One quarter of the population in the U.S. is under the age of 18. That's who participate in school and community activities
who spend more than $170 billion a year
and who care about the world in which they live.
However, that's also
of the population who cannot vote
and who are supposed to be seen and not heard
making for a resounding of the future
who have not been encouraged to exercise leadership today. Shouldn't young people have a voice in issues that directly concern them? Youth no longer have to be shut out. More adults recognize that the long tradition of making decisions for youth without youth has failed.Getting the powers-that-be to take seriously the ideas and solutions offered by the next generation is not as difficult as you might expect. Youth Activism is your youth advocate resource center This site aims to prove that MINORS can play a MAJOR ROLE. Our national clearinghouse also provides help and information to parents, mentors, teachers, principals, policy-makers and other adult allies who want to collaborate with youth to achieve positive community change

Funding for Social Change By and With Young People INTRODUCTION: The Freechild Project believes that y oung people are seeking to make change in their communities around the world right now , and are often left lurching about for money to fund their action. A growing number of funders are realizing that young people are not simply "the future." They realize that young activists are making significant and meaningful change in their communities today. Included here is a long list of those organizations, created to make funding money for action easier for young people to obtain. POINTS TO PONDER: The Japanese have a word - mottainai - which can be defined as "A regrettable situation in which something is wasted without its value being fully utilized." Funding young people engaged in social change directly challenges mottainai , encouraging action in our communities today, and ensuring empowerment and change tomorrow. There was a t-shirt that said "Youth can be the leaders of tomorrow - if we procrastinate. What are

Student Activism
Historically, young people have been at the frontlines of the human rights movement. In 1989, students stood in front of armored tanks in Tiananmen Square. In 1960, African American students sat at "white only" lunch counters in Greensboro, North Carolina. Where there has been a call to action, to stand up and speak out, young people have been there, leading the fight for social justice. Getting involved with Amnesty International is one way to join that fight. Learn more about global issues and educate others about human rights!

Youth Activism Brings Meaning to My Life
By Ritu, Youth Activist, Peer Advisor, and Volunteer Why am I a youth activist? Because my cultural background forced me to be. Growing up as a first generation South Asian woman, I noticed that other South Asian women suffered from a chronic problem known as misinformation. Young women were victims of an unrealistic double standard and grew up sheltered from reality, especially when it came to sexuality.
There are many taboos surrounding sexuality in my culture. Speaking of sexuality is not allowed. When a loved one is lost to HIV/AIDS, not speaking about it brings grief. And, it hurts especially to know such a death could have been prevented with education. This has been my inspiration for becoming a youth activist. Young people are the future, and people under age 22 are the first generation to spend their entire lives worrying about or confronted with HIV/AIDS. Why would we want to risk our lives through ignorance?
Through my experiences working as a peer advisor for a woman's shelter and as a volunteer at a women's center, I have learned a great deal. I am lucky to have the knowledge I do and the opportunity to seek out more knowledge and experience.

Conclusion OneWorld US Special Report Youth Activism and Global Engagement: Part I This OneWorld US Special Report focuses on the intersection of activism among young people on college campuses and global issues. It represents excerpts from a longer report prepared for the Global Interdependence Initiative by Paul G. Aaron, with the purpose of identifying areas in which young activists and adults engaged in work on global issues might work together. The report will be published here in ten segments. Though anecdotal and fragmentary, evidence suggests an increasing interface between American youth activism and global engagement. Young people are playing important roles in a number of campaigns where international and domestic problems (and their solutions) overlap. Such campaigns include efforts to:
  • Reform and democratize institutions of global capital Ban landmines Stop sweatshops and press for labor rights Mobilize against draconian drug laws and the onslaught of the "prison-industrial complex" (and to link these domestic phenomena to worldwide patterns of social and racial exclusion)

Youth Activism in Armenia / Eleonora Manandyan
To my surprise, Eleonora Manandyan has just been interviewed on ArmNews. This was unexpected because she usually gets prevented from speaking about politics on TV. Instead, she is sometimes allowed to talk about her New Armenia organization but this evening she was talking about youth. In particular, she criticized the Baze Pan Armenian Youth Assembly which, like many other people, she considers to be part of a government policy to keep youth inactive and apathetic so as to prevent the emergence of a genuine student movement in Armenia. New Internationalist magazine to interview her they made her one of the activists in the post-soviet world For example, when the police The quotes above are from an interview I conducted with Eleonora at the end of 2004. The interview is online here the abuse of state funds designated for supporting youth in Armenia. “We decided to find out where the money goes, which the government in the form of a grant through a special decision had to allot to the youth, their issues and organizations that deal with those issues,” says Manandyan. After two and a half months of trying to get information from the Ministry of Culture and Youth Issues, it took a threat of legal action to finally get answers.
