight Sun
A History of the Yukon, Second Edition Ken S. Coates and William R. Morrison

This completely revised edition of Land of the Midnight Sun, first published in 1988, is a comprehensive overview of Yukon history. This book places the Klondike Gold Rush within the broader sweep of the past, giving particular emphasis to the role of First Nations people and Aboriginal-white relations and to the lengthy struggle of Yukoners to find their place in the Canadian confederation. This broader story incorporates the mammoth dredges that scoured the Klondike creeks, the impressive silver mines in the Elsa-Keno Hill area, the sinking of the Princess Sophia, the Yukon's remarkable contributions to the war effort in World War I, and the sweeping transformations associated with the American "occupation" during World War II.
"Sudden miracles, quick turns of fortune, and deeds of endurance and courage and of mind-numbing folly have characterized most of the less-celebrated periods of the Yukon's past. In their carefully researched and well-written Land of the Midnight Sun, Ken Coates and William Morrison have managed to salvage most of the story." - The Globe and Mail
Ken S. Coates is provost and dean of academics at Sea to Sky University in Squamish, British Columbia, and an adjunct professor of political studies at the University of Saskatchewan. William R. Morrison is professor of history at the University of Northern British Columbia. In addition to independent publications, they have published ten books together, including Strange Things Done: A History of Murder in the Yukon.

" I remember flying over this area almost 35 years ago when I was working for forestry and thinking...that's it. I was looking for a place where I could raise falcons, wild sheep and other animals.. and there it was. I was really excited. It had water, cliffs, grasslands, everything all in one location and the guy who owned it was willing to sell it. I wanted to have a small railway that I could transport tourists around to see the animals but that didn't happen. Maybe you can make that happen. " Danny Nowlan 2004 The board of directors of the Friends of the Yukon Wildlife Preserve comprised a group with expertise in business, economics, administration, wildlife research, education, computer technology and wildlife film. In March 2003, the Society published a planning document, ?Yukon Wildlife Preserve-A Business Plan for its Future?, to assist in attracting government and private sector support to save the Yukon Wildlife Preserve. The envisioned support was not obtainable. Successful in convincing government of the value of this facility, but unsuccessful in encouraging their financial support, the Friend's dissolved the Association in 2003

History of the Yukon River Quest
How it all began...
Dyea to Dawson Centennial Race to the Klondike, 1997-98 In 1997 and 1998, up to 50 two-person teams hiked over the 33-mile Chilkoot Trail from Dyea, Alaska to Lake Bennett, and then got in their canoes and paddled 100 miles of headwater lakes to the beginning of the Yukon River in Whitehorse, where they continued on for another 460 miles to Dawson City. The event was a tremendous success, drawing adventure athletes from around the world, but the best teams were always the best paddlers. The 1997 event was won by the Fairbanks, Alaska team of Jim Lokken and Art Ward, and the 1998 event was won by the international team of Solomon Carriere of Cumberland House, Sask. and Steve Landick of Marquette, Mich. The event was held only during those Klondike Gold Rush centennial years because its length made it a two-week event and difficult logistically to manage year after year, but there was tremendous interest among racers in continuing part of the event.

Print Preview of Section Indigenous peoples had been living in the Yukon for many years before the early explorers arrived in the first half of the 19th century. Explorers looking for a Northwest Passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean probed the Yukon’s northern coast, while fur traders from the Hudson’s Bay Company learned the region’s inland waterways and mountain ranges. Of these early explorers, Robert Campbell, who explored the Pelly River, and John Bell, who explored the Porcupine and Yukon rivers, are best known. After the Dominion of Canada was formed in 1867, the Yukon was administered as part of the Northwest Territories.

History
Beginnings
Until the late 1980s, most of the electrical generation facilities in the North were owned by the federal government's Northern Canada Power Commission. In 1987, all of the Commission's assets in the Yukon were devolved to the Yukon government. The territorial government formed Yukon Energy Corporation to take over these assets. Yukon Energy, in turn, gave the Yukon Electrical Company Limited the license to manage and operate the generating facilities. In 1997, Yukon Energy decided not to renew its contract with the Yukon Electrical Company but instead opted to operate and manage its own assets. It was a challenging task; within a few short months, we had to hire a new workforce and take on the many functions needed to run the company. That same year, the Anvil Range mine in Faro - the territory’s largest energy consumer - shut down in June and re-opened in October, only to close for good in January 1998.
Fire!
It was in this climate that Yukon Energy was faced with a major setback. Early in the morning of October 30, 1997, a disastrous fire started that knocked out three of the four Whitehorse hydroelectric turbines and our entire office complex, including the centre that allows operators to control and monitor, by computer, the 23 hydro and diesel generators in the Yukon.

Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. The Yukon Territory's Dempster Highway takes motorists through mountains and tundra. During the late nineteenth century, the great Klondike gold rush created a well-beaten path to Dawson City, but the northern reaches of Canada's Yukon Territory long remained relatively inaccessible. The construction of the Dempster Highway, which was completed in 1979, established a road link from near Dawson City (now simply called Dawson) all the way to Inuvik, in the Northwest Territories. This gravel (and sometimes dirt) road is one of just two public highways in North America that cross the Arctic Circle; a third is under construction. Intent on exploring the environment along this route, my wife and I set out on the highway very early one August morning, with plans to drive north and reach the outpost of Eagle Plains, 255 miles away, by nightfall. Because no services or facilities are available in between (except for a couple of government-operated campgrounds), we made sure our vehicleappropriately, a GMC Yukonhad a full tank of gas.

History of the Yukon Liquor Corporation
After two years of the control system in the Yukon Territory, the sale of beer glass was approved in the early 1920's. Because of the very small population licensing was confined to a few settlements with certain discretionary authority held by the Commissioner in more remote areas. In the early days, the Liquor Vendors in Dawson City and Mayo worked side by side with the Government Agents. As the Yukon Population increased and became less transient, the Agent's duties were combined with the vendors giving them Territorial Agent status. By 1948, there were government liquor stores in Dawson City, Mayo and Whitehorse. In 1954, Haines Junction was operating and in 1958 Watson Lake. By the late 1960's a sixth store was opened in Faro to serve the needs of the people flooding into the community in hopes of finding work at the new lead-zinc mine. Six liquor stores and central warehousing facilities in Whitehorse, now service the requirements of more than three hundred licenses as well as permit holders, and the general public. The Corporation operates under the mandate that it shall regulate the purchase, import, storage, distribution, and sale of all alcoholic beverages within the Yukon, under the requirements of the Liquor Act and Regulations. It also provides that the Corporation conducts its business in a socially responsible manner.

Yukon Natural History Guide Brings Basics Back to Life
June 5, 2002 Whitehorse. CPAWS-Yukon has published a beautiful natural history guide covering the rich diversity of the Yukon from the icy expanses of the St. Elias Mountains, east to the white spruce forests of the Liard River, and north to the arctic tundra at the edge of the Beaufort Sea.
Twenty-three distinct natural regions shape the lands and waters that are home to wildlife and northern people. And, hot off the press, Yukon Wild is a concise, illustrated guide to these natural regions, describing their unique landforms, flora and fauna. Excerpts of writings by different authors highlight how the Yukon wilds stir the spirit of northern peoples. Yukon Wild answers common questions on one of the most pressing issues of our time: the preservation of biological diversity.
  • Biodiversity has become a catchword, but what does it really mean?
  • How can protecting wild species in the north protect our health too?
  • What room will we leave for wilderness and wild species that depend on it?
  • What do we need to do to ensure that in 100 years grizzly bears and caribou will still roam free in the north?
