WWW9 Devday: Publishing Tools Track
Organizer: Dale Dougherty, O'Reilly Network
9:00-10:30: Perspectives
The Once and Future Web Publishing Platform Dale Dougherty, O'Reilly
The Web publishing platform has changed significantly since its inception. However, it is still nowhere near where it needs to be. In this talk, I'll review important trends, standards and technologies that are shaping the Web as a publishing platform. I'll compare the Web publishing platform of GNN (circa 1993) with that of O'Reilly Network (2000).
Open Source Tools for XML-Based Web Publishing Edd Dumbill, XML.COM
Open source platforms are among the best-of-breed for creating dynamic publishing experiences. XML is becoming the best-of-breed way to create and exchange content. Bringing the two together, this session will explore XML-based web publishing with PHP, Zope, and tools from the Apache Project.
10:30-11:00: Break
11:00-12:30: Content Development Techniques
Content Negotiation Techniques Koen Holtman, CERN
Content negotiation is the process by which the 'best' version of a web page is automatically chosen and displayed when the user follows the link to the page. I will discuss the current state of web content negotiation standards, together with currently applicable negotiation techniques, inside and outside the standards. The focus is on techniques for site designers who want to support 'standard' browsers. Techniques for browser designers, by which they they can better support site designers who want to put up negotiated content, are also discussed. I will review the necessary measures which must be taken to make negotiation work correctly if there are web caches between the browser and the server. I will also review recent developments like the creation of a feature tag registry by the IETF, and the implementation of the transparent content negotiation standard in the Apache server.

Chapter 15
Advanced Internet Topics
"Surfing on the Shoulders of Giants"
This chapter concludes our look at Python Internet programming by exploring a handful of Internet-related topics and packages. We've covered many Internet topics in the previous five chapterssocket basics, client and server-side scripting tools, and programming full-blown web sites with Python. Yet we still haven't seen many of Python's standard built-in Internet modules in action. Moreover, there is a rich collection of third-party extensions for scripting the Web with Python that we have not touched on at all. In this chapter, we explore a grab-bag of additional Internet-related tools and third-party extensions of interest to Python Internet developers. Along the way, we meet larger Internet packages, such as HTMLgen, JPython, Zope, PSP, Active Scripting, and Grail. We'll also study standard Python tools useful to Internet programmers, including Python's restricted execution mode, XML support, COM interfaces, and techniques for implementing proprietary servers. In addition to their practical uses, these systems demonstrate just how much can be achieved by wedding a powerful object-oriented scripting language such as Python to the Web. after the first edition of this book was written, and the next five years promise to be just as prolific. As always, the standard moving-target caveat applies: read the Python library manual's Internet section for details we've skipped, and stay in touch with the Python community at

A Content Management and Web Publishing Systems Gazetteer
By Philip Hunter - October 2001 Philip Hunter follows on from a recent Ariadne article with a detailed list of the different Content Management Systems currently available. In the last edition of Ariadne ], I wrote about the importance of Content Management Systems for the future of Universities. As a follow-up, I've prepared a selective list covering many of the different systems available. The overwhelming majority of these systems have been developed commercially, and are aimed at corporate users. The list opens with some general and introductory resources, and concludes with a pointer to another list of systems and links prepared by Paul Browning and Mike Lowndes, which was drawn to my attention shortly after this gazetteer was put together. Some CMS related tools are also in the list. System capabilities are as reported in company publicity materials. Content management systems, as with any other significant software committment, should be evaluated carefully before acquisition.

Cocoon is an open-source development framework for creating dynamic websites with XML and Java. Its popularity is rapidly expanding as companies look for ways to manage content in XML. It allows developers to deliver XML data in a variety of formats, including HTML and PDF, and on a wide variety of devices. This book is aimed at both web designers familiar with Java servlets and XML, as well as Java developers who need to create complex documents from XML data. It extends and enhances the standard Cocoon documentation by providing the background on Cocoon's architecture necessary for understanding how to use it. It also offers extensive coverage of the XSP language used with Cocoon and real-world implementation examples, including developing a web service with SOAP and sending text to web-enabled cellphones. Lead author Bill Brogden has written a number of books on Java, including Sybex's best-selling SOAP Programming with Java.

But beyond this, my son, be warned: the writing of many books is endless, and excessive devotion to books is wearying to the body. Ecclesiastes 12:12
(Thanks to Tim Bray for the biblical scholarship) Ed Mosher, Ray Lorie, and I invented the first modern markup language in 1969, IBM's "Generalized Markup Language" (GML). It led to SGML, HTML, XML, and countless applications and variations on the theme. But strangely, considering that markup is for documents, for the first two decades in which the markup language concept was gaining its now universal acceptance, hardly any books were published on the subject. Well, the last five years have more than made up for the first two decades! In fact, despite the past two years having the worst sales ever for computer books, the number of XML titles tripled (although there has been a 5% decline in the past six months). This list includes all the books I know of with substantial content devoted to XML and its closely-related standards and technologies. It is shorter than the lists you get from bookstore search engines because it excludes editions earlier than the current one and books that are out of print or unavailable from Web vendors. (There are a few out-of-print books that are still relevant and are readily available.) I've annotated the list in varying detail, depending on how well I know the book and its authors.
