Resources Publications Partners ... News STUDENT ACTIVISM SUCCESS STORIES Student Activism Success Stories By Kari Kunst Updated March 2004 Hope is more than an imaginary, utopian dream of sometime, someday, faraway. Hope is a real, practical tool that informs, inspires, and motivates change throughout communities, especially schools. The following are "success stories" taken from student activist websites across the United States.
Youth Fighting for History - In 200 4 a student-led organization in Los Angeles called United Students, part of Youth Organizing Communities, recently won several concessions at Roosevelt High School. They include successfully changing policy to enforce the implementation of five Ethnic Studies classes, the addition of three more guidance counselors, and the elimination of a policy that required students to go to detention for being late during their class time.
Campus Youth Center - Youth Together organized to create a Youth Center on campus in 2001. The young people are currently involved in the hiring process for Youth Center staff. They are also meeting with Oakland school board members to gain long-term financial support for the Youth Center. They are now organizing for the development of a Health Clinic as part of the Youth Center.

Back to What's On Face to face with InterAction By their own accounts, it’s not often young African human rights activists are able to come together to share knowledge and experience about how they are working to change their worlds. Thanks to the British Council’s InterAction programme, youth from 19 African countries and the UK were able to do just that, gathering in South Africa to explore the feasibility of a British Council-linked network of community-based young people making a positive difference in communities throughout Africa. Delegates shared their experiences working for human rights, democracy and a better Africa in difficult, sometimes life-threatening situations. “I am motivated by the desire to see a better world,” said Tanzania’s Nancy Kaizilege, typifying the positive internationalist mood of delegates. ”And so I am working towards a modern, forward-looking relationship between Africa and the world based on trust, shared values and mutual interest.” Amaguru Olyana works with child soldiers in northern Uganda and was emphatic that Africa’s guns “must be silenced if young people are to have any future”. Delegates heard Tadese Okbagaber from Eritrea and Ynibeb Tessema from Ethiopia offer different experiences of the ongoing conflict between their countries – but agree on the fundamental need for peace. Delegates developed a framework for ongoing contact with each other and the UK via the British Council network, as well as an aspirant Vision for Africa they felt commonly characterised their work and commitment, including:

Youth storm the media
By Nell Geiser Reprinted with permission from Extra!, the magazine of FAIR Buffalo Soldier , a Youth Produced film Growing up in a media-saturated world, youth activists have learned that spectacle, direct action and creativity can generate news coverage. Media savvy youth are applying this knowledge and getting results. C-Beyond Critical Resistance Youth Force Communication Gap , a Youth Produced film
Escaping the box
Even with successes like these, youth activists have realized the limitations inherent in mainstream media. Exploited as consumers and framed as criminals, teens are stuck in a media-constructed box. Advertisers and the media that serve them have a vested interest in making sure kids feel that their main social role is participating in consumer culture. Youth rarely find themselves mirrored in the media as engaged, active citizens.

Youth Activist Kollege
Attention Amnesty International Students:
Get your YAKtivist groove on!
The Youth Activist Kollege is an annual summer event for up-and-coming Amnesty leaders. High school and college students from around the country are selected each year to attend a four-day human rights camp where they receive the essential skills and training needed to lead their Amnesty groups to a year of kickin' activism. This is a great opportunity to converge with youth activists from all walks of life to develop hands-on skills, including recruiting new activists, planning powerful events, advocating for human rights, and energizing and diversifying Amnesty's student movement. If this is something that interests you, check back next spring to apply for YAK 2006.

Millennial Politics is proud to bring you the 2004 Youth Activist New Year's Resolution. In line with our mission to educate and motivate people about our generation's activism, we encourage you to sign this New Year's Resolution. I want to be a part
of something that is
bigger than I am.
Join us in making a New Year's Resolution that makes a difference. There are a lot more important things to worry about than pledging to lose an extra five pounds or promising to run a mile every day. We are taking a pledge to make a difference in our communities, to stand up for what is right, and to never stop being outraged about the lack of justice in the world. We at Millennial Politics have outlined eight pledges for the New Year, and we would like you to take them with us. But this is more than just talk. This is more than just making yourself feel good about saying you are going to make a difference if you make these pledges with us we are going to hold you to them. Our mission at Millennial Politics is to educate and motivate our generation about youth activism. We could use your help. We welcome you to the cause.

hen Shayna Maxine Gelender was in preschool her teacher told her mother that she needed to play more, and not worry about the injustices of who's knocking over who's blocks. "Well, thankfully, I never have given up worrying about injustices, and my `playtime' still consists of battling for social equality," said 18 year old Shayna, one of seven recipients of the ACLU Youth Activist Scholarship. The award is given by the national ACLU to high school seniors for their outstanding contributions to the struggle for civil liberties. Now 18, Shayna has been working with the Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) of the American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California for two years. She is looking forward to a trip with other students that will explore the influence of corporations on government and the resulting erosion of individual rights. The trip is being sponsored by the Howard A. Friedman First Amendment Education Project of the ACLU-NC. The project provides unique resources to teachers and students about the Bill of Rights. Shayna will attend Mills College in Oakland in the fall. She plans to major in Political, Legal, and Economic Analysis and will continue her ACLU involvement. "Activism is a way of life for me. In whatever career I pursue in my adult life, I will always be an activist."

Advocacy Do's and Don'ts
For Youth Activists When you see something you don't like and you want to change it, what do you do? Successful activism depends on getting others involved through effective organizing strategies. How can you work with people-of any age -to move them from inaction to action, to get them involved in an issue you care about, and to create social change? Here's an example of an issue that might get youth motivated: Scenario: You are part of a group of youth who live in the same neighborhood. Every day as you and your friends walk to school, you notice the garbage and litter in the gutters, mostly consisting of empty alcohol containers and brown paper bags. Why is it always such a mess? You start paying attention to the neighborhood, and you realize that the litter is concentrated around two or three liquor stores you pass on the way to school. Upon further investigation, you learn that the liquor stores sell cheap, ready to drink, single containers of alcohol (40 oz bottles, 22 and 12 oz cans), in small, brown paper bags. Most of the people hanging out on the sidewalk are holding these paper bags. You and your friends conclude that the types of products sold in these stores are a major contributor to the dirty sidewalks and gutters. Interested in having a cleaner, safer neighborhood, your group wants to get the liquor stores to stop selling these single containers of alcohol.
