Fears about the new biotechnology generated world permeate new young adult literature. As Ostry writes, the linkage between human being and machine is always called into question. Inevitably, the question arises: Are we developing a race of super humans? There is a striking example of genetics creating a class system of super humans in The Last Book in the Universe by Rodman Philbrick. In this provocative read, the world is divided into "normals" and "proovs" The proovs are genetically improved people, who live in Eden, the only place where blue sky and green grass are found. The normals live in the Urbs, concrete jungles of violence and poverty. The narrator, Spaz, is even less than a normal; as an epileptic, he is a "Deef," or defective. Philbrick's work is the inevitable conflict that arises when two human beings compete for superior status. In the end, no one wins.

68. Module 2: Teaching Young Adult Literature In The Classroom
The definition we use for young adult literature is simple Books written for young Several authors have emerged as authors in the young adult field.

Building a Background
for Understanding Young Adult Literature History of Young Adult Publishing
The definition we use for young adult literature is simple: "Books written for young adults and about young adults." With young adults being defined as a young person between the ages of 12 and 18. These books would be those marketed to a market in that age range and written about characters that are within that age range. This precludes those books written for adults (but sometimes read by young adults) or those books assigned by school personnel but considered in the classic realm. Young adults do read other materials and we will briefly discuss those types of materials. There are adult books that will be enjoyed by young adult readers just as there are picture books with implications for use with young adults. These books are in the category of books being read by young adults but that fact, in and of itself, does not make those adult books or the picture books part of the category of young adult literature. Never-the-less those books shall be considered in the broad survey of literature (and other media) to be used with young adult readers.

Some are maintained by publishers and feature such elements as plot synopses, teaching guides, and sample chapters. Others provide reviews of new and classic novels for young adults and are designed to give readers direction in choosing material that matches their interests. Still other sites are devoted to the study of YA literature as a genre and as a teaching tool. What follows is an annotated list intended to provide a representative sample of the sorts of resources in YA literature that are available on the WWW. Included are on-line versions of traditional print resources along with sites maintained by commercial organizations, educational institutions, and individuals. The list is presented in simple alphabetical order by site name.
