The basics of romance writing
Writing coach Jessica Page Morrell uncovers the secrets of the romantic fiction industry... The guidelines for romance writing are absolutely specific, and each publishing house will happily send them to you. There is a formula behind it, but it also leaves lots of room for creativity. It's a voracious market, quite profitable and growing all the time. Also, new sub-genres or categories are being added all the time. Harlequin is one of the publishers that takes unagented novels, and some series are done by book packagers - they come up with a concept and then hire a group of writers to carry out the theme. Let's talk about some of the basic elements of romance. First, of course, it's character. So let's dispel some of the myths about romances - like the heroines are wimps. Modern romance heroines are lively, appealing and in control of their own destiny. The heroine's personality is the foundation for the book. She's not being rescued, can't live without the hero. The old line about writing romances is that the heroine is someone that readers relate to and the hero is someone they can fall in love with. Usually they have their own venue - are often entrepreneurs and professionals. I think making them a flesh-and-blood presence is essential.

Janet Lee Barton My Writing My Family Favorite Places
August 10th, 2005
Welcome to my place! You probably already know that I write Christian Romance. What you may not know is that while I live in Mississippi in a little town about an hour away from either the Gulf Coast or New Orleansdepending on which direction you take I was born and raised in Roswell, NM. (Yes, THAT Roswell.) But, I've also lived in Florida, Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana. I think you can safely call me a Southern Lady.
The Lazy-Hazy days of Summer are here and I'm busy polishing with my next book, a contemporary set down by the coast of Mississippi. It's called Unforgettable and will have a sequel called, To Love Again, so I'll be busy into Winter.
I love being able to write both historicals and contemporaries for Heartsong and while I will miss writing about the townspeople of Roswell, I'm really enthused about this contemporary series!
But the big excitement for us right now, is the growth of our church. We've added on to our exsisting building and have more than doubled the size. I'm teaching the primary class on Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings. My class is the youngest that get to go upstairs and they are loving being up there with the older kids. Our new classrooms are so spacious and nice. Everyone is thrilled.

January 2005:
Getting to Know the Erotic Romance Field
It's no secret that the erotic romance (or romantica) market is one of the hottest markets out there. Both in print on on-line, authors are pushing the envelope, and sometimes even finding new envelopes. Even Harlequin is coming out with an erotic romance line. Is erotic romance right for you? Not necessarily. If you hate the books, you probably won't be able to write them. Before you try your hand at writing erotic romance, ask yourself if this is the right market for you. Have you read the stories? Do you enjoy them? Or do they make you shudder, and not with delight? Not everyone is cut out for this market.

Like all writers I struggled for many years to be taken seriously. Despite my instinctive need to put words to paper, it's often been lonely and difficult.
I've found that writing as a profession, or even as a hobby, is often looked upon with scorn, so not surprisingly, many talented individuals give it up to pursue more lucrative, but perhaps less fulfilling, occupations.
I understand too well how easily a writer can become tired and discouraged. The idea of wallpapering your house with rejection slips is not appealing no matter who you are.
