"Global Uprising is an exciting piece of contemporary history. It brings us the voices of some of the finest young people of this generation, accompanied by the commentaries of veteran activists and scholars. There are inspiring personal stories and thoughtful reflections on the tactics of direct action. For anyone despairing of the rule of money and power over human life, here is a testament to the spirit of resistance, a reason to hope." Howard Zinn

"transnational youth activism"
On Saturday, I attended a meeting on “transnational youth activism” in New York City. The classic “transnational activists” are opponents of corporate capitalism who also distrust all hierarchical, disciplined organizations (such as nation states and unions). They build SPINs—“segmented, polycentric, ideologically integrated networks”—that are united by common values rather than by centralized leadership, rules, or market relations. Their tools include the Internet and open-source software projects as well as face-to-face meetings, co-ops, squats, and community-supported agriculture projects. As a matter of strategy, they choose to work in loose networks rather than organizations so that “there is no head to cut off.” At the same time, they see networks as morally superior to organizations. We debated how far beyond the paradigm cases to go in conducting research. Should a research project be limited to the youthful left (mainly anarchists, pacifists, and radical Greens), who work internationally and adopt new social forms? Should the project also include various right-wing groups that are opposed to existing social institutions, that work internationally, and that form networks instead of top-down organizations? Should research on “transnational youth activism” even encompass various moderate young people who are perfectly happy with traditional institutions, such as the Catholic Church or UNESCO?

When Youth Protest: Student Activism and the Mississippi Civil Rights Movement, 1955-1970
by Martha Hutson
Clinton, MS

OVERVIEW
Given the opportunity, most students are eager to explore and to understand the Civil Rights movement in Mississippi. Their interest will certainly be aroused by an informative study of youth involvement in the movement, an area often overlooked in a cursory review of the primary leaders and events. Students will be engaged in thinking about the following questions as they research the subject: Why were young people interested in being a part of the Civil Rights movement? In what ways did young people participate in the movement? How important was non-violence to the cause? Was there a price to pay for being involved in the movement? What current issues of inequality can you identify?

In 1994, after the suspicious murder of Pakistani child laborer turned activist Iqbal Masih, the school children at the Broad Meadows Middle School in Quincy, MA decided to turn their anger into activism and vowed to keep Iqbal's dream alive of every child having an education.' The Broad Meadows students raised money for a school in Iqbal's memory in Pakistan, which opened in 1996, and went on to raise a total of $147,000 to build more schools. Today, ten years later, the students have co-founded Operation Day's Work-USA that encourages U.S.

Explosion of Youth Activism Around the Iraq War

Adam Waxman is a sophomore at Guilford College studying International Political Economy and Quaker Theology. He interned for Foreign Policy In Focus at the Institute for Policy Studies in the summer of 2004 and is an FPIF contributor (online at www.fpif.org ). Last fall he was elected president of the Guilford College Young Democrats. Currently he is working with the North Carolina Peace and Justice Coalition and the March 19 th Mobilization Committee at Guilford . A collection of his published writings can be found at www.domne.blogspot.com Foreign Policy In Focus www.fpif.org As goes Greensboro, so goes the nation. Student activism around Iraq is not new. Students played a key role in the peace movement prior to the invasion of Iraq , with the National Youth and Student Peace Coalition organizing a major student strike on March 5 of 2003. After the invasion, however, student activism seemed to drop off a bit. Organizations like the National Youth and Student Peace Coalition that had worked on the student strike got less press attention that they did before the war, even when compared to the attention that was given to other peace groups like United for Peace and Justice during the same period after the invasion. According to an article by Richard Moreno for Z Magazine

    Youth Activism in Policy

    By Kelly McCormick
As a student concerned about my local and global community, activism has been a part of my life since I was in junior high school. Throughout my path of activism, the most important moments to me have been the moments where I have been changed through my interactions with other people and what I have learned from them and taught them. These moments have occurred in many places, but most of all when I am working hard to make changes that other youth, adults and myself are passionate about. One of the most effective ways to make these changes occur in any system is to get to the root of the problem, which in most cases is the initial policy regarding the issue. Working alongside hundreds of youths, scores of adults, I have seen these policy changes birthed from small seedlings of ideas, nursed into reality, and finally taken out into the world to spread their benefits.
Most recently, I have been very active in promoting peace movements in my community and changing public school policy towards military recruitment on campus. I have quickly learned that political activism is much different than community activism people would much rather see a youth walking dogs from the Humane Society than walking with signs that air their political values. But youth excel in displaying their courage. Before every peace rally and march, campus protest and speech before the school board, I think of Adlai Stevenson's words: "The sound of tireless voices is the price we pay for the right to hear the music of our own opinions."

The notion of youth activism as an entity will be studied in this program, and how it changes with place and time. What is activism? It will examine political, social, and environmental kinds of activist programs; what are limitations in different cultures? What kinds of activities have participants done, and how would they be characterized? You will discuss issues you believe can be addressed in your home countries, concentrating on clarity of purpose, difficulty of task, number of people necessary to accomplish the task, difficulty to convince people, specific jobs to be done. The teachers will each work with one of the groups of students to help them formulate their issues and lead the discussions. After the field trips, they will debrief the students, helping them assess what they have learned and helping them translate the applications to their countries.

Rumson-Fair Haven HS Club President Wins $4000 ACLU Youth Activist Award
The American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey is proud to announce that Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School senior Annie Preziosi has won a $4000 ACLU Youth Activist Scholarship. Annie is one of twelve students nationwide recognized by the ACLU for her youth activism. The ACLU Scholarship for Youth Activists was established by an anonymous donor in 2000. Winners are selected based on their outstanding contributions to the struggle for civil liberties through activities such as playing a leadership role in establishing a student civil liberties club or group, grassroots organizing around a particular ACLU issue, or serving as a plaintiff in an ACLU lawsuit. As a high school junior, Annie noticed that students spent a lot of time debating social issues in her United States History class. They talked about whether McKinley was a good president, whether the US should have been involved with the Korean and Vietnam wars, and about what individuals' rights should be when it comes to issues like abortion, the death penalty, affirmative action, and more. Annie noted her own passion on such topics, as well as that of her classmates, and decided to study a constitutional issue for her Academic Passport Project, an independent research program in which students examine a topic, write a paper and present their work. Annie choose the write about the Establishment Clause and researched two cases from the previous Supreme Court term:
