Stand by Me
Introduction
Youth mentoring programs are in the limelight. Over two million young people have a Big Brother, a Big Sister, or a similar adult volunteer involved in their lives, and the numbers are rising at an unprecedented rate. Although mentoring initiatives in the United States date back to the turn of the century, nearly half of all programs were established in the past five years, and only 18 percent have been operating for more than fifteen years. And what we see today is just a beginning. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Americaprobably the best-known agency nationwidehas committed to doubling its size within five years, and other agencies have set similar goals. Unfortunately, that is often not the case. These recommendations are rarely based on scientific research that has undergone peer reviewnot out of any intent to ignore findings or deceive readers but simply because such rigorous studies are in short supply. And it's not surprising, given how rapidly the youth mentoring phenomenon has grown, that few researchers have had a chance to step back and ask howor, indeed, whetherthese interventions help boys and girls navigate the rough shoals of adolescence. Today, despite the "buzz" surrounding the topic of mentoring, many important questions about the effectiveness of mentoring relationships remain unasked and unanswered. To explain what we currently know and to point out areas where our knowledge is still inadequate are my primary reasons for writing this book.

For Immediate Release:
April 24, 2001 Susan Davis Honors Luis Natividad for Youth Mentoring

Natividad is the First Recipient of the Davis’s Mentor of the Month Award San Diego, CA - On Friday, April 20, Congresswoman Susan Davis awarded Luis Natividad a Congressional Proclamation honoring his work as a mentor in a ceremony at the Civic Center Plaza downtown. As the voting numbers and participation in public service by young people has declined, Natividad has been instrumental in getting hundreds of young members of the Latino community involved in community service and leadership activities through his work as founder and co-chair of the Latino Unity Coalition, and with other organizations. Natividad is the first recipient of the Davis’s coveted Mentor of the Month Award. “Luis has been tireless in his extensive commitment to community service and cultivating leaders in the Latino community,” said Davis. “In the time I have known Luis Natividad, he has served as a role model for people throughout San Diego. He certainly deserves recognition for his years of service to San Diego.” Natividad, who currently works for San Diego City Councilman George Stevens, is the founder and co-chair of the Latina/o Indigenous Coalition. He was Executive Director for the Chicano Federation of San Diego County from 1972 to 1974 and a former Mexican American Foundation Liaison to communities and businesses for the U.S and Mexico. He is the founder of Operation Warm Heart, Clothing and Blankets to Mexican Children.. Natividad is a charter member of the Spirit of the Barrio, which raises funds for the Community Health Center, and is also a member of the Bi-National Health Council Emergency Medical Committee.

Faith-Based Mentoring
click here to view this document en español Overview
The Arizona Department of Juvenile Corrections Youth Mentoring Program assists high risk youth to be successful as they transition back to their communities. It is a faith-based program that also includes community and secular mentor opportunities so that all youth have access to their individual preference. Partnerships with other established community mentoring programs include Prison Fellowship’s Angel Tree Mentoring, One-on-One Partners, Match Point, and Incarcerated Youth Outreach.
The goals of the ADJC Youth Mentoring Program are to provide high risk youth with a caring adult who can:
  • Participate in the youth’s transition planning.
Help youth prioritize and set goals. Be a friend and role model. Support and encourage youth. Assist the youth and their family with practical needs through faith and community contacts. Introduce youth to work experience opportunities through faith and community contacts.
