The Honorable Rudy de Leon, Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness, today announced the selection of Diana Ohman as DoDEA Deputy Director for Europe. The selection was made through a competitive process that enlisted the participation of representatives from all interested groups: the military, parents, teachers, and senior DoDEA staff. As Wyoming State Superintendent of Public Instruction from 1991 to 1994, Ohman was responsible for the oversight of 49 school districts dispersed over a wide geographical area including 7,000 teachers and 500 administrators. The schools served approximately 100,000 students. In that capacity, she developed standards for school accreditation and teacher certification and created the Wyoming Professional Teaching Standards Board. She has been recognized for her experience and expertise in the education of high mobility student populations, standards based instruction, her advocacy for students with disabilities, and her development of technology systems to assist in the management of geographically dispersed schools and school districts. The success she has achieved in all her previous positions is widely attributed to her exemplary management skills and talent as a coalition builder and communicator. The date Ohman will assume the position of DoDEA Deputy Director for Europe, with responsibility for the oversight of all eight Department of Defense Dependents Schools (DoDDS) districts in Europe has not yet been set.

Panel endorses teacher bills By JOAN BARRON Star-Tribune capital bureau Wyoming lawmakers will get a look at a bold, new teacher-advancement pilot program that was part of a teacher excellence package approved by a legislative committee Friday. The pilot program, developed by the Milken Family Foundation, would be available to school districts whose staff members support using it. Teachers under this system undergo four to eight evaluations each year by a team of teachers. The teachers meet for 90 minutes each week to find out in which areas students are doing poorly. If students are lagging in long division, for example, a master teacher monitors the class to spot the teacher's weaknesses. The goal of the program is to help ease the teacher shortage in mathematics, science and special education, in particular.

In addition to its usual business, the CTA Board of Directors "reaffirmed the use of the term ‘extremist' and not ‘Christian,' ‘far right,' or ‘right wing' in referring to the attacks on public education." There were no additional state delegate assembly votes on merger last week, but the news was still bad for pro-merger forces. The board of directors of the Alabama Education Association (which held its convention in December, before the Principles of Unity had been drafted) voted unanimously to oppose the merger. NEA's Alabama affiliate is the ninth largest in the nation. AEA Executive Director Paul Hubbert estimated a loss in membership of 10,000 should merger pass. Hubbert said that AFL-CIO affiliation "creates many philosophical obstacles" for Alabama teachers.
