MEET THE INTERIM WYOMING LIBRARY DEAN
Richard S. Machalek has been serving as Interim Dean of Libraries at the University of Wyoming since July 1, 2001. The appointment is for one year, upon which time a permanent Dean will have been selected and Machalek will return to his permanent assignment as Professor of Sociology, Adjunct Professor of Religious Studies and Adjunct Professor of Criminal Justice.
Machalek brings impressive academic credentials to his new job. He is a Sociologist with expertise in the sociology of religion, the evolution of social behavior between both human and nonhuman species and general sociological behavior. He has served as Chair of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas and later as head of the Department of Sociology at UW. He is a recipient of the Ellbogen Award for Outstanding Classroom Teaching, has been a featured speaker in the UW President's Speakers Series and has earned the Meritorious Award for Teaching in the College of Arts and Sciences.
Married to Donna Barnes, Associate Professor of Sociology at UW, and parent to two boys, Machalek describes the family as "enthusiastic consumers of the wonderful outdoor amenities provided by Wyoming and the Rocky Mountains." He says he is "profoundly grateful for liberation from 40+ years of heat in Texas and the deep south, although I re

Strategic Plan Update
The Executive Committee of Member Council - Gary Pitkin (UNC), Nancy Allen (DU) and Camila Alire (Auraria) - are reviewing and updating the Alliance Strategic Plan. The committee held a preliminary meeting at which the existing Strategic Plan was examined. It was determined that the current plan is dated and places too much emphasis on the automated library system. The committee felt that the Alliance has reached the end of an era with the sale of CARL Corporation. It is time for the Alliance to move on and reestablish itself as a leader in the resource sharing arena. The primary goal of the new Strategic Plan will be to establish the Alliance as a national leadership organization by augmenting and enhancing initiatives taken by members through the innovative use of systems and technology. Eight areas of concentration have been defined:
  • Digital Library New models for resource sharing Cooperative storage Information Literacy Collective development collaboration Collaborative preservation Collaboration on access policies Distance independent learning

    Winner of the 2005 Outstanding Support Staff Award The winner of the Library Mosaics ' and the Council on Library/Media Technicians ' 2005 award for Outstanding Support Staff award is Diane M. Fay, retired supervisor, cataloging department at the Boston Public Library, Boston, Massachusetts. Ms. Fay has been significantly active locally and nationally in organizing and promoting library support staff. 2005 Library Journal Paraprofessional Award Announced Trish Palluck, resource sharing specialist at the Wyoming State Library, has been selected as Library Journal's Paraprofessional of the Year 2005! Ms. Palluck founded the Wyoming Library Association Paraprofessional/Staff Support Section, the largest group in the Wyoming Library Association. Read more about the award and its recipient in the March 1st, 2005 issue of Library Journal SDLA Library Support Staff of the Year Award Unfortunately, no Library Support Staff of the Year Award was presented at the annual SDLA conference in Spearfish, SD for 2004. Nominations must be received by the awards committee in order to be considered for this prestigious award. Please consider your colleagues and friends in the library community for the 2005 Library Support Staff of the Year Award.
