The universe data are primarily from the NCES Common Core of Data ( CCD ). Additional sources of universe and sample survey data are listed at the end of this article.
Introduction Examinations of the status and quality of education in the United States are often based on comparisons among states. Comparisons of this type are most useful, valid, and constructive when states are examined alongside other states with similar characteristics. It is also helpful to have a variety of factors that are important to public education conveniently arrayed for individual states. State Profiles of Public Elementary and Secondary Education is the third in a series of publications reporting summary data on the general characteristics, fiscal revenues and expenditures, education agency and school numbers and sizes, and students and staff for each state, the District of Columbia, Department of Defense Dependents Schools (Overseas), and the five outlying areas-American Samoa, Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.

February 1945: Junior College Act passes The Junior College Act, after an early defeat in the 1945 Wyoming legislative session, was revised in the same session and made into law. Its passage allowed Wyoming school districts, with voter approval, to establish two-year adult education programs and the authority to levy up to two mills for operational support. In March 1946, Powell residents provided petition signatures to convince School District No. 1 to place the junior college issue before the electorate on June 17, 1946. This vote was preempted in April when the University of Wyoming announced its plans to establish a two-year, fully-accredited branch of the university the following fall in Powell. September 1946: University of Wyoming Northwest Center opens The UW Northwest Center, the first satellite branch of the University of Wyoming, opened Sept. 10, 1946, in the Powell High School building. Classes began Sept. 16. Clarence Moore was the center director and Paul Fawley, Powell's superintendent of schools, was named assistant director. The university funded the teaching staff, library and administrative costs while the school district provided the building and paid for janitorial and secretarial services and necessary equipment and supplies. Classes were taught by seven teachers, including the center director, in second-floor classrooms at the high school. Accounts of student enrollment vary from 58-90, with the Powell Tribune reporting a final fall enrollment count of 75.

We offer an MS degree program as well as certificate programs, which serve military personnel with a dedicated range of Web-based resources and communication facilities. The campus is located in Skokie, IL, a beautiful north suburb of the great city of Chicago. The downtown Chicago Loop area is only 14 miles from the school. We are also very near to the Evanston campus of Northwestern University. KSI offers online courses for students living out-of-state and for local students unable to attend on-site classes. This option is open to students of the Master's degree program and the certificate programs. Our online learning courses have the same standards, contents, and requirements as onsite courses but require more self-discipline. This option is best suited to well-motivated and independent students. For international students attending KSI from out-of-the-country, KSI offers referrals to nearby "student-shared" apartments. These apartments are located very near to the school campus. Rooms in these student-shared apartments can be reserved through the KSI administrative office. In 2003 only six cities had a sizable population: Cheyenne Casper Laramie Rock Springs (18,400), Gillette (21,840), and Sheridan (16,016). Cheyenne, the state capital, is a commercial, industrial, and transportation center and a gateway to the Rocky Mountains. It is the site of the Francis E. Warren Air Force Base, an important United States defense arsenal. Casper is located in the heart of Wyoming’s oil fields. With its refineries and oil-field equipment industry, it is the state’s chief manufacturing and wholesale trade center. Laramie is the home of the University of Wyoming and several museums, including the Ivinson Mansion, and a park that features the recently restored Territorial Prison as well as displays dedicated to the lives of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, of the late 1800s. Rock Springs, Gillette, and Sheridan are smaller trade centers for mining, agriculture, and associated enterprises.

Settlement Of Price-Fixing Lawsuit Provides 665,000 CDs Valued At $9 Million April 25, 2005
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(SACRAMENTO) – Attorney General Bill Lockyer announced more than 1,200 California library districts, school districts, colleges and universities today will start receiving 665,000 free compact discs (CD) valued at $9 million from the settlement of a price-fixing lawsuit that also provided consumers $67.4 million in refunds.
"Music adds great value to our lives, and these free CDs will substantially benefit our children, students and communities," said Lockyer. "This is a fitting end to a case brought to hold accountable music distributors and retailers who conspired to stifle competition and inflate prices for consumers."
The CDs encompass a wide variety of genres, including pop, hip-hop, rock, jazz, blues, country, Latin, classical, children's songs and show tunes. Under the allocation formula, 171 library districts will receive 55 percent of the CDs, 960 K-12 school districts will receive 40 percent, and 93 college districts and universities will receive five percent.
Each K-12 school site will receive an average of 29 CDs, while libraries will obtain roughly 65 percent of the pop titles. Libraries are receiving the most CDs and pop titles because they serve the largest general public population.
