About Me - Mr. Neil B. Hokanson!
I am Neil Hokanson, a social studies teacher at Star Valley Middle School in Afton, Wyoming.
I was born in Afton, Wyoming in 1965, and my home town is Thayne, Wyoming. I was raised on a ranch that was homesteaded by my Great-Grandfather Hokanson in the late 1800s. The ranch is still in the family today.
I attended Kindergarten at Metcalf Elementary in Etna, Wyoming; grades 1 - 6 at Holdaway Elementary in Thayne, Wyoming; grades 7 - 8 at Star Valley Junior High in Afton, Wyoming; and grades 9 - 12 at Star Valley High School in Afton, Wyoming. While at Star Valley High School I was involved in FFA and served as the Student Body President my senior year. I am a life member of the FFA Alumni Association.
After high school I attended the University of Wyoming and served a mission for my church in the Colorado Denver Mission. After meeting my wife at UW in Laramie, I moved to South Dakota and finished my Bachelor of Science in Education degree in 1993 at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion. I served as a Senator representing the College of Education in the USD Student Association my senior year.
I spent one year substitute teaching in the Lincoln County School District #2 after graduating from USD; then, I taught Humanities, World History, World Geography, and American History at

CHAPTER 11
THE GREAT PLAINS AND PRAIRIES
T he historian Walter Prescott Webb, in his book The Great Plains , suggested that the northwest Europeans who settled much of the United States faced three great "environmental encounters"areas where climatic conditions were so unlike those of their home region that the agricultural crops and settlement patterns developed in Europe were inappropriate. The first of these encounters was with the high summer temperatures and humidity levels of the Southeast. The second was the arid Southwest and interior West. The third was the great continuous grasslands located astride the center of the country ( Map 10 Among the problems on the grasslands, average annual precipitation was much less than in the East, although violent storms accompanied by high winds, hail, and tornadoes were common. Blizzards with wintry blasts intensifying the cold drove the snow into immense drifts. The hot, dry winds of summer parched the soil and sometimes carried it away in great billowing clouds of dust. The region's sparse natural water supply would not support tree vegetation except along the stream courses. Many of these streams were small and flowed only intermittently. Eastern farmers, accustomed to a plentiful supply of water for crops and animals, as well as ample wood for building, fencing, and heating, had to adapt to quite different conditions in their attempts to settle the Great Plains.

  • Atlas of the Vascular Plants of Wyoming The Atlas of the Vascular Flora of Wyoming is a mapping project based upon the effort to capture specimen label data from the collections of the Rocky Mountain Herbarium (RM). Locality data from approximately 198,000 specimens has been georeferenced to about 9000 localities based upon Public Land Survey System (PLSS) township, range, and section. Using the database in conjunction with ArcView 3.0a (a GIS program by ESRI) and Adobe Acrobat 3.0, maps of species distribution have been produced for all taxa currently in the database.

Subject: geomorphology as a field of study
I have a question for everyone. What do you say to the geologists who claim that there is no longer a need for the study of geomorphology, that it is nothing more than physical geology? Our school is in the process of a semester conversion, and the geomorphology course was a casulty of the process. Geology dropped it, but I was successful in adding it to the geography curriculum. There seems to be no small degree of antipathy toward the subject among the geologists here on campus. So, I wondered how others have handled the question. Thanks, Paul R. Larson Paul R.
