How to teach phonics through writing
Introduction
Some reading approaches focus on teaching phonics explicitly during writing lessons. At the same time, they encourage the use of phonics, as needed by the learner, in reading lessons. The approach outlined in these modules was developed by McCracken and McCracken (1982) . It has been very useful in mother tongue literacy contexts in Papua New Guinea. Benefits Here are the benefits of teaching phonics through writing:
  • It is a very simple method of teaching phonics. Lay teachers can use this method easily. It requires a minimum of materials. It requires only five minutes a day. Writing helps learners concentrate on sound-symbol correspondences.
Overview McCracken and McCracken explain the writing lesson as follows: "We consider phonics a spelling skill used when writing, so we begin phonics by beginning spelling and writing. We teach children Materials Here are the materials needed for teaching phonics through writing:
  • Chalkboard for the teacher, chalk

why teach with writing?
At the University of Minnesota, instructors from across the disciplines are incorporating writing into their courses. Doing so has affirmed the enhancing role that writing activities can play in student learning. It has also allowed faculty and students alike to recognize that language use and text production take place within disciplinary language communities; writing in Law, for instance, looks different, is directed at a different audiences and is produced for a series of different purposes than is writing in Computer Science. What follows is an expanding compendium of practical suggestions and model materials created by faculty and teaching assistants as they have integrated writing into their courses. Some will apply to courses across the boards, while others are specific to disciplines or clusters of disciplines. Feel free to download and adapt material you find on our site. We ask only that you give credit to author(s) and that you identify the Center for Writing as the source. If you've developed assignments or other materials that you feel might be useful to other instructors, we invite you to forward them to us at

"You want the assignment to teach writing so that you don’t have to."
Robin Brown, Associate Professor, Cultural Studies and Comparative Literature Many instructors don't use any writing in large classes because teaching writing in addition to course content will further increase their workloads. These suggestions for using writing in large classes are designed so that writing becomes a help to teaching the course content, rather than a hindrance. The following "riffs on writing" in large classes offer general principles for incorporating writing assignments into large classes:
Rewards : Reward all writing that is done. Any writing assignment you give should be taken up and evaluated. Comments can be minimal, especially if you have made the guidelines for the assignment specific and clear. But unless the writing is made to "count," students probably won't perceive it as worth their effort. Introspection : Give writing assignments that allow students to think about their own learning process in the class. In-class writings and informal, out-of-class assignments can give students a chance to evaluate their own progress and success in the course.

How to teach a child to write
Teaching a child to write a journal shows them about writing and preserves family memories.
I love to write. I love to read what other people write. Journals have been part of my life forever. Of course I wanted my children to write their own journals, even before they could hold a pencil. When they were very young, the children told me or their grandmother their day's story to write into the family journal. As they grew older, they wrote their own. Later, the older children would write out what the younger ones dictated. The binders full of those journals are among my most treasured possessions. They radiate enthusiasm and joy and upset and relief and sorrow and lessons learned. They're full of life as we lived it in years we'll never see again. Teaching your children to write journals is largely a matter of habit. If you write in a journal, and your children see you do it, little ones will want to do the same thing. Encourage this. Don't know what to write? Start with the basics and you'll soon develop your own style. Each person has a different sense of what's important in a day, of what's worth remembering. All my children considered food the number one most important item to record in their early journals. One I remember clearly looks like this:
