History of Yemen
History of Yemen . This is a short but well written overview to the history of this Asian nation in the Middle East.
From the site:
Yemen was one of the oldest centers of civilization in the Near East. Between the 12th century BC and the 6th century AD, it was part of the Minaean, Sabaean, and Himyarite kingdoms, which controlled the lucrative spice trade, and later came under Ethiopian and Persian rule. In the 7th century, Islamic caliphs began to exert control over the area. After this caliphate broke up, the former north Yemen came under control of Imams of various dynasties usually of the Zaidi sect, who established a theocratic political structure that survived until modern times. (Imam is a religious term. The Shiites apply it to the prophet Muhammad's son-in-law Ali, his sons Hasan and Hussein, and subsequent lineal descendants, whom they consider to have been divinely ordained unclassified successors of the prophet.)

Ancient Kingdoms Islam in Yemen Between the eighth and the fourteenth century Yemen was ruled by a series of dynasties. In the mid fifteenth century the mamelukes of Egypt lost power to the Ottomans ( Turks ) . During this period the town of al Moka on the Red sea coast , became the most important coffee port in the world. By the 19th century the British expressed growing interest in the region and had signed series of treaties which was to be known as the south Arabian Protectorate of Great Britain. The Imamate and Modern Yemen After the retreat of the Turks from Yemen in 1918 Imam Yahya ( a Zaidi Imam ) established the Kingdom of Yemen. He was succeeded by his eldest son Imam Ahmed who stayed in power until his death in September 1962 . He was briefly succeeded by his son Crown Prince Mohammed al - Badr who was overthrown by a regime of revolutionaries. The new regime founded the Yemen Arab Republic.

Yemen - History
The Imam Ahmad died in September 1962 and was succeeded by his son, Muhammad. Less than a week later, army officers, led by Col (later Marshal) Abdullah as-Sallal, removed the Imam and proclaimed the Yemen Arab Republic.
Civil war ensued between royalist forces, supported by Saudi Arabia, and republicans, aided by Egyptian troops. The republicans gained the upper hand and Egyptian forces withdrew in 1967. In November President Sallal was deposed by a Republican Council.
A cease-fire was arranged in the same month, under the auspices of the Arab League , and soon afterwards both sides agreed to the union of the two Yemens within 18 months. The union was not, however, implemented.
Later in the same month, however, at a meeting between the North and South Yemen Reads of State in Kuwait, arranged by the Arab League, an agreement was signed pledging unification of the two states.
The Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in August 1990 proved problematic for the Government of Yemen, as the economy was heavily dependent on trade with, and aid from Iraq, and also on aid from Saudi Arabia, which was host to a considerable number of Yemeni expatriate workers.
In December 1990 Yemen assumed the chair of the UN Security Council (which rotates on a monthly basis), and the Government increased its efforts to mediate in the Gulf crisis.

Contact us Book review A History of Modern Yemen by Paul Dresch Cambridge University Press, Having thoroughly enjoyed Dr Dresch’s previous, primarily anthropological book, Tribes, Government and History in Yemen (1989), I expected good things of his work on the modern country. I was not disappointed. This is an attractive and readable publication, with photographs, maps and other useful illustrations. Above all, it is well written and as appealing to the general reader as to the specialist academic. In some ways it could be described as an updated version of Robin Bidwell’s The Two Yemens (1983), but presentationally, organisationally and stylistically, I prefer Paul Dresch’s approach. Perhaps the most valuable feature of this excellent volume is Dresch’s account of the post-colonial period - especially when he carries on from where Bidwell stopped and explains how the two Yemens, neo-Marxist in the south, inherently conservative in the north (despite years of ‘republicanism’), finally merged. As a young political officer in the 1960s, I would have wagered my entire (albeit modest) gratuity against unity in my lifetime, dismissing the prospect as a chimera induced by fleeting anti-colonial sentiment rather than anything more substantial and enduring. The post-imperial road to scenes of crowds chanting on both sides of the former border: ‘ba’d al yawm ma’ad baramil’ (‘after today no more barrels’ i. e. concrete ftlled drums marking the frontier checkpoints) was a rocky one.

History Taking A good doctor would always take the history first and then examine the patient. Since in case of Arab patients, there is a language problem, there is tendency to omit history and examine the patient straightaway. The general feeling amongst the doctors is that very little can be missed in these days with availability of modern imaging investigations and multiple blood tests like SMA-12/60 by auto-analysers. I shall quote a few examples of Arab patients seen in my clinic, where the main diagnosis was missed elsewhere because of reliability on machines!
  • A few Bahrainis (non-English speaking) in whom " Angina Pectoris " was missed because the resting electrocardiogram was normal which as we all know is the case in over sixty percent of such patients. Stress test was not asked for, because history was not elicited properly. Bronchial Asthma and allergic bronchitis were missed because X-ray chest was normal.

This agreement, called the Taif Treaty, delineated their common border, though disputes have flared up over the years. Apparently, the official reasons for this current round of border fighting relates to disputes over who owns certain islands in the Red Sea. However, it is also known that the monarchist Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is rather uncomfortable with Yemen's experiment with democracy (Yemen is the only nation on the Arabian Peninsula with a democratic style government). Allegations have been made that Saudi Arabia is attempting to sabotage this democratic regime through military intimidation as well as aiding internal strife within Yemen. (See

Due to the economy, President Saleh's government ended subsidies on flour and wheat and increased fuel prices by at least 40 percent. These actions provoked demonstrations in the cities, and violence in the tribal-dominated countryside. It has been alleged that Yemen's northern neighbor, Saudi Arabia has been encouraging the unrest in an attempt to weaken or topple the democratic system now in place in Yemen. This has not been proven, though the two countries are currently engaged in a violent border dispute. DESCRIPTION OF CONFLICT: At this point, (7-29-98) not many details are available. though government troops and helicopter gunships have been sent into the mountainous countryside to crush the unrest. On July 21, gunmen ambushed a convoy containing the Interior Minister and other officials, causing several casualties including a provincial governor who suffered gunshot wounds.

Sana'a - H istory A ccording to popular legend Sana'a was founded by Shem, son of Noah. The story tells of how Shem after coming a long way from the north, finally reached Yemen and found the plain of Sana'a most suitable for settlement. Shem chose originally the western part of the Sana'a plain close to Mount Aiban. When he began to lay the foundations a bird came and picked up his sounding lead. Shem followed the bird convinced that it was sent by Allah to show him a more suitable place. The bird flew to the eastern part of the Sana'a plain and dropped the lead at the foot of Mount Nugum. Shem then laid the foundations for a city that was called "Madinat Sam" (the city of Shem). Later, the name changed to Azal (from the biblical Uzal -Gen. 10:27 - the sixth son of Joktan, the Arabic Qahtan). Finally, it was called Sana'a, meaning "the fortified one", in ancient inscription. The first inscriptions referring to Sana'a as a city date back to the first century AD. Yet Sana'a, as a citadel along the trade route between Aden and Mecca, watching over a large seasonal market, is certainly older than that. Mohammed Al-Hamdani, the 10

Yemen Coast - H istory Islam was introduced into the region in about AD630 and the Yemen was ruled by a series of Arab caliphs. The first mosques to be built in the Yemen were in San'a al-Janad and near Wadi Zabid. These mosques are still standing. Later in the seventh century the Ummayyad and Abbasid caliphs moved their capital first to Damascus and later to Baghdad, thus diminishing Yemen's political status in the new Islamic Empire. A succession of governors of the region followed, with a number of dynasties struggling for supremacy. These dynasties included the Ziyadids, the Najahids, the Sulayhids, Egyptian Ayyuhids and the Turkoman Rasulids. The most important dynasty, founded in AD897 by Yayha bin Husayn bin Qasim ar-Rassi, were the Zaydis of Sa'da. This stable, Shiite dynasty lasted well into the 20th century. The coastal area has a primarily dry and hot climate with an annual rainfall of about 9 inches (229mm). The region is prone to severe sandstorms and maximum daytime temperatures ranging from 32° C in winter to over 40° C in summer. The region was once rich in fawna and flora, but is virtually non-existent due to hunting and the effects of agricultural use of the arable land available. Al-Mukalla is a seaport and fishing centre in the southern part of the Hadhramawt province, and was founded in 1035A.D. as a fishing village. The beautiful white buildings in the old town are of interest to visitors and there are several impressive mosques, notably ar-Rawdha and the Mosque of 'Umar. Outside the town a small fortress, Husn al-Ghuwayzi, can be seen on the summit of a cliff.
