Yukon Government Ignores Yukoners, Opens Peel Watershed to More Oil and Gas Development
The Yukon government has ignored the advice of many Yukoners and, at the bidding of a multinational oil company, is putting key wildlife habitat in the magnificent Peel River watershed at risk. In recent public consultations held by the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources (EMR), First Nation governments, community members and conservationists called on the Yukon Government to postpone oil and gas development in the Peel watershed until land use planning has been done. Serious concerns were also expressed about potential impacts of oil and gas development on the Turner Lakes wetlands, Peregrine Falcons (federally listed species at risk), the Porcupine Caribou Herd and the wilderness values of the Peel watershed. Letter Writing Tips and Yukon Government Contacts
How to write an effective letter
There are many ways in which you can make your voice heard. This could include talking to friends about something you care about, speaking up at a public meeting, or writing a letter. Writing a letter can be a very powerful tool. Those in positions of power or influence do, in fact, react to the letters they receive. They realize that folks care about what is happening, that their actions are being watched, and that they will have to answer for their actions. It is also a very simple tool. You can write a letter at home, edit what you want to say, and focus on what is important to you and avoid being sidetracked. Here are some tips on how to write an effective letter.
  • Keep your letter to one page.
  • Keep your letter to one idea or topic. More than one topic may mean that it gets circulated to several staff for review and it can get misdirected.
  • Address the letter to a particular person. Make a quick phone call to find out whom you should address the letter to. (You can always contact CPAWS at (867) 393-8080 or info@cpawsyukon.org

The following discussion outlines the innovation performance and infrastructure of the Yukon Territory based on the four key areas set out in Canada's Innovation Strategy: knowledge performance, skills, the innovation environment, and strengthening communities.
    Yukon Economic Context
Given the current economic environment, the Yukon faces a variety of issues in addressing the innovation challenge. The mining sector has declined over the last few years, due primarily to low metal prices. Similarly, exploration activity has followed suit and will remain low, as dictated by world markets. Tourism, once considered a mainstay of the Yukon's economy, has decreased over the past two years. However, increased activity in residential and electric utility construction, and strong retail sales, have provided some relief to the weakened economy. The seasonality of the Yukon's economy and the great distance from a major centre continue to restrict economic growth. Strong government spending has kept the Yukon afloat. The Yukon government is dependant on transfers from the federal government, with territorial revenues accounting for only about 20 percent of the Yukon government's income. Government is the primary employer in the Yukon. More than 40 percent of employed Yukoners hold positions with either the federal, territorial, municipal or First Nations governments.

A territory of northwest Canada east of Alaska. It joined the Confederacy in 1898. The region was first explored by fur traders in the 1840s and was acquired by Canada from the Hudson's Bay Company in 1870. A land claim made by the Yukon tribe of Native Americans was approved by the federal government in 1991. Whitehorse is the capital and the largest city. Population: 31,200. var tcdacmd="cc=edu;dt"; Encyclopedia Yukon Territory, territory (1991 pop. 27,797), 207,076 sq mi (536,327 sq km), NW Canada. Geography and Climate The triangle-shaped Yukon territory is bordered on the N by the Beaufort Sea of the Arctic Ocean, on the E by the Northwest Territories, on the S by British Columbia and Alaska, and on the W by Alaska. The highest point in the Yukon is Mt. Logan, 19,551 ft (5,959 m) high, part of the Coast Ranges in the southwest. Although most of the territory is a watershed for the Yukon River and its tributaries, the northern and southeastern regions drain east into the Mackenzie River system. Immediately south of the desolate arctic coast the country is uninhabited and generally unknown. The other parts of the territory have great natural beauty, with snow-fed lakes backed by perpetually white-capped mountains and forests and streams abounding with wildlife. Kluane National Park (est. 1972) is in the St. Elias Mts. Winters are long and cold, with low humidity. During the short summers the longer day and surprisingly warm sun bring a profusion of wildflowers and enable the hardier grains and vegetables to mature.

Yukon Devolution and the Proposed New
    Yukon Act
Introduction The intent of Yukon Devolution is to transfer responsibility for provincial-type programs and services delivered currently by the Northern Affairs Program of Indian and Northern Affairs Canada in the Yukon to the Yukon Government. The new Yukon Act introduced today in the House of Commons will provide the Yukon Government with control over management of public land and resources and water rights in the Yukon, except for those which will remain under federal jurisdiction (e.g., national parks). The new Act will also serve to modernize the language of the existing Yukon Act to reflect more accurately current structures and practices. The Act will not change the constitutional status of the territory. The Government of Canada, the Yukon Government and First Nations will continue to work closely together to ensure a smooth transition of these functions and powers from the federal government to the Yukon Government. The Northern Affairs Program Devolution Transfer Agreement Discussions to transfer land and resource management responsibilities to the Yukon Government began in 1996 when the federal government issued a public consultation paper, followed by a formal federal devolution proposal to the Yukon Government in January, 1997.

YUKON-CANADA AGREEMENT SUPPORTS ECO-FRIENDLY PROJECTS WHITEHORSE, YUKON (January 10, 2002) - Nine environmental Yukon projects will share close to $5 million under the Canada-Yukon Infrastructure Agreement. The agreement, signed last October, will fund municipal type infrastructure projects related to water, sewer or solid waste management. "These funding allocations will help communities achieve needed improvements to their infrastructure," said Larry Bagnell, Yukon MP. "The chosen projects will be funded by the Government of Canada and the Government of Yukon. Local municipal governments will also contribute to the projects in their community." "The Infrastructure Canada program is another example of the Government of Canada's commitment to working in partnership with local governments and the Government of Yukon to improve urban and rural infrastructure and promote strong economic development among First Nations and Northerners," said Robert Nault, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development. "Infrastructure development is a key priority for this government," said Minister of Community and Transportation Services, Pam Buckway. "Utilizing the funds from the Canada-Yukon Infrastructure Program helps make the best use of Yukon government funds, and maximizes federal contributions for these necessary projects."
