Advertisements The latest statistics put the average teacher's salary at about $46,000; some teachers earn a little more, some a little less (the average The first step to creating an education system full of the best teachers we can find is to pay them in line with their importance to their communities. We pay orthodontists an average of $350,000, and no one would say that their impact on the lives of kids is greater than a teacher's. But it seems difficult for everyone, from parents to politicians, to shake free of a tradition in which teaching was seen as something of a volunteer project for women whose husbands brought home the real money. Today's teachers need to, but very often can't, support a family on their salaries. They find it difficult or impossible to buy homes, to save money, to live comfortably, and, in wealthier areas, to live in or near the towns where they teach. Erik Benner, 32

How to Teach a Teenager With a Learning Disability How to Write a Paragraph
Organizing ideas and cramming them into a correctly written paragraph is a huge obstacle for many students with learning disabilities. Here are some ideas to ease instruction and move your students forward in the writing process. Steps: Read. Read out loud. Read independently. Listen to books on tape. Read a group story and then watch the video. Talk about character feelings, plot, setting and all other aspects of the story. Immerse your students in reading and build writing experiences from the topics and ideas you read about. Teach your student how to write a sentence. A student will not feel confident writing a paragraph, if writing a complete sentence is difficult. Go over the subject, verb and attributes of writing a sentence. Start simple and gradually move to complex sentence writing. Let your student master sentence-writing before expecting paragraph-writing. Teach the writing process. There are four basic steps to writing: thinking of an idea, writing a rough draft, revising and correcting mistakes and publishing the finished piece. Practice each step. Spend one whole week just coming up with and talking about ideas, including any characters or plot lines for fiction, and the logical order of facts for non-fiction. Spend another week just putting ideas on paper. Let your students pick the topic that is of greatest interest to them and spend another week revising and polishing the writing piece.

GSAS GUIDE FOR TEACHING FELLOWS ON WRITING LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION
by Cynthia Verba
WRITING LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION AND ITS RELATIONSHIP TO TEACHING
Writing letters of recommendation is a skill that will be of great importance throughout your teaching career, and perhaps should be viewed as an almost integral part of your teaching experience. Students in your sections or tutorials who have had a positive experience - in terms of what they have learned, or the work they have produced - are likely to come to you for a letter of recommendation. Indeed, an abundance of requests can be taken as an indication that you are a good teacher and have an ability to establish a rapport with your students. In our view, good letter writers deserve considerable recognition for the contribution that they make. (If you have written a large number of letters, you might even consider making a note of that when asked by a potential hiring department about your teaching skills and responsibilities.)
THE CONTENTS OF A LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION
l. In simplest terms, a letter of recommendation is a letter that makes a statement of support for a candidate. If, after doing a careful review of a candidate's strengths and weaknesses, you cannot write a supportive letter, it is important to have a candid discussion with the student.

Jackie McAvoy, Teacher and Materials writer, British Council, Tunisia Students often get muddled when writing a narrative because they concentrate too much on the plot of the story. As a result tenses and syntax suffer. This activity helps students both with a story line and with the tenses. Preparation
Make copies of these questions for each pair / group of students
  • What was Mr Jones's job? What was he going to do? Why? What was the weather like? What did he decide to do after that? What didn't he want to do? Why? What was the surprising end?
  • NB: You can choose which tense you want to focus on depending on the class (for example you could ask What did Mr Jones used to do? or What would he like to do next? What has he done that no-one else knows about? etc.) You can also ask about different vocabulary too instead of the weather e.g. What was he wearing at the time? Procedure
    • Tell students that you had a text for them to read but, unfortunately you left it at home! However, you still have the comprehension questions.

The A3WP, one of 15 projects in the California Writing Project and one of 161 in the National Writing Project, serves the diverse region that extends through the very heart of California, from the large inner city and suburban districts in Sacramento county and the urban and suburban districts in Yolo and upper Solano counties to the upper reaches of San Joaquin county and Colusa and Yuba counties with their urban and rural districts and finally to the rural counties in the Sierra foothills, including El Dorado, Placer, Sutter, Nevada, and Amador. The A3WP is one of two projects nation-wide that serves over 5,000 teachers. Established in 1978, the A3WP follows the National Writing Project's model of "teachers teaching teachers," with all programs and activities based upon the following principles:

With a special focus on integrating writing throughout the curriculum, we will address the teaching of math, science, social studies, art and, of course, language arts. Participants will learn how to improve students’ writing while also using writing to improve students’ learning of content. Time will be given for participants to construct a year-long integrated approach to teaching writing across the curriculum to begin using in the new school year.
