The Carpatho-Rusyns, or Ruthenians, are one of the smaller, lesser-known and more successful national minorities living in Yugoslavia today. But what will happen to them if the Vojvodina really is to be the next Kosovo? The Carpatho-Rusyns (also called Ruthenians) are a small Slavic group of just under two million who live primarily in Ukraine, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary and Romania, as well as in diaspora in Yugoslavia, the Czech Republic, the United States and elsewhere. They speak a range of dialects and standardized languages that are officially classified as East Slavic and are written using the Cyrillic alphabet. Most belong to the Greek Catholic Church, but the Orthodox Church also has strong support among the group. Some 250 years ago, Rusyns began migrating south from their homeland in the Carpathian mountains to the Srem and Bačka regions of what is now the Vojvodina in Yugoslavia and Eastern Slavonia in Croatia. At the time, the Carpathian region along with the Srem and Bačka regions were all parts of the Kingdom of Hungary. The first major Rusyn settlement in this region was in Ruski Kerestur (in Serbian, Ruski Krstur), to this day inhabited almost exclusively by Rusyns.

Tindall (DSMZ) for his helpful comments and corrections. Type strains that are not maintained by major culture collections should be obtained from the authors of published descriptions. The Editorial Board of the International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology (IJSEM), and the International Committee on Systematics of Prokaryotes (ICSP), decided in August 2002 that authors of papers in which new names and/or new combinations are proposed provide evidence that types are deposited in two publicly accessible recognized culture collections in two different countries (i.e. documents certifying deposition and public availability of type strains). Papers will not be accepted and new species, new subspecies or new combinations will not be cited in a Validation List without the certificates.
Warning: Several culture collections cited below are not publicly accessible recognized culture collections.

Serbia’a Image in the World
EXIT festival gathers young people from all over the world The image of Serbia in the European countries and the US is chiefly related to war, poverty and instability, and there is a stereotyping of Serbs as aggressive and war-mongering nation, show the results of a poll conducted by “Exit Team” and “TraNSfer” Club od Psychology Students during the EXIT 05 Music Festival The poll was conducted on a sample of 900 Serbian and foreign citizens that visited “EXIT”. Among the foreign nationals, the majority came from the former Yugoslavia republics. Positive view of Serbia is held by the other Eastern countries (Greece, Bulgaria and Romania) and their citizens cite the similar behaviour and worldview as the most positive feature.

Exchange of Cultures National Library of Serbia, Library of Congress in Agreement By DAVID ROACH Librarian of Congress James Billington (left) and Streten Ugricic, director of the National Library of Serbia, share a moment of congratulations after signing a new information exchange agreement for their two institutions. This agreement reestablishes a long-standing exchange of government publications between the Library of Congress and the National Library of Serbia; the exchange was interrupted by the Balkan wars.
Sreten Ugricic, the director of the National Library of Serbia, and Librarian of Congress James H. Billington signed a Dec. 8 agreement to exchange materials documenting the Balkan wars and the culture of that region during the 1990s. Although the National Library of Serbia continued to send some materials to the Library of Congress under a then-existing exchange agreement, full documentation of the Balkan wars is only now becoming available. When the idea was first proposed by the Serbian side several years ago, Library staff realized that the Exchange Center 91-01 would be a valuable resource, not only for historians and scholars but also for the policy community, emigres and refugees from the Balkans, and others interested in the region.

This is Serbia Calling: Rock 'N' Roll Radio and Belgrade's Underground Resistance
There has been a clear tendency towards celebrating the myth of a supposedly vibrant protest culture within and outside Belgrade. This book might lend support to that position, although such is not its project. When Moslems are being massacred by the thousands down the road, however, it is difficult to credit pounding techno club cellars in Belgrade as an effective location for protest.

Yugoslavia urges U.N. Security Council to halt "cultural cleansing" and restrain terrorists in Kosovo and Metohija

    December 23, 1999
    Seventy-six orthodox churches destroyed
New York, Dec 23 (Tanjug) - Yugoslavia has called on the U.N. Security Council to take immediate steps to put an end to the destruction of Serbian cultural heritage and to vandalism by ethnic Albanian terrorists who are practicing "cultural cleansing" in its republic of Serbia's Kosovo and Metohija province. The call was voiced in a letter that head of Yugoslavia's U.N. mission Ambassador Vladislav Jovanovic submitted to Britain's U.N. ambassador Jeremy Greenstock and Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Wednesday, requesting that it be circulated as an official document in the Security Council. Following is the official translation of the letter: Since the arrival of the international presences in Kosovo and Metohija, the autonomous province of the Yugoslav constituent Republic of Serbia, this Serbian province has witnessed not only the loss of Serbian lives, but also a systematic destruction of the Serbian cultural heritage and the demolition of the churches, monasteries and other shrines of the Serbian Orthodox Church in areas in which the Serbian people has lived for centuries. This "cultural cleansing" is the most heinous crime of the eradication of historical and spiritual roots of a nation, an "ethnic cleansing" of the most hideous type. Regrettably, the destruction of cultural heritage may not be an altogether new phenomenon in the turbulent history of the Balkans; what is striking this time around, however, is that these atrocities have taken place under the auspices of the international community.
