Youth Advocacy Project: Milestones in the quest for justice The Youth Advocacy Project responds directly to the economic injustice and endemic racism in the criminal justice system and to inequalities in the way the political system allocates resources for young people. Its goal is to raise awareness of youth issues by involving neighborhood people directly, connecting with other organizations that are working on youth issues and holding law enforcement and political bodies accountable to the community for their actions around youth issues.
The Community Renewal Society has a long history of providing information, expertise, training and advice for faith-based youth groups, community organizations and church members about how to conduct activist work, especially around questions of social justice. In 2003, the role of our Youth Advocacy Project expanded beyond advising to acting.
Among its activities, the Youth Advocacy Project was instrumental in changing the juvenile justice sentencing laws in Illinois so that trial judges can now use their discretion in deciding whether to charge young people as adults or as minors.

Repositioning Family Planning for Youth: Advocacy to Action
On February 14, 2005, YouthNet in collaboration with other organizations hosted a workshop in Accra, Ghana, "Repositioning Family Planning for Youth: Advocacy to Action." It complemented the Repositioning Family Planning in West Africa Conference, held February 15-18, 2005. The conference aimed to increase commitment to repositioning family planning as a strategic objective of a country's health and development goals. The YouthNet workshop highlighted family planning and reproductive health issues faced by youth and prepared participants to serve as youth advocates during the conference and follow-up activities. Strong and consistent advocacy by youth champions and their supporters successfully gave the issue of youth prominent attention at the Conference, which acknowledged youth family planning (FP) as a critical element of repositioning within the West Africa sub-region. As a result, eight of the 15 country teams identified the FP needs of youth as a priority activity in their follow-up plans. YouthNet will continue to work with the country teams and other organizations to provide technical assistance in implementing these country follow-up plans.

JJPL What We Do Youth Prison Conditions Youth Advocacy Alternatives To Incarceration Youth Advocacy Photo by Nadine Batya Children are filling our juvenile courts every day without the support of a true advocate to help them and their families understand the system. Despite the fact the every child accused of a crime has a right to a defense attorney, young people across the state are finding themselves facing serious legal consequences without a dedicated juvenile defender to fight on their behalf. Not only are children and their families rarely aware of their legal rights, few public defenders have the time or resources to explain them, let alone adequately represent them.
A recent report entitled The Children Left Behind describes the numerous barriers to effective representation for delinquent youth in Louisiana, including crushing caseloads, lack of training and supervision, inadequate funding, high use of pleas and waiver, and an over-reliance on probation officers. In July 2002, the American Bar Association Juvenile Justice Center released The Children Left Behind Annual Update . The Annual Update was prepared in collaboration with the Juvenile Justice Project of Louisiana in order to update stakeholders on the status of juvenile defense since the publication of the original ABA assessment last June.
By fighting to keep young people out of the system and advocating for appropriate community-based interventions when necessary, zealous advocates ensure that children have the best opportunities for success, thereby strengthening both the communities where they live and the core values of the juvenile justice system. Without effective advocacy too many children are placed in prisons without any effective accountability interventions and with a high likelihood of repeating criminal behavior when they are released. More devastatingly, opportunities for personal growth and development are damaged when youth are locked away from their homes and families. JJPL recognizes the crucial role the juvenile defender plays in protecting children and ultimately, their communities. As such, JJPL represents juvenile clients in individual cases throughout the state through its

    Abstract
Youth Advocacy is a framework of action based on human rights principles when working with young people. Its principles and current outcomes clearly indicate that as well as preventing juvenile crime, it creates opportunities for young people to take responsibility in addressing life issues. Finlayson provides a brief outline of the structure and activities of the Victorian Youth Advocacy Network, before describing an example of an exciting initiative based on the concept of youth advocacy - the Flemington Youth Empowerment Project. Youth Advocacy Program has been providing community based substance abuse prevention and intervention services to Travis County youth and families since 1975. It began by providing intervention services to adolescents in the inner city areas populated primarily by people of color and focused on those youth abusing volatile substances, particularly spray paint. The plurality of them was Hispanic youth. Its main methods of service delivery were through street outreach and provided alternative activities, mentoring, counseling, educational and advocacy services. It evolved over the years to include more structured services and that were inclusive of the younger siblings and parents of the youth in the program. Its emphasis has always been to use educated and trained community people to provide services and prescribes to the philosophy of exhibiting "unconditional positive regard" toward clients. It has gained a reputation as an exceptionally culturally sensitive program and has become recognized as an indigenous support system for the target population.

Youth Advocacy today consists of two components. One provides substance abuse intervention services to a target population of at-risk youth 13-17 years old and their parents. It does this by using a curriculum that has been scientifically tested and found to produce the desired result of reducing and/or delaying the onset of drug use among the target population. This is known as the Creating Lasting Family Connections (CLFC) program. It is an 18-week educational and skills building program funded by TCADA with matching monies from the City of Austin and Travis County. We serve approximately 130-150 youth and parents in this program annually.
The Texas Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse, the City of Austin, and Travis County has consistently supported youth Advocacy since its inception in 1975. Few other grass roots organizations have enjoyed this kind of support for such a period of time. In 1996, it was deemed as an agency, which provided "critical services" to a high-risk population and was funded by Travis County as a sole source contract.

What children living in violent homes need: Role models - Children growing up in violent homes are not taught to use violence to solve problems. A role-model can teach the child how to non-violently and effectively resolve problems. They can also teach the child how to make better choices in their life. Family Support - Close family members such as brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, grandparents, etc., can be available for the child living in a violent home to talk to. They can help the child receive the help that he/she needs in order to stay safe. Community Support - Programs throughout the community can teach the child living in a violent home the skills they need to be non-violent and helps to build their self-esteem. Individual Therapy This type of therapy can help the child to build self-esteem, teach the child how to trust again and how to express his/her emotions in a healthy way. Group Therapy and Self-Help Groups This type of therapy enables the child to talk with others who are experiencing the same situations that they are.

The National Youth Advocacy Coalition takes a comprehensive approach to improving the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender youth. The Coalition strongly believes that to be effective in creating change at the National level, we must work with and support local community based work as well. The Coalition stresses that the expertise required to strengthen the LGBT youth services movement can be found among both youth and adults from around the country. NYAC recognizes the remarkable power, energy, and resiliency of LGBT young people, many of whom face additional discrimination based on race, class, and gender. We provide mechanisms for supporting young people to assume leadership roles on NYAC's Board of Directors, advisory committees, and in all our national and regional activities. At each of NYAC's five Regional Conferences and our Annual Summit, youth use their expertise to facilitate workshops and round table discussions.
