Young Adult Literature
The University of Texas at Austin I suggest that the only books that influence us are those for which we are ready, and which have gone a little farther down our particular path than we have yet gone ourselves. E.M. Forster There is no reason why the same man should like the same books at eighteen and forty-eight. Ezra Pound Course Description: Young Adult Literature (YAL) is a nebulous category overlapping many boundaries of genre and theme. Titles ranging from Seventeen magazine to theDune series can share space on a bookshelf labeled Young Adult. The genre includes books written specifically for an adolescent audience (S.E. Hinton's The Outsiders or Ntozake Shange's Betsey Brown) as well as others written for an adult audience but appropriated by young people as part of their self-selected canon (Judith Guest's Ordinary People or Anthony Burgess' A Clockwork Orange). The definition of young adult literature then, is not determined by the text per se, but by the audience; a young adult book is one that adolescents choose to read without coercion. In this undergraduate course students will survey a variety of young adult titles in order to trace the history of the genre and examine current developments. However, the nature of our subject requires that we move beyond the limits of a traditional survey course and center our study on the reader as well as the text. A reader-based approach to the literature, informed by the unique developmental needs of adolescents, will serve as the theoretical framework of our inquiry. Social and cultural reader-response theories will be emphasized as we consider strategies to encourage critical literacy, and practical issues of pedagogy will be addressed throughout the course.

"Women's history is the primary tool of women's emancipation." - Gerda Lerner
There has been an increase in more lengthy and more theoretically based critical analyses of works for children and young people, but too often this work is assumed to be esoteric, isolated from and unrelated to either children or the teaching of children's literature. Many who teach children's literature dismiss this work as being that of those who have little sense of the child for whom the literature was created and even less for the practical problems of bringing that child and the literature together. On the other hand, there has been a proliferation of books about children's literature that describe both literary works and activities with these books but have little relation to theory, research, or even the practical problem's of one's own teaching. We are interested in what our colleagues do, but we are more interested in

Literature for Children and Young Adults
    E XAMINING ISSUES OF VIOLENCE
    AND CONFLICT RESOLUTION
by Alita Zurav Letwin This annotated bibliography is designed to tap the rich resource of children’s literature to stimulate discussion of violence and of alternative, peaceful ways to resolve conflict. Its focus is on books appropriate for upper elementary and middle school students, though a number of books can be used in the early elementary grades as well. These books are chosen with a number of criteria in mind. The most important is that issues of violent and nonviolent conflict resolution are clearly presented so that students can examine the following general questions:
    • What is conflict?
    • What is violence?
    • What are some causes of violence?
    • What are some consequences of violence?
    • What alternatives to violence can be used when conflicts need to be settled?
    • How can we prevent violence?
Literature is particularly helpful in discussing such issues, not only by describing conflicts, but also by indicating why the conflict occurred and what followed in its aftermath.  A novel or short story might show the anger that led to violence, and the fear, unhappiness, hurt, and despair that violence can leave in its wake. Because literature is often dramatic, it can strike an emotional chord that holds student interest while it broadens perspective and heightens awareness of one’s own and other’s feelings and beliefs. Using literature for this purpose can, in turn, awaken an interest in literature itself.  Therefore the second criterion used in choosing these books is that they model the qualities of “good” literature: the author should use language beautifully, develop sensitive, believable characterizations and use involving, well-crafted plots.  There are many books that are written for young people that raise the issues of this bibliography; there are few that have literary value as well.  Not all the books included here achieve the same literary heights, but none are mediocre.
