Language Arts
Fourth grade curriculum at Wyoming Elementary School centers around an integrated language arts program. All of our reading and writing skills, as well as the spelling, are taken directly from the literature we are reading. Students experience a wide variety of genres, which include both fiction and nonfiction. Partner reading during Language Arts. Math The central objective of our math program is to support students' learning about numbers, number relationships, the base-ten system, and number operations through the key content areas of mathematics, work with numbers, work with data, and work with geometry (space). Students work together to create an array to solve a multiplication problem.

- well-understood Collection Mapping What is collection mapping? Collection mapping is the process of examining the quantity and quality of your collection and identifying its strengths and weaknesses. A number of authors have written abut the process. The outcome of the process can serve as a guide during the collection development process. A collection map is a visual supplement to the automated catalog system that graphically displays the breath and depth of the collection. In other words, a collection map provides a quick picture of the collection. There are three basic assumptions about collections that relate to collection mapping.
  • The collection should have breadth. There should be something for everyone. It should have depth based on the needs of your students and teachers. The collection should be well understood in order to be effectively developed and used.
  • Collection maps are used for many collection-related projects. These include:
    • showing strengths and weaknesses in the collection evaluating whether the strengths of the collection match the curriculum focus tailoring purchasing decisions planning for future directions suggesting areas of weeding demonstrating areas of need and areas of excellence developing short and long term goals building a budget plan to match curriculum goals creating selection procedures that material collection goals

A K-6, targeted assistance Title I school with fewer than 400 students, Afton is known within the state for taking risks and piloting new programs. And for getting amazing results. During the 1993-1994 school year, Afton was part of a districtwide audit conducted by Idaho State University. The audit showed that students were doing well in math, but lagging behind in reading. As a result, raising the reading performance of all students became the main school reform goal at Afton. The solutions came from research. According to Principal Alan Allred, "We don't do anything that isn't research-based." Beginning with the question, "What can we do differently to help our students?" Allred and his staff studied a variety of interventions over a two-year period, and came up with several different, but connected, strategies.

      Summary of the program
The Improving Literacy Through School Libraries program is designed to improve student literacy skills and academic achievement by providing schools with up-to-date library materials and to ensure that school library media centers are staffed by well-trained and professionally certified school media specialists. The program is administered by the Department of Education and is the first program specifically aimed at upgrading school libraries since the original school library resources program was established in 1965. Numerous studies* show there is a clear link between the quality of library media programs in schools staffed by an experienced school library media specialist and student academic achievement. School library media centers can contribute to improved student achievement by providing up-to-date instructional materials aligned to the curriculum and instructional practices, collaborating with and supporting teachers, administrators, and parents, and extending their hours of operation beyond the school day.

Mary Jo Lynch, Director, Office for Research and Statistics, American Library Association.
Who are you? Where do you, your program, your library media center, and your state's programs and facilities fit within the national picture? You have the answers to some of those questions, of course, but you need national data to determine your place in the overall school library media tableau. In this column, ALA's lead researcher first summarizes the national data that sketch the most recent portrayal of our field and then sets the scene for an even more detailed portrait to come.
The final report of the 1985-86 project was an impressive compendium of data prepared for what was then the Center for Education Statistics in the Department of Education.(1) The body of the report includes approximately 117 tables in three groups. Thirty-nine tables describe public school library media centers along a number of dimensions: staff, collection, expenditures, services, usage, technology, and facilities. Thirty-nine other tables provide the same information for private schools. Thirty-nine additional tables show estimates by state for public schools on the same variables. The report also includes a lengthy introduction with fifteen figures and twenty-two tables, some of them comparing 1985-86 data with data from surveys in 1958, 1962, 1974, and 1978-79.
