Interview with Romance Time Traveler Barbara Christopher
By Robert L. Hall Since 1990, Barbara Christopher has been writing romances, finishing seven manuscripts for projected books, before she “Got the call” from ImaJinn Books. They wanted to publish her latest work, Keeper of the Key In November of 2001, the novel began to show up on bookshelves. Barbara, who had published newsletter articles and some poems, was now a novelist. Her family and friends had told her prior to this that happiness is doing what you love, not receiving rewards. Nevertheless, after over ten years of writing in the field, she was elated. And why not? She had done her groundwork well, attending writer’s conferences: North to Chicago IL, South to New Orleans, LA, East to Washington, D.C., West to Los Angeles, CA and many places in between. Back in 1990, about the time she started writing, the River City chapter of the Romance Writer’s of America was forming. They had their organizational meeting in April, but Barbara didn’t find out about them until September of that year. She’s been a member ever since, holding the offices of Secretary, Treasurer, President and member at large.

Romance Subgenres
Romance as a genre encompasses so much fiction that it can be broken down further into subgenres, such as Historical Romance, Alternative Reality Romance, and Contemporary Romance. And those subgenres can be broken down also, for example Alternative Reality Romance can be broken down into Fantasy Romance and Time Travel Romance. To keep things as uncomplicated as possible, we are going to look at six popular subgenres and give you some virtual places to visit to learn more about each one.
Historical Romance
Historical Romances are simply love stories with historical settings. Any historical setting is possible, be it medieval, Victorian, or prehistoric. Of course, the most romantic time periods make the best romances. Mary Balogh
The Web site of New York Times bestselling author Mary Balogh includes series information, backlist titles, information on new releases, as well as a newsletter and fan list.

Debora: Please tell us a little bit about yourself.
Debora: What's your writing process like? Do you come up with your characters first or the plot?
Debora: What do you specifically enjoy about writing for Presents? For Silhouette? Do you ever feel like you have multiple personalities in writing for these different romance lines? Do you write outside the romance genre as well?

I enjoy variety and trying different styles, lengths and types. I find each one a challenge. For the same reasons I write outside romance - I have had poetry and many short stories published in collections and anthologies as well as magazines, and have won prizes for non-fiction as well as fiction. Between writing romance I also worked for years on a historical novel that was published by HarperCollins in New Zealand. (Gather the Wind by Daphne de Jong.)

The Romance Reader's Connection SEPTEMBER AUTHOR OF THE MONTH Roxanne Rustand by Jeri Neal Click on cover to purchase book. It’s with great pleasure that I introduce you to author Roxanne Rustand. Roxanne’s newest book, the fourth in her special agent’s series, Operation: Texas, is being published this month and is reviewed at the TRRC website. Additionally, she has a number of new books coming out over the next year. After reading her interview I think you’ll agree that Roxanne is a terrific lady with lots of thoughts about romance writing. Please welcome Roxanne Rustand. Jeri Neal: In Operation: Texas, Celia and Brady are dealing with many of their own past issues as they cope with the threat of drug runners. How do you get your inspiration or "muse" for the issues that influence your character development? Roxanne Rustand: I love exploring complex family relationships, and how they affect a character's ability to interact and connect with others. I also enjoy delving into how a troubled past can influence a character's response to his peers, and his ability to commit on a deep, emotional level to someone who may be his (or her) once-in-a-lifetime love. Opening one's heart to someone else takes courage and faith, but when that courage is rewarded, can there be greater joy? Writing romance is such funit's a chance to experience all the uncertainties and excitement of falling in love all over again!

The Romance Writer
by Barbara Bretton
Picture this scene: you're in the ballroom of a fancy hotel. There's a cocktail party in progress marking the start of the annual American Medical Association convention. Two doctors meet over the low cholesterol cheese dip. "I'm a cardiac surgeon," says the first doctor. "What are you?"
The second doctor smiles and says, "I'm a dermatologist."
"Oh," says the cardiac surgeon, looking vaguely disappointed. "So when are you going to become a real doctor?"
What's that you say? Too far-fetched? No intelligent human being would treat another intelligent human being in such a condescending manner.
Oh really? Guess again. Substitute the words "Romance Writer" for "dermatologist" and tell me if the scenario doesn't sound familiar.
I have a theory that at any given moment of the day a romance writer somewhere in the world is being asked the immortal question, "So when are you going to write a real book?"
We all have our stock answers to that particular question.
