The Yugoslavia war is our responsibility
By Sam Webb
The war in Yugoslavia is a major international crisis. It is not a local or even a regional crisis. With each passing day, the war crisis deepens and spreads, engulfing more states and people. To think all of Europe, along with the United States, might be embroiled militarily on one side or another of the hostilities isn't idle speculation. War has a momentum of its own. And this war in particular could easily draw into its web nearly every nation on the European continent unless checked by the actions of tens of millions worldwide. Even if this awful outcome is avoided (and hopefully it will be), new fault lines and divisions on the entire European continent, not to mention between the United States and Russia, are opening because of this bloody conflict. While every major imperialist power with the exception of Japan is now a belligerent in this explosive war, it is U.S. imperialism, our government, and our President that are orchestrating, commanding, and bankrolling this unrestrained and massive assault on the Yugoslav people. It is our government's cruise missiles, Apache helicopters and bombers that are responsible for the civilian deaths and property damage in the billions of dollars.
