Yemen History
Ancient civilisations
The history of Yemen stretches back over 3,000 years, and its unique culture is still in evidence today in the architecture of its towns and villages. From about 1000 BC this region of the Southern Arabian Peninsula was ruled by three successive civilisations Minean, Sabaean and Himyarite. These three kingdoms all depended for their wealth on the spice trade. Aromatics such as myrrh and frankincense were greatly prized in the ancient civilised world and were used as part of various rituals in many cultures, including Egyptian, Greek and Roman. In the 11th century BC, land routes through Arabia were greatly improved by using the camel as a beast of burden, and frankincense was carried from its production centre at Qana (now known as Bir 'Ali) to Gaza in Egypt. The camel caravans also carried gold and other precious goods which arrived in Qana by sea from India. The chief incense traders were the Minaeans, who established their capital at Karna (now known as Sadah), before they were superseded by the Sabaeans in 950 BC. The Sabaean capital was Ma'rib, where a large temple was built. The mighty Sabaean civilisation endured for about 14 centuries and was based not only on the spice trade, but also on agriculture. The impressive dam, built at Ma'rib in the 8th century, provided irrigation for farmland and stood for over a millennium. Some Sabaean carved inscriptions from this period are still extant.

Handbook History On May 22, 1990, Yemen was unified and a draft constitution was approved in May of 1991. This was the latest historical event in the long history of this fascinating country located on the southwest corner of the Arabian Peninsula. Sana'a, the capital, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Throughout the Yemen, Stone Age people left evidence of their occupation from 400,000BC. Bronze Age people from 2000BC had developed many agricultural settlements throughout the area. Foremost of these was near Marib where a huge dam was built to irrigate the terraced fields found here. The Marib Dam is considered the greatest technical structure of antiquity. You may see some of the ruins of this structure which collapsed around 600AD and which is nearby to a new dam serving the same purpose today. The Yemenis consider themselves the original Arabs from whom all the other Arabs are descended. Indeed there seems to be evidence of this. In ancient Yemen, also called Southern Arabia, there were five principal kingdoms: the Saba, Hadramawt, Ausan, Qataban and Main. Saba was the oldest, most important and most powerful. Saba in Hebrew is "Sheba". Thus the fabled Queen of Sheba came from Saba. Queens in Arabia were common, and both the Bible and Quran refer to the Queen of Sheba.

In present-day Yemen exists between 1100 and 115 BC Minean Kingdom of Saba . This state is continued by the Himyarites between 115 BC and 525. In that year Ethiopians conquer the area, followed in 575 by the Persians The area is conquered by the Arab Caliphate in 634. In the ninth century Yemen becomes a seperate Arab state under the dinasty of the Rassides. Since 1517 the area is under control of the Ottoman Empire . In 1597 the Qasimi State is established as a Ottoman protectorate, but since 1733 Qasimi is independent again. Southern parts a conquered by the United Kingdom in 1839, the colony of Aden is established. In 1872 Qasimi is occupied and later incorporated into the Ottoman Empire The Imamate of Yemen secedes from the Ottoman Empire in 1918 and renamed Mutawakkilite Kingdom of Yemen in 1926. It is ruled by Yahya ibn Muhammad until 1948. Imam Yahya dies during an unsuccessful coup attempt in 1948 and is succeeded by his son Ahmad, who rules until his death in 1962. Imam Ahmad's reign is marked by growing repression, renewed friction with the United Kingdom over the British presence in the south and growing pressures to support the Arab nationalist objectives of Egyptian President Gamal Abdul Nasser. Shortly after assuming power in 1962, Ahmad's son, Badr, is deposed by revolutionary forces which took control of Sanaa and create the Yemen Arab Republicwith Abdallah al Sallal as president. The royalist government remains in rebellion against the republican government until 1967. In 1967 the republican governments defeats the royalists. Abdul Rahman al-Iryani becomes the new president until 1974, when he is succeeded by Ibrahim Muhammad al-Hamdi until 1977. After two interim-presidents, Ali Abdullah Salih becomes president in 1978.

A view of the mountain in Yemen Prehistoric tools and settlements have been found in various places in Yemen. Archaeologists recently discovered that irrigation in the Marib oasis dates back at least 5 millennia . The ancient South Arabian Kingdoms which started out as theocracies, all developed in the mouths of large wadis between the mountains and the great desert . The kingdom of Saba with its capital at Marib was the most powerful, at times dominating all of the South Arabia . The great Marib Dam, built to harness and exploit the seasonal floods by means of an elaborate irrigation system , provided sustenance for some 30,000 inhabitants and was counted among the wonders of the ancient world. The Sabaeans were not only great builders and technicians, but also successful traders .
Islamic History
Queen Arwa bint Ahmed (Second Queen of Sheba) , well remembered and still loved today, ruled the whole Yemen from her small town in Jiblah for over 60 years until her death at the age of 92. Taiz became a capital in 1174 under Turan Shah al-Ayyubi the brother of the famous Salah Addin who fought Richard the Lionheart in Palestine . It was the centre of a splendid Sultanate, under the Rasulid dynasty from 1229 - 1454, a period of great wealth and building activity . The Zaydi dynasty of Saada lasted longest and was overthrown with the last Imam in 1962. Founded in 897 by Al-Hadi Yahia , a descendant of the prophet, their Shiite teaching of Islam is still adhered to by most of the northern tribes of Yemen.

Ancient History
The Yemenite Jews have a unique history that distinguish them from Jews in other countries in the Arab world. The way they migrated to Yemen is different. The relationship they had to the Arab rulers and the Arab populous was different. Also the Jewish culture that developed in Yemen is very different from any other Jewish community in the world. We do not know exactly how Jews came to settle in Yemen. According to Yemenite tradition, a group of well-to-do Jews left Jerusalem after they heard Jeremiah predict the destruction of the Temple in 629 BCE, 42 years before the destruction occurred. Historians believe that King Solomon's trading and naval networks brought Jews to Yemen from Judea around 900 BCE . The first evidence of Jewish presence in Yemen can be traced to the 3rd century CE In the early part of Jewish settlement, the Jewish presence in Yemen was very strong. The Himyaties who ruled at this time had a large number of people who converted to Judaism. Sometime after the 3rd century, the Himyarite ruling family converted to

E-Mail YEMEN One of the best kept secrets of the Middle East At the crossroads of spice and incense routes, Yemen is one of the oldest continuously inhabited regions in the world that has not touched the winds of modernity with its colorful history that dates back to primeval times. Yet Yemen remains a medieval land and modernist fantasy to be discovered. This fascinating country stretching from the shores of the Red Sea to beyond the shores of the Arabian Sea is extraordinarily rich in historical sites. These ancient sites are refreshingly free of commercial ventures with an atmosphere of uncluttered authenticity no longer present at better-trodden historical locations. A trip to Yemen is considered an experience of a way of life long since lost to the modern world, a dream destination of unusual record, a very rich mixture of archaeological, cultural, traditional arts, natural and historical heritage, a picture of a different age:

Hardcover $59.00. This comprehensive history of twentieth-century Yemen traces Yemeni development since Imam Yahya and his dealings with both the Turks and the British. Yahya's son, Badr, consolidated power in the North while the British controlled Aden and the rest of the South. The book deals with social development in the context of the political economy of both North and South Yemen and contrasts the old politics with the new (political parties, labor unions, and nationalism). The author shows the centrality of Egypt's military intervention in Yemen to regional politics and interprets Northern politics since Egypt's involvement primarily as a split between soldiers (pro-Egypt) and other political actors. In his view, therefore, the political fault line was not between extreme and moderate republicans, left or right or even social classes.

This research is a reconstruction of the past vegetation of Yemen using fossil deposits left in caves and crevices by a small mammal called the rock hyrax. This is part of a series of interrelated projects in archaeology, geology and paleoecology that are studying the history of an area in the remote Hadramawt region of Yemen, on the southern tip of the Arabian Peninsula. This research is coordinated through the Roots of Agriculture in Southern Arabia (RASA) program, headed by Dr. Joy McCorriston, the Yemeni Ministry of Antiquties, and the American Institute for Yemeni Studies . Funding for this portion of the project is primarily from the U.S. National Science Foundation While other investigators are concentrating on the abundant archaeological or geological deposits, the role of the USGS researcher, Dr. Kenneth Cole, is to reconstruct the past vegetation and climate of the area. Plant fossils have been found in the abundant middens left in the steep limestone cliffs by rock hyraxes (
