"Yemen. The Land of the Queen of Sheba" The exhibition is dedicated to the culture of Yemen and covers the period from prehistoric times to the 6th century AD. For a period of approximately 10,000 years, the land of Yemen united the cultures that developed in the ancient Near East. It was there that hunting was gradually replaced by stock-raising and agriculture, so that prehistoric man was settled, and the first irrigation systems were created, thus allowing for the foundation of settlements, now revealed by the extensive cemeteries, a source of information for an era that still remains in the dark. In the 2nd millennium BC, ancient Yemen, under the influence of the rest of Near East, underwent serious cultural and demographic changes. New populations settled in this part of Arabia, who founded the civilization of Western Arabia.
The Hellenic Ministry of Culture participates with an exhibit of the Archaeological Museum of Delos, which bears a bilingual inscription in the Greek and Arabic language.

Yet Yemen remains a medieval land and modernist fantasy to be discovered. This fascinating country stretching from the shores of the Red Sea to beyond the shores of the Arabian Sea is extraordinarily rich in historical sites. These ancient sites are refreshingly free of commercial ventures with an atmosphere of uncluttered authenticity no longer present at better-trodden historical locations. A trip to Yemen is considered an experience of a way of life long since lost to the modern world, a dream destination of unusual record, a very rich mixture of archaeological, cultural, traditional arts, natural and historical heritage, a picture of a different age:

In the Peabody Museum, Steven Caton, professor of contemporary Arab studies, holds a basket from the Middle East while admiring a ladle from Liberia. Caton, originally from Germany, moved to the United States at 10 and researched his dissertation in Yemen. "[Anthropologists] talk about not feeling at home in their own culture, and that's why they go outside to another culture." Photo by Kris Snibbe. Lawrence of Arabia for the first time. "It had a tremendous impact on my imagination," Caton says of this 1962 epic tracing the life of T.E. Lawrence, the British officer, adventurer, and archaeologist who unified Arab tribes to fight the Turks during World War II. In particular, he recalls a scene where Bedouin raiders, led by Lawrence, thunder through a canyon in Jordan on their way to lay siege to the port city of Aqabah. "On top of these cliffs, women in black are ululating [uttering loud, shrill cries],"

    Description
Awards About the Author Related Books "Readers have cause to be grateful to Caton for his precise documentation of literary activity in a relatively inaccessible part of the world."Pierre Cachia, Times Literary Supplement "[Caton's] linguistic and poetic analyses are thorough and pointed, without belaboring the fluid prose of his ethnography. . . . Caton goes a long way to demonstrate that oral literature is not merely reflective, but is constitutive of ideology and worldview. . . . [He] has done a superb job of persuading us of the power of poetry in social creation."Deborah A. Kapchan, Middle East and South Asia Folklore Bulletin "Caton's study joins a brilliant ethnography of tribal poetic tradition with a discussion of central issues in anthropological thought."Dale F. Eickelman, Dartmouth College DESCRIPTION (back to top) In this first full-scale ethnographic study of Yemeni tribal poetry, Steven Caton reveals an astonishingly rich folkloric system where poetry is both a creation of art and a political and social act. Almost always spoken or chanted, Yemeni tribal poetry is cast in an idiom considered colloquial and "ungrammatical," yet admired for its wit and spontaneity. In Yemeni society, the poet has power over people. By eloquence the poet can stir or, if his poetic talents are truly outstanding, motivate an audience to do his bidding. Yemeni tribesmen think, in fact, that poetry's transformative effect is too essential
