http://www.who.int/vaccines/news/polionews/yemen.htm
Mass immunization campaigns intended to provide two doses of oral polio vaccine to all children under five years of age are fundamental to the strategy for interrupting the transmission of poliovirus. Efforts to hold national immunization days can be hampered by conflict, poor infrastructure and geographical position. In spite of these challenges, 1998 saw NIDs or sub-national immunization days (SNIDs) reaching over 450 million children in 97 countries. These images were taken during the recent fourth Yemen National Immunization Days for polio eradication, conducted in two rounds in October and November 1999. NIDs in Yemen are the largest single public health activity in the year, involving thousands of health workers and volunteers
as well as many sectors and groups in society. As documented in the image series, Yemen's geography and infrastructure present serious challenges to the programme in trying to reach children in all parts of the country. Despite these difficulties, the number of children immunized every year during NIDs continues to increase, indicating that the quality of NIDs in reaching previously unvaccinated children is better than ever.

    In 1962 an army coup led to the proclamation of a republic. Civil war followed, with Egypt supporting the republicans and Saudi Arabia and Jordan backing the royalists; it ended in 1970 with a republic in place. The southern portion bordering on the Gulf of Aden was penetrated in the 19th cent. by the British, who conquered Aden in 1839 and between 1886 and 1914 signed a number of protectorate treaties with local rulers. Aden was made a crown colony in 1935, and the area to its east became the Aden Protectorate in 1937. In the 1960s, nationalist groups demanding independence began a terrorist campaign against the British, and independence was granted to Southern Yemen in 1967. The National Liberation Front gained control of the government and established a Marxist regime in 1971. Unity agreements between the two Yemens in 1971 and 1981 were not implemented because of recurrent warfare, but a merger negotiated in 1989 resulted in formal unification in 1990. Pres. Ali Abdullah Saleh of Northern Yemen became president. By 1993, however, relations between the north and south had grown tense, and fighting between army units in 1994 erupted into a nine-week civil war in which northern forces were victorious. Yemen clashed with Eritrea over control of the Hanish Islands in the Red Sea in 1995; the Hague Tribunal awarded the islands to Yemen in 1998.

    A country of southwest Asia at the southern tip of the Arabian peninsula. It was ruled by various peoples, such as the Sabaeans, Himyarites, Romans, Ethiopians, and Persians, in ancient times. It was conquered in the 7th century A.D. by Muslim Arabs and became part of the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century. The northern part (known as Yemen or North Yemen) was established as an independent kingdom in 1918 and made a republic in 1962. The southern part consisted of several British protectorates in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Britain withdrew from the area in 1967, and Southern Yemen became independent soon after. The two united in May 1990. San‘a is the capital and the largest city. Population: 20,000,000 . Yem en·ite or Yem e·ni -ə-nē var tcdacmd="cc=edu;dt";

    Introduction [Top of Page] Background: North Yemen became independent of the Ottoman Empire in 1918. The British, who had set up a protectorate area around the southern port of Aden in the 19th century, withdrew in 1967 from what became South Yemen. Three years later, the southern government adopted a Marxist orientation. The massive exodus of hundreds of thousands of Yemenis from the south to the north contributed to two decades of hostility between the states. The two countries were formally unified as the Republic of Yemen in 1990. A southern secessionist movement in 1994 was quickly subdued.
