Government of Canada funds Yukon College to promote literacy
Date: August 2, 2001 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE WHITEHORSE, YUKON - Mr. Larry Bagnell, Member of Parliament for Yukon, on behalf of the Honourable Jane Stewart, Minister of Human Resources Development Canada, today announced funding of $36,100 through the National Literacy Secretariat, for a project entitled Yukon Culture, History and Cultural Industries Curriculum Development Project. Under this project, Yukon College will produce a literacy curriculum for adult learners that will include two, 6-week modules to explore culture, history and the cultural industries in the Yukon. The modules will incorporate Yukon documents such as: Kwanlin Dun's Memories from Our Students, Old Crow's Recollections booklet, the Carcross Land Claims and Self Government Curriculum and The Klondike Gold Rush Photo History Album. "Good literacy skills are a part of lifelong learning," said Mr. Bagnell. "By supporting Yukon College, the Government of Canada is working to ensure that people have the literacy skills needed to enjoy and fully participate in their community."

History of the Book in Canada: The Yukon
F ew published scholarly resources exist to facilitate development of a history of the book in Yukon. Fundamental work has gathered together basic resources but print culture in Yukon is largely unmapped territory. This paper will suggest avenues by which to approach the mass of archival material available, and attempt to raise historiographical concerns pertinent to authorship, printing, publishing, and reading in Yukon.
Introduction
Yukon, a territory located in the northwestern-most corner of Canada, boasts an area of 483,450 square kilometres and a population of 3,610 Native people and approximately 24,045 non-Native residents. Two events have indelibly marked Yukon history into three periods: the discovery of gold on Rabbit Creek near present-day Dawson in August 1896 and the construction of the Alaska Highway in 1942. Explorers, traders, and missionaries were relatively few in comparison to the indigenous population prior to 1896. The discovery of gold precipitated an unprecedented migration of people to the territory, particularly the Klondike area near Dawson that gave its name to the rush. The migration firmly established print culture in the territory.

New Map Features Yukon Native Place Names
A Yukon News story originally published November 1999 WHITEHORSE A colourful wall map of the Yukon featuring many of its original native place names has just been released by the Yukon Native Language Centre. In vivid shades of red, yellow, pink, orange, and blue, the map depicts the geographical boundaries of Yukon's native languages, and provides the traditional names for many of the territory's geographical features. The map, which will soon be available also in a smaller student version, includes a key to the place names, an inset map of North America showing the location of all the Athapaskan languages, and an attractive logo based on various beadwork motifs in Athapaskan and Tlingit art. Designed as a teaching tool to promote knowledge of traditional Yukon culture and language, the map represents an encapsulation of twenty years of working with First Nations elders to gather data on place names, says Centre director John Ritter. "From the beginning of our work," says Ritter, "the elders insisted that place names be included as an integral facet of language study." "The names are a unique tie to the landscape," he adds. "The names are what provide the link between the language, the culture, the people, and the land."
