The National Mentoring Center is pleased to announce the release of Foundations of Successful Youth Mentoring: A Guidebook for Program Development . Intended for both new and established programs, the guidebook outlines the program components that mentoring programs of all shapes and sizes should have in place to build strong mentoring relationships and ensure program sustainability. Drawing from results of the national evaluation of Juvenile Mentoring Program (JUMP) grantees, a comprehensive review of youth mentoring research and literature, and the NMC's own experience as a technical assistance provider, the Foundations guide identifies 31 separate program elements across five broad categories of program design:
  • Strong agency capacity for service delivery
  • Effective program practices
  • Strong formal partnerships and informal collaborations
  • Sustainable resource development and funding, and
  • Useful program evaluation Research and observation has shown that programs that do not have this foundation for service delivery and program growth in place are at a greater risk for program failure and are less likely to meet program goals. The guidebook provides users with a discussion of each program component, self-assessment questions to help them think through each aspect of program design and implementation, and recommended resources that can assist in the planning and growth of the program. It is designed to cover all the key elements of running a program, while also being flexible enough for use across a wide variety of program models (community-based, school-based, faith-based, etc...).

Youth Mentoring by Mark Fulop Welcome to Youth Mentoring! In this section, you will find the following: Introduction Youth mentoring popularly claims mythical origins in Homer's Odyssey, where Odysseus asks his friend Mentor to look after his son Telemachus while he goes off to fight the Trojan War (Freedman, 1993). While there is some debate about whether or not the relationship between Mentor and Telemachus meets mentoring criteria, the inclination to date the concept of mentoring to 800 BC suggests that the mentoring relationship has long been part of our history. Historically, older generations have passed on wisdom to younger generations through oral histories, stories, ceremonies, rituals and apprenticeships. However, within the fragmented and fractured societies that exist in some of today's western nations, inter-generational connection and social bonds have weakened, and the organic drive to protect and nurture future generations has incrementally been losing its influence.

Jean E. Rhodes explores the experience of some different youth mentoring programs and concludes that not all approaches to mentoring are equal in impact.. She argues that mentoring programs are not a substitute for a caring family, community support, or a concerted youth policy agenda and that we should ensure that mentor programs are adequately implemented and evaluated, while broadening our efforts to strengthen the caring capacity of adolescents’ families, schools, and communities.

    Effectiveness of volunteer mentoring
Although these findings are encouraging, caution should be used in generalizing them to other mentoring programs. BBBS affiliates tend to carefully screen, train, and support their volunteers, and maintain a degree of quality control. In fact, most BBBS programs require a year’s commitment of their volunteers, to whom they provide at least six hours of training and ongoing supervision. Unfortunately, this level of training and support is not available in many of the mentoring programs that have emerged in recent years. In fact, a survey of more than 700 mentoring programs found that 36% of volunteers received less than two hours of training and 22% received none at all. Similarly, 20% of volunteers “almost never” talk to staff people in their programs and 9% have no contact with staff at all.

There has been a mushrooming of youth mentoring projects across the UK. Yet relatively little is known in the UK about the background to the idea and the principles underlying mentoring initiatives. Kate Philip investigates.
introduction the context the background what is mentoring? ... references Mentoring is now a key element within national and local strategies for working with young people, especially those who are regarded as ‘socially excluded’. As yet, few systematic evaluations of youth mentoring have taken place to enable comparisons to be made between projects and with other forms of youth intervention. It is important to critically analyze the concept and to highlight the distinctive elements of youth mentoring. In this short review we set out to do this by looking at how mentoring links into current preoccupations about young people, and by exploring how mentoring has been defined. We illustrate these points by drawing on findings from a recent study of natural mentoring processes carried out by the author and others.
The idea of mentoring holds great appeal - it conjures up a positive way of bridging boundaries between generations and harks back to notions of large extended families and friendly neighbourhoods within which young people and elders could establish common ground. Some of the literature from North America points to the absence of older guides for young people which is frequently attributed to the flight of the middle classes from inner city areas (Freedman, 1993). Unlike many other forms of youth intervention, it has grabbed the interest of an otherwise diverse group of politicians, policy makers, and practitioners from the public, private and voluntary sectors.
