SPECIAL TO THE SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER A trip to Dawson City, Yukon, always spells adventure. This unique little town at the heart of the Klondike Gold Rush was built on it. . The adventure started during the stampede of 1898, when just getting to Dawson meant surmounting an eternal obstacle course of wild rivers, mountains and muck. . What was once the misery of more than 30,000 gold seekers has since become an outdoor enthusiast's paradise. And Dawson City, with its ideal location and historical significance, serves as the perfect starting point from which to begin your journey.

Government Yukon: History and People History The Yukon was the first area in Canada to be settled by people. It is believed ancestors of the Amerindians inhabited the Yukon 10 000 to 25 000 years ago when they migrated from Asia across a Bering Sea land bridge. The first modern European visitors were Russian traders in the 18th century. Sir John Franklin anchored off the Yukon's Arctic coastline in 1825, and the Hudson's Bay Company moved into the interior in the 1840s using maps and information from Franklin and other early explorers. The Hudson's Bay Company first used the name Yukon in 1846. They named it "Yucon," from the Loucheux Indian word "Yuchoo," meaning the greatest river. U.S. traders arrived after the 1867 Russian sale of Alaska to the United States. Historically, the Yukon is associated with the great Klondike Gold Rush. On August 17, 1896 George Carmack discovered gold on Bonanza Creek, a tributary of the Klondike River. This discovery marked the beginning of what is often considered the world's greatest gold rush. After centuries of quiet habitation indigenous peoples found their lands inundated as gold prospectors pushed northwards from northern British Columbia or moved inland from the Bering Sea. Miners also traveled up the Yukon River by sternwheeler. The town, then city, of Dawson, at the junction of the Klondike and Yukon rivers, and named after the chief Canadian surveyor, came into existence to serve the great gold rush influx.

    Whitehorse History
In 1900, construction of the White Pass and Yukon railway from Skagway to a point past the rapids was completed and Whitehorse came into being at its railhead. For years, Whitehorse continued its role connecting rail service with riverboat traffic to Dawson. In 1920, the first plane landed. In 1942, thousands of American Army personnel arrived to build the Alaska Highway. The boom ceased by the end of the war, but Whitehorse had become an important centre of communications and transportation. Whitehorse was incorporated as a City in 1950 and in 1953 the capital of the Yukon was transferred from Dawson City to Whitehorse. Whitehorse is currently home to 22,241 people according to the June 2003 census. Figures gathered by the Yukon Tourist Bureau estimate that the population of Whitehorse doubles its size during the summer tourist season (Victoria Day to Labour Day). Vehicles have been seen from all Canadian provinces and territories, all mainland USA States and even vehicles bearing European plates can be frequently seen on streets and in the many campgrounds and RV parks.
    Detachment Yukon History
The Detachment was established on 1 February 1970, as Canadian Forces Northern Area Detachment, to improve liaison and coordination with local authorities at the seat of the Yukon Territorial Government. Following the creation of the Northern Command on 15 May 1970, this Detachment and its sister unit in Yellowknife became part of the Northern Region with the Canadian Forces Northern Area Headquarters located in Yellowknife.

Before the first white people moved into the Yukon the tribe of Gwitchin Its officially called Tagish Lake Meteor and has a long history to tell!
    http://www.tagishwildernesslodge.com/etagstory.html
    TAGISH
( Ta-Gish-Ai = indian word for "Where-the-water-stays-open" ) Before the first white people moved into the Yukon the tribe of Gwitchin indians Tagish ) lived as part-nomads along the shores of Tagish Lake. Descents of the Apaches and Athabaskan indians the Tagish tribe members hunted, fished along Tagish Lake in the summer and fall and traded with the coastal Tlingit tribes for hundreds of years. Names like SQUAW POINT (opposite lake side) were common camping places of the Tagish band. In the winter the Tagish tribe members returned to the Six-Mile-River between Tagish and Marsh Lake where the waters remained open most of the time and allowed them to fish. The Goldrush '98 Engineer Mine ( picture 3) on Taku Arm while settlers like Otto and Kate Partridge moved from Millhaven Bay ( Bennett Lake ) to Ben-My-Chree ( picture 5), named after a place on Isle of Man (Girl of my heart). The Partridges were also financial and supportive partners of the goldmine at Ben-My-Chree. After a massive landslide the mine was destroyed and buried their copartners under the rocks. This accident made the Partridges decide not to reopen the mine and homesteaded instead at the mouth of the glacial river, which carried rich soil down from the head of the glacier. Their beautiful flower and vegetable gardens were unique up North. Formerly employed by White Pass and Yukon Route Atlin carried passengers and supplies from Carcross to Taku City ( now abandoned ) were a small trolley system connected both lakes. Sternwheeler trips also carried celebrities to Ben-My-Chree like Duke of Earl and Prince of Wales.

December 12, 2000 A piece of the puzzle that is Yukon history was lost Monday evening with the passing of local photographer, collector, historian and charmer John Hatch. Hatch, who would have turned 64 next month, was described by a friend today as "one of the last larger-than-life characters in the Yukon." Andy Connors, a friend who was working on a documentary of Hatch and the Shipyards area where he lived, recalled the open, giving nature of the man. "He was a true ambassador for frontier Whitehorse. People from all over would be staying at his place, and his hospitality was always free."

    FOR RELEASE #04-281
December 1, 2004 PIERRE BERTON PASSES INTO YUKON HISTORY WHITEHORSE - The Government of Yukon is saddened to learn of the passing of Pierre Berton yesterday.
"Mr. Berton will long be remembered for his literary works depicting the life and times of historical Yukon," Tourism and Culture Minister Elaine Taylor said.
In addition, Berton was instrumental in starting the Berton House Retreat, allowing his childhood home in Dawson City to be used in the pursuit of literary excellence.
The program, initiated by Berton, is organized in partnership with the Canada Council for the Arts by the Berton House Writer's Retreat Society in Whitehorse, and the Klondike Visitors' Association and the Dawson City Libraries' Association in Dawson City.
The retreat, launched in 1996 with Toronto writer, Russell Smith, was enthusiastically supported by Berton who promoted the program, carried out fundraising campaigns and took an active role in selecting its writers.
"Over the years, a number of professional writers have lived and worked in Dawson," Taylor said. "Their benefactor graciously gave his time and expertise to writers, editors and publishers throughout Canada."
During his career, Berton published more than 40 books. He worked as a newspaper columnist, a magazine editor with Maclean's and as a broadcast personality.
