Sana'a - C ulture S ana'a , city and political capital of Yemen , located in Sana'a Province, on a plateau northeast of the port of Al Hudaydah . Sana'a is the commercial center of a fruit-growing region. It is divided into two sections with the junction formed by the palace of the former imams, or rulers, of Yemen. The eastern section, known as the old city, has several mosques and a market where jewellery, silver and leather goods, silks, and carpets are made and sold. Of Sana'as total population of 250,000, it is estimated that approximately 50,000 people live in the old city today, with about 42,000 of these living within the old walls themselves. Many of these inhabitants are old families. But there is a steady influx of people from country districts, replacing Sananis who have chosen to move to more modern-style housing outside the city walls. In Sana'a you would be standing on an elevation of about 7000 ft above sea level. Surrounded by mountains of basalt, and situated in a relatively flat plain, Sana'a remained one of the major cities in Yemen throughout history. Tourists arriving in Sana'a aren't interested in seeing the development, and the change that has taken place in Sana'a much as they're interested in focusing their attention on the historic and ancient city of Sana'a.
  • The Old City: This contains houses which are more than 400 years old, built of dark basalt stone and decorated with intricate frieze work. The old city wall is extremely well preserved.

Yemen Coast - C ulture Religious holidays are tied to the Islamic Hijra calendar, so dates vary from year to year. Eid al-Fitr (the end of Ramadan), Eid al-Adha (Pilgrimage), Lailat al-Mi'raj (the Ascension of the Prophet), the Prophet's Birthday and the Islamic New Year are the main celebrations. Secular holidays include the Day of National Unity (22 May), Revolution Day (26 September), National Day (14 October) and Independence Day (30 November). Yemen has some fabulous areas for trekking, but keep in mind that you're on your own - there's no organised trekking in the country, and that means no marked trails and no maps. Because the country is sparsely populated, you'll need to be self-sufficient. The Haraz Mountains or al-Mahwit is both good areas because they're densely populated and the people are friendly. East of San'a camping is not welcome at all. Although Yemenis don't really get into water sports, the expect population has found some pretty good diving spots. The Yemeni seas are rich in sea life, and popular with people who either want to gawk or eat. You won't be able to rent equipment, so bring your own. The central market, Souq al-Milh, is a collection of around 40 small souqs, each specialising in one product - you'll find vegetables, spices, qat, raisins, pottery, clothes, woodwork, copper and silver. In the Jambiya Souq you can watch craftsmen making complex ceremonial weapons. If you're a Muslim, you should visit Al-Jami' al-Kabir, the great mosque on the western side of Souq al-Milh. The mosque, which is closed to non-Muslims, was built around 630AD, when Mohammed was still alive.

About your guide:

Nicholas Fitzraymond Parker, also known as Ali Abd al-Malik, is an Englishman who has resided and travelled in the Middle East for more than two decades, embraced Islam and who truly straddles both cultures - living in local Arab society (speaking only Arabic) and being equally at home in the Royal Courts as travelling and fighting with tribesmen, while, in England, being an armiger, Freeman of the City of London (and liveryman), underwriting member of Lloyd's and former chairman of the Royal Society of St. George.
The largest single portion of his time in the Middle East has been in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, but he is familiar with most countries in Arabia, as well as the northern Arab World and the Islamic World in general. Whilst his main work in policy and diplomacy has gained him access to Royal Courts, his voluntary work chairing conferences and lectures for the Muslim World League has made him a public figure in Arabia, where his private life has generated expertise in the fields of Arabian bureaucracy, law, banking, and general commerce. He now operates from London as an independent consultant, advising British, Commonwealth and European companies how best to prosper in the Middle East. The service comprises advice on everything from translating business cards to arranging Royal Audiences. It can be accessed at the website www.middleeastadvice.com.

The Jews of Yemen: History, Culture, Society Credits: 6 advanced credits in Modern History of the Jewish People or in Middle Eastern Studies Prerequisites : 36 credits, including Jews in an Era of Transition or Introduction to the Modern History of the Middle East . Students must also fulfill all English requirements. Authors : Dr. Bat-Zion Klorman-Eraqi , Prof. Yosef Tobi , Dr. Yaron Tsur , Ran Segev Jews lived in Yemen at least from the 2nd century until the mid-20th century, when most emigrated to Israel. The course focuses on major aspects of Yemeni society, both Jewish and Muslim, especially during the 19th and 20th centuries. It examines the political, economic and cultural aspects of life of the Jewish community within a society that was not directly influenced by western colonialism. From this point of view, the Jewish community in Yemen differed from Jewish communities in other Muslim countries. The course deals with the unique culture of Yemeni Jews which preserved ancient Jewish cultural values, embraced various characteristics of the Muslim environment, and was consistent with leading trends in Jewish thought and literature which reached them from other Jewish centers. The wave of emigration to Palestine, which began at the end of the 19th century and reached its peak after the establishment of the State of Israel, is examined against the background of worldwide political changes of the period and Yemen’s changing economic and social reality. In 1962 an army coup led to the proclamation of a republic. Civil war followed, with Egypt supporting the republicans and Saudi Arabia and Jordan backing the royalists; it ended in 1970 with a republic in place. The southern portion bordering on the Gulf of Aden was penetrated in the 19th cent. by the British, who conquered Aden in 1839 and between 1886 and 1914 signed a number of protectorate treaties with local rulers. Aden was made a crown colony in 1935, and the area to its east became the Aden Protectorate in 1937. In the 1960s, nationalist groups demanding independence began a terrorist campaign against the British, and independence was granted to Southern Yemen in 1967. The National Liberation Front gained control of the government and established a Marxist regime in 1971. Unity agreements between the two Yemens in 1971 and 1981 were not implemented because of recurrent warfare, but a merger negotiated in 1989 resulted in formal unification in 1990. Pres. Ali Abdullah Saleh of Northern Yemen became president. By 1993, however, relations between the north and south had grown tense, and fighting between army units in 1994 erupted into a nine-week civil war in which northern forces were victorious. Yemen clashed with Eritrea over control of the Hanish Islands in the Red Sea in 1995; the Hague Tribunal awarded the islands to Yemen in 1998.
