adsonar_pid=3019;adsonar_ps=370666;adsonar_zw=540;adsonar_zh=220;adsonar_jv='ads.adsonar.com'; To the Romans, Yemen was Arabia Felix , whose mountains and fertile areas distinguished it from the barren desert of the rest of the Arabian peninsula. After the fall of the Roman Empire, Yemen came into the seventh century under the influence of Islam, which was then rapidly expanding throughout the region. It remained within the orbit of various regional powers until, in the 15th century, it became a flashpoint in the struggle between the Egyptians and the Ottoman Empire. Its strategic location subsequently attracted European powers and, during the early 17th and early 19th centuries, there was a constant struggle for control between the Europeans and the Ottomans. The development of trade routes to India and the Far East eventually made protection of the Suez sea route an imperative for the British, who occupied the port of Aden in 1839 as a staging post and military base. The Yemeni hinterland was, for the most part, under the loose control of the Ottoman Empire throughout the 19th century, until 1918, when the Imam Yahya took power in what became the Yemen Arab Republic (YAR). Aden and its surroundings, meanwhile, were firmly established as a British colony. Yahya was assassinated in 1948 and his son Ahmed took over. From 1958-1961, the YAR was federated with Egypt and Syria in the United Arab States. Ahmed died in 1962 and an army coup led to civil war between Egypt-backed republicans and Saudi-backed royalists.

The Jews of Yemen: History, Culture, Society Credits: 6 advanced credits in Modern History of the Jewish People or in Middle Eastern Studies Prerequisites : 36 credits, including Jews in an Era of Transition or Introduction to the Modern History of the Middle East . Students must also fulfill all English requirements. Authors : Dr. Bat-Zion Klorman-Eraqi , Prof. Yosef Tobi , Dr. Yaron Tsur , Ran Segev Jews lived in Yemen at least from the 2nd century until the mid-20th century, when most emigrated to Israel. The course focuses on major aspects of Yemeni society, both Jewish and Muslim, especially during the 19th and 20th centuries. It examines the political, economic and cultural aspects of life of the Jewish community within a society that was not directly influenced by western colonialism. From this point of view, the Jewish community in Yemen differed from Jewish communities in other Muslim countries. The course deals with the unique culture of Yemeni Jews which preserved ancient Jewish cultural values, embraced various characteristics of the Muslim environment, and was consistent with leading trends in Jewish thought and literature which reached them from other Jewish centers. The wave of emigration to Palestine, which began at the end of the 19th century and reached its peak after the establishment of the State of Israel, is examined against the background of worldwide political changes of the period and Yemen’s changing economic and social reality. T he Republic of Yemen, at the south-west corner of the Arabian Peninsula, has traded by land and sea since ancient times. Mid-way between Europe and the Far East, Aden lies on a major world trading route through the Suez Canal. It is one of the largest natural harbours in the world with an area of about 70 km2 of sheltered water surrounded by Jebel Shamsan, Khormaksar, and the shore which extends to the hills of Little Aden. The Port of Aden consists of the Inner Harbour, the Oil Harbour serving Aden Refinery and the anchorage and approach channels of he Outer harbour. T he City of Aden draws its vitality from the Port of Aden. The story of Aden as a trading centre stretches back over 3000 years. Marco Polo and Ibn Batuta visited it in the 11th and 12th Centuries. In the 1800's, Aden grew as ship fuelling port, holding stocks of coal and water supplies for the early steamers. Port services expanded after the Suez Canal opened in 1869 as Aden grew to become one of the busiest ship bunkering and tax-free-shopping and trading ports in the world by the 1950's. Barges took cargo between ships berthed in the Inner Harbour and the wharves. Coastal vessels and dhows carried cargoes to and from regional ports.

Middle East Yemen History
Yemen, History
Because of their prominence and prosperity, the states and societies of ancient Yemen were collectively called Arabia Felix in Latin, meaning “Happy Arabia.” However, when the Romans occupied Egypt in the 1st century bc they made the Red Sea their primary avenue of commerce . With the decline of the caravan routes, the kingdoms of southern Arabia lost much of their wealth and fell into obscurity. Red Sea traffic sailed past Yemen, and what seaborne commerce Yemen engaged in had little impact on the country’s interior. The Tihamah region, which was hot, humid, swept by sandstorms, and clouded in haze, isolated the comparatively well-watered and populous highlands. The weakened Yemeni regimes that followed the trading kingdoms were unable to prevent the occupation of Yemen by the Christian Abyssinian kingdom (modern Ethiopia) in the 4th and early 6th centuries ad and by the Sassanids of Persia in the later 6th century, just before the rise of Islam. deeper links
