The Carter Center Guyana held a Youth Empowerment Forum Feb. 15 in Linden that was attended by more than 60 participants from Regions 10 and 4. The participants represented a wide array of youth organizations, secondary schools, and other entities focusing on youth issues, based in both rural and urban areas, ranging from Amerindian villages to the city of Georgetown. This was the first in a series of planned regional forums for youth to increase their participation in decision making and governance, to be more involved in volunteer activities, and to support development of future community leaders. Particular attention will be paid to the role and development of a national youth council in contributing to government policy. Participants from each regional forum will be selected for a September 2003 national youth forum. A key element of the forum's success was the realistic role-playing by the participants, demonstrating how volunteering benefits the community by improving volunteers' job skills and by injecting new energy and talent into the organizations and businesses who engage volunteers. Each participant was given a sourcebook of information to assist them in passing on their new knowledge to their communities and in carrying out follow-up activities agreed upon at the forum.

HOW OUR GARDEN GROWS: A PORTRAIT OF THE AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM AT ST. GABRIEL'S * Community Visions Project
The After School Program in Olney works with community organizations and artists to create an environment that addresses the multiple ways children and their families need support. This imaginative and entertaining video documents how art and music are essential ingredients of their "growing garden."
I USED TO TEACH ENGLISH
The location is an English class in a comprehensive, inner city public highschool in North Philadelphia. The scene is a student-centered, culturally diverse classroom, and the lesson is all about the impact the arts, specifically playwriting, can have on the education of young people. The video explores the transformation of a teacher and her students. Marsha Pincus, through her search for more effective ways to teach, becomes a classroom mentor who encourages students to listen and develop their own voices. Her students, who for the first time in their lives are invited to bring the whole range of their lives and culture into the classroom, explain how they have become articulate, persuasive and inspired to write plays.

Washington Youth Voice Directory INTRODUCTION According to the federal census taken in 2000, more than 25% of Washington State's residents are under 18 years old. How are young people included in decision-making across Washington's communities? In our work across the state, The Freechild Project has found young people and adults working statewide to make youth voice heard, respected, and acted on. Included here are many of the programs we've found that specifically promote youth voice. POINTS TO PONDER: While there is NO ONE "youth voice" in Washington State, or anywhere else, we use the term as a simple connection point - not as a simplistic negation of the diversity or uniqueness of different young peoples' voice. Do you find this true? RESOURCES: The following are programs and opportunities in Washington state where young people can become actively engaged in their communities. Each has its own attributes and challenges, and offers young people varying amounts of support and authenticity. These organizations are listed in NO PARTICULAR ORDER. For more information on any of these programs, go to their website or contact them directly.
