National Bestselling Author

Please sign my guest book
Romantic Times Reviewers Choice Award Winner, Jill Metcalf,
is the national best selling author of five historical romances and one novella. Her stories have received awards and award nominations from reviewers and readers alike. More than one reviewer inquired about the possibility of cloning the hero of Jill's first romance, Spring Blossom . Hunter Maquire was a Romantic Times Knight in Shining Silver (K.I.S.S.) award winner. Jill's fourth historical romance novel, Family Reunion , brought her a nomination in Affaire de Coeur's, Favorite Top Ten Authors Readers' Choice Poll. Jill hails from the historic town of Georgetown, Ontario, 50 miles west of Toronto where she lives on a pretty but quiet street. The office where she creates her stories is on the second floor at the front of the house. "I swear people must think I'm a captive up there," she laughs. "When I'm having difficulty with a section of a story and need to think, I get up from my desk and stare out the window. I don't gaze at anything in particular, just stare at the street with that glazed look that comes with deep thought. But I'm sure people wonder why I spend so much time there!" Jill's best buddy is McDuff, as seen with her in the picture above. The Duffer, as he is frequently known, is a white miniature schnauzer and was only 14 months old when the photograph was taken in January 1999. "He is such a wonderful, loving little guy," she says. "He has the heart of a champion and the courage of a mastiff. He is only 13 and 1/2 inches tall but he doesn't know that! Duffy has completely changed our lives for the better. And he is amazingly adaptable. I had to stop taking him for his twice-daily walks in the late summer of 1998 due to the failure of an artificial hip joint. When close friends gave me a scooter, Duffy took to the vehicle without hesitation. He skips and hops beside it or, more often, runs in front so that it looks as if he is pulling me along. I don't have to worry if the batteries fail!" she laughs.

Willing Surrender:
the Politics of Writing Romance
Introduction When the manila folder containing my mother's unpublished romance novel arrived in the mail, it came with a few scraps of memorabilia in it: an encouraging note from me "Mom! A definite best-seller. (This will sell! ) I want more ... write! E.W." and two Harlequin romance novel covers I designed, with the appropriate teasing captions, titles, and Harlequin symbols in their upper left corners. Re-reading the captions transported me back eleven years, to a time when, it seemed, I lived and breathed the Harlequin romance. For the novel cover I had titled, Love Me, Cowboy, I contrasted the heroine's professional success (as a singer) with her success in romance, the built-in assumption being that The Relationship was what really mattered. Pamela walked on stage, breathless. 'This song is called, 'Love me, cowboy ...' she began. A cheer broke out in the crowd. Bob Harrison smiled and urged her on. She sung the ballad in a clear, sweet tone, her voice quivering with emotion toward the end, and when she was finished, glistening with sweat and exhausted, she heard the crowd cry for more. She smiled. After all, no one knew her heart was really breaking... Harlequin-flavored rhetoric had crept into my writing almost unconsciously, so that even my most casually written notes betrayed that perky, feisty, plucky heroine's voice. On the romance novel cover titled

Successful romance author defies genre stereotypes
Web-posted Apr 6, 2005
By DERRICK SOBODASH Special to The Daily Oakland Press Vance Briceland has two full-time jobs - and three personalities Advertisement By day, the 41-year-old is in charge of dispersing incoming government funds to offices at Wayne State University. By night, he's the incredibly successful author Naomi Nash when writing romances, or Naomi Neale when writing chick lit. The Royal Oak resident has been writing for the past 15 years, but last year his first book was published, and the wait paid off. In the last year alone, he sold five full-length books and a short novel. He has already had contracts approved for 16 more books - an incredible success for a new author. His contracts are mostly for Dorchester Publishing's young-adult line of books called "Smooch." "I think my talent is just being flexible enough to throw myself into a new world with every book," Briceland says. But he is rare in his choice of genres - a man writing romance novels.

Romance Novels by Brown
About the Collection About the Authors Access to the Collection Resources for the Study of Romance Fiction
The romance novels included in this database, along with the working papers of their authors, were acquired in conjunction with the establishment of the Christine Dunlap Farnham Archives, which is "dedicated to preserving and the continued collection of materials documenting the history of women in Brown University and Pembroke College, the post-graduate lives of Brown University and Pembroke College alumnae, and the lives of Rhode Island women." In 1988 Karen Lamoree, then Archivist of the Farnum Archives, invited Brown alumnae and local romance writers to donate their papers and published works to the Archives. In the Spring of 1989 the Archives and the Pembroke Center for Teaching and Research on Women sponsored a symposium, "Romancing Women: Gender and Popular Culture," which featured sessions on the romance genre. This collection reflects the Library's continuing commitment to the acquisition of primary source materials for the study of American popular culture, a collecting emphasis begun in the 19th century with the Harris Collection of American Poetry and Plays. Among the most significant of these holdings are popular and genre fiction, fantasy and science fiction, detective fiction and true crime stories, theater and theatrical ephemera, performance magic, wit and humor, comic books and graphic novels, and gay and lesbian literature, including an emphasis upon pulp fiction and erotica. A MOST UNEXPECTED MARRIAGE Victoria Fontaine's mischievous nature and brilliant, biting wit have scandalized the ton ...and earned her the nickname "Vixen." But her reputation pales before the infamous Lord Althrope's, known as "Lord Sin." The years Sinclair Grafton spent on the Continent have done nothing to quell the rumors about his past. And when the stunning Vixen and the handsome rogue find themselves momentarily alone at an elegant gala, their passion gets the best of them. Caught by Victoria's father in a shockingly sensual kiss, Sin and Vixen have no recourse except a wedding. At first the very liberal lady relishes the thought of an unfettered marriage to an indifferent, unrepentant scoundrel. And after one unforgettable night of ecstasy, Lady Vixen is determined to unmask the true Sin...to satisfy a passionate heart that craves far more than freedom. Indulge and be delighted! -

I'm hoping to use the strengths of both sites to compliment one another. For instance, I will no longer house the career links on this site. They will now be located on the HRR site. Also, my author links will be shifted over. This site will mainly be focused on my Roswell Fan Fiction [Please note: The writing featured in the Roswell section was written long before I became serious about my writing career. It was also long before I found RWA® or SMRW. What that means is that you'll have to read with an open eye! :-)] and my Reader Bookshelves.

73. Writing The Multicultural Romance
Article by romance author Shirley Hailstock.
http://www.geocities.com/Paris/Bistro/6812/multicul.html
WRITING THE MULTICULTURAL ROMANCE @ 1995 by Shirley Hailstock This article may not the reprinted or distributed without the author's permission.
Multicultural romances developed like movie stars. Writers have been working for years then suddenly they're an overnight sensations. Since everyone is part of a culture, we define the subgenre as a romance in which the main characters embrace one of the minority races in the United States. At this writing these books only have African-American characters as the major players. There are several translations into the Spanish language of some category romances and Indian romances, which had previously been considered historical, are suddenly popping up in the multicultural classification. The elements of a multicultural novel are the same as they are for any well written book; character, plot, setting, sexual tension, pacing, etc. Where the differences begin to verge off is that books written by African-American, Hispanic, or Indian women will bring with them a new perspective to the genre, a new view to a tried and true relationship. First and foremost it's a love story. At the core will be the one man-one woman romance. Around it, nurturing it, helping it to grow will be the culture, foods, clothing, lifestyles of the characters. Just as there are different rules for writing contemporary romance versus historical romance, there are different considerations in writing the ethnic/multicultural contemporary versus the ethnic/multicultural historical. I have separated some of these considerations and for the contemporary have categorized the elements of Background, Traditions, Methods of Speaking, Expression, Description, Occupation and Setting.
